Over much of the country it is a cold and icy winter's night perfect for making a cocktail and regretting everything in your life getting comfortable in a big chair. Tonight's cocktail is the Merry Widow. I've seen a lot of variations on this complex and stout (it is winter after all) cocktail but here's what I settled with:

You'll need:

  • 2 oz. high proof dry gin (for that classic feel)
  • 1.5 oz. Dubonnet (this is key but in a pinch sweet vermouth will do)
  • 1 oz. dry vermouth
  • Dash of Angostura bitters

And of course a jigger, and shaker.

Mix the ingredients like you're manhandling a shakeweight in a shaker with ice. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with an orange twist. Enjoy!

Anyone else drinking anything interesting tonight?

Still mainlining rye and ginger.  It's my go to these days, and makes writing this paper a whole lot easier.

Kaffir The Reaper

That's the coolest name ever.

It has downed many white devils.

I think you can pick up a few different authentic absinthes in the US now

Jäger is definitely not an absinthe, but it is also flavored with anise

From what I understand from the kick I had a few years ago, they didn't for a long time but the law was "re-interpreted" and thujone is now allowed in low concentrations.

There's one or two produced locally here in Portland, I've always wanted to do the whole ritual with the slotted spoons and all. There's a bar around here called Secret Society that does it (and all sorts of old world cocktails) but I always end up intrigued by some other offering of theirs.

Not here. Been a blessedly empty vessel since I woke up for work this morning.

My barrel aged Manhattan is only 16 days old but I had to sneak a taste:

1. Put some bourbon in a barrel
2. Put half as much vermouth in that barrel
3. Make her open that barrel (after aging)

Four Roses Single Barrel bourbon
Rhubarb bitters
Orange peel
Sugar cube
Ice

Blast from the past, but Ive had drinks at Secret Society a few times while waiting for a table at Toro Bravo. Cool space.

Do you use any ice or special ice in your Old Fashioneds?

We have silicone block ice molds, but you're probably fine with regular ice.

Wife and I both prefer the rhubarb bitters over angostura.

We (we meaning my wife) make our own bitters. We should definitely do a rhubarb. Thanks for the idea!

That's exactly why we've gone to Secret Society as well, Gundam :lol Toro is great! Bacon wrapped dates :drool

When I was a cook we had a table that had a particularly long ticket time so I quickly made a couple bacon-wrapped dates to send out as an amuse-bouche in an attempt to impress my boss. The table was Muslim.

Browns suite last night. They had this new shit called Suicide Lemonade which is basically makers mark, lemonade, and hot sauce.

Better than it sounds.
YMMV

I've made Glühwein (mullen wine but literally "glow wine") two nights in a row. So good when it's cold out. I'm definitely feeling that glow.

And speaking of bitters my wife made a chai spice bitters with similar ingredients to what's in the simple syrup in this mulled wine recipe. It's pretty awesome in a Manhattan this time of year.
