I thought the GoG version was based on the European/censored version?

Yes, but very dated at this point.

Early Fallout is dated only I find in terms of ui. Like, it's so hard walking and doing basic shit unlike Infinity Engine games where all you have to do is click.

This was so ridiculous in FO2. The kids were there but you couldn't see them so they could still pick your pockets. And there was that lost kid mission but you couldn't complete it since you couldn't see or interact with the boy.

Anyway, you really should be playing with the unofficial patches which fixes the censorship along with loads of other things. Get them from here for FO1 (you'll need both 1.2 and 1.3 patches), and here for FO2 (only need the patch but the restoration project is worth a try). The hi-res patches for both games are also worth getting.

Any patches that make the controls better?

You'll take the clunky old school UI and you'll damn well like it.

Sweet, never played these so I grabbed em. I had never used GOG before and I got Beneath a Steel Sky for signing up, always wanted to play it!

GoG's pretty cool, old games that run with minimal headache and no DRM.

GOG does do some work to get the games working on modern machines. (Though their success can vary.) And if you like the bonuses (manuals, artwork, soundtracks, etc.) they include lots of them with the games quite often.

Well, you have a 'your collection'  site on the gog page that looks nice if you're into that look and you can add non steam games to the steam library and add a pic there... Cloud saving can be done manually as well. Yep, these are some more or less minor inconveniences but no deal breaker.

GOG does tend to give you other stuff with the games, like soundtracks and artwork. In the case of the Fallout games you also get the Fallout Bible that they've put together. It's massive and has loads of info on the original games.

Well, you can pirate the GoG releases/updated to modern system versions right now. It's just... honor system makes it to where buying their work in getting stuff to "just work" on modern systems without having to fumble through DOSbox/etc. yourself to run it well is worth the $5-10 they charge. :yeshrug

Purchased! I had Fallout 1 from their sale last year (or 2 years ago?), but grabbed FO2 and FOT this time.

Obviously not as good as free, but you can currently get a whole lot of Dungeons & Dragons for not much over at GOG. About 19 hours left on the deal.

Problem with GOG in general is dogshit download speeds.  Trying to download a game manual right now, 14.8kbps speed, wtf

That's pretty wild, I've always gotten decent download speeds. Might be that their servers are getting hammered still from everyone that got these three games for free.
