Child of Light
« on: September 10, 2013, 04:52:56 AM »
Xbox 360, Wii U, PS3, PC, Xbox One and PS4

Quote
There are no random encounters in Child of Light; rather, you see every enemy within the environment and, upon touching them, are thrust into battle. Child of Light's battle system is a variant of the Active Time Battle system employed in the Final Fantasy series. At the bottom of the screen, a bar shows how long it will take for enemy actions (and those of your own) to initiate; casting big spells or employing special moves will increase or decrease your attack timing, so planning is paramount.

New info:

The game has multiple party members, and they can be swapped like FFX

Unlike FFX however, you dont need to swap them in to get XP. Everyone gets it regardless.

Reviews are out now - some good, some bad. Most people suggest playing on Hard difficulty, as the game is generally babby's first RPG.

Still buying it, you can watch me play when I stream it if you're interested.

i'm curious about this game because it's a turn based rpg but i honestly don't believe that the software house that farts assassin creed every year can do a good turn based rpg and i have an hard time taking impression from the internet because it looks artsy as fuck and the internet love anything that "SHOW WHAT THE MEDIUM CAN TRULY DO!"

We'll I only got to play for an hour or so. I finished chapter 2 but damn this game is pretty good. The art and music are top notch and eh battle system is great. It's not too active so I don't feel stressed trying to control the flow of battle but it's not too slow so I don't go into autopilot with just pressing A over and over. It's perfectly engaging and is flexible enough to feel like strategizing is actually necessary. Definitely worth 15 bucks

There are a couple games I look up on twitch just to listen to, like Valdis Story, and avoid hearing people talk. It would be simpler to just track down the soundtrack but sometimes all the battle noises add something. Osu is another game where as soon as someone talks I switch streams

Like magus, interested in how this turns out.  Western takes on jrpgs have a pretty iffy track record.  Mainly interested in:

-Battle system depth, quality
-Sub-system character growth systems depth, variability
-Story

Also, as an aside, why do all non-Japanese rpgs have to be "baby first rpg?" even popular wrpgs that are big like Bioware stuff is "hit X and sit back and watch your characters win".  I mean I'm asking this rhetorically because I understand that any game trying to sell to the mass AAA mainstream audience will make it super easy regardless of the genre to appease the most players, but it's still a bit lame.  Like even the indie Zeboyd Games rpgs I tried like Penny Arcade Ep3 and Cthulu are super no-difficulty easy.

I feel like the one one making challenging rpgs are the Japanese and maybe the Pillars of Eternity will be challenging.  I like having to think of strategy to beat scenarios.

it seems like as hard as they tried, this is still a really Ubisoft-y game. Everything you list there isn't gonna be any better/memorable than other games in the genre, especially the story (which appears to be offensively bad as opposed to forgettable/good). The pretty seems to be the only selling point.
