It's just massively in need of an update.  It's not very user friendly.

Steam. Not user friendly? Please indulge.

Am I going to be using a mouse and a keyboard in the living-room?

If you want. But Steam and SteamOS work well with gamepads, too. Stay tuned, though - we have some more to say very soon on the topic of input.

looking forward to announcement three

How about that controller?

I'm terrified by nonvirtual virtual thumpads. No, thank you.

I don't get it... dual analogs suck for control.  We're all just USED TO IT at this point.  The controller is the only legitimately interesting thing so far.  Why is everybody so freaked out by it?

The new controller looks pretty cool to me. I embrace change if it's an improvement, and dual analog sticks could definitely be improved on.

People complaining just because 'it looks different', maybe take another look at it?

If Gabe can bring mouse/kb type accuracy and movement to a controller, that would be great.

I don't agree with this at all. In fact I remember mentioning that I was slightly disappointed that neither PS 4 or Xbox one were really adding anything control wise and the prevailing opinion of the posters at that time was that the current controllers were fine  and it was a good thing that nobody was doing anything "innovative".

Dual analog works for a wide variety of games. There is a reason it has become the standard on consoles. It wasn't just coincidence. Now if there is a better format that can take over and is easy to use, and doesn't involve a lot of hardware then cool.

A very definite advantage is that you're not accelerating and decelerating the cursor as you would with a stick. Well, not unless the game in question treats the pads that way.

yeah, depends what you mean by control.  I know a touchpad is better for aiming, like, this is something I've been convinced of for years and have been waiting for someone to do.  But it's the left stick behavior, the general character movement, that's the hurdle for this thing.  Always thought it'd be analog stick on the left, touchpad on the right.

Every single impression from devs we've seen is positive thus far

:umad

Maybe mad, but I don't see a lie in his opinion. Like him, Gabe and Company need demo days (or send me a demo unit  :-*) to convince me. Developers say a lot of things, but that doesn't make them the "authority" like the mass-consumer base. If the consumer-base doesn't like it and doesn't buy it, well... it's a "flop" no matter how "innovative" some people find it.

Given they've said people can modify the API and controller hardware, it's only a matter of time until someone does that I feel.

I think the biggest thing for me from the controller announcement is Valve going "okay, if you don't like this you can hack it yourself." It's gonna be realllllll interesting to see what hardware and software nerds do in regards to the "OS" and controller to improve them.
