my review: a lot of highs, and song-wise no real lows. I like every song, the only bad side of the album are the skits. Electric Lady is a highly inspired album that sticks with you even after you finish listening to it. I can't say it's better than Archandroid, but it's definitely at least on par with it. I think it benefits, song-wise, from a better sense of balance between the Suite's with Suite IV's bombastic, hyperactive funk and rock fueled leanings. This is contrasted with Suite V's more mellow, almost saturnine, soul influences that hearken back to the days of old time rnb when every song that covers a wide girth of subject matter.

Suite IV is fantastic, but this lp is a fine definition of back ended: suite V is amazing, and could be solidified as best rnb/pop album of 2013 by itself. Combined together, and we have a big candidate for album of the year.

This album did not disappoint or miss its mark at all. Now to take out those two skits.

Yeah you have trade offs. I miss the classical music arrangements from Archandroid's suites, but it makes up for it. Either way, we get two of the best albums of the 10's.

It's one of those tracks that if you don't like it, you need to fix your taste in music straight up. That and Dorothy Dandridge Eyes, The Electric Lady, and We Were Rock and Roll. Maybe Q.U.E.E.N. too, but I can understand if that track comes off as divisive.

Listened to Archandroid today.

Now I can directly compare it to Electric Lady.

Archandroid:

- more bombastic
- more dance-oriented, so you wanna dance almost every song but that's the point given the albums story
- has less variety
- is less consistent going into Suite III
- has the benefit of no skits
- starts better, but it's front loaded

Electric Lady:

- more eclectic in musical styles
- better in the songwriting area
- has better guests
- more consistent, not a single 'okay' song
- has forgettable filler skits
- ends on a much better note, it's very back ended

After my listen, I think Electric Lady is better than Archandroid.

It has only one distinct flaw: skits. Other wise, perfect album.

The skits are growing on me. The one about robot love was hilarious.

However, you need to swap two of the things you listed: The ArchAndroid is FAR more eclectic than The Electric Lady. ArchAndroid goes from Latin bop to MJ four on the floor to James Brown to prog rock to alt-pop to Garfunkel & Oates to ballad to James Bond. There's NOTHING like BaBopByeYa! or 57821 or Say You'll Go on Electric Lady.

Electric Lady is very firmly in a funk-pop-R&B blend. There's not a ton of experimentation.

You're right. I forgot about that, Archandroid is a far more experimental album in terms of sound. I think it goes beyond rnb/funk though. It has hints of 70's rock too.

You should listen to Metropolis, which is Suite I, Zeph.

Whereas Electric Lady has more focus, the tracks blend together nicer, and overall there seem to be fewer ideas/experiments but what's left is a very good record.

There's something about the unfocused element of it that keeps it on par with Electric Lady, though. It lended itself to some absolutely gorgeous experimentation (nothing on Electric Lady matches Say You'll Go/BaBopByeYa!/Cold War/57821).

However, one thing I definitely give Electric Lady in its favor is that the album as a whole is more listenable the whole way through. I could do without at least four or five tracks on ArchAndroid.
