In terms of hardware and software strategy:

  • Start pushing Wii U content notifications to 3DS. Notifications should go direct to the OS, not just the eShop news section. They should push review-bragging to the feed too. It'll annoy some people, but so what.
  • Release official Miiverse Android and iPhone apps, no screenshotting (obvs), just access to the service, and live messaging / notifications
  • Start doing companion apps, just like Activision, Ubisoft, Warner and others have. Sony have a PSN app and PS Mobile, Microsoft have a Live app. All these guys have been pro-active about it, and they're nowhere near as threatened by the mobile stuff as Nintendo are. They should do more stuff like this: http://www.pokedexios.com/ - These apps can be outsourced. In the case of third party companion apps, they almost always are.
  • Big titles should release on both platforms... theres no reason Link Between Worlds couldn't have been a HD eShop game if they'd developed both versions at the same time. I think a lot of people would have found a Wii U version to be an attractive proposition. As a sequel to one of the greatest games of all time, I think it maybe would have warranted it too.
  • If they do dual releases, if they release VC titles on both platforms, then they should also do cross-play, or significant discounts.
  • Nintendo should buy at least two big games and / or betrayaltons. Maybe even buy a third party dev. Keep an eye on internet buzz re: third party reveals. If a game is going to be huge, they should look to buy their own version or release a competitor. Unlike Nintendo, third parties telegraph their moves and big-games long before they ever release... they really should be doing more to get games or provide alternatives.
  • Following new reveals, research which titles in development are deemed most attractive. Bundle and price cut at the same time when it/they release.
  • Update / improve Nintendo TVii. Actually release it in Europe.
  • Mario Kart Wii U needs to have Wii Fit U style Miiverse communities, worldwide & regional rankings / boards, and a means of proper communication in game / lobbies. Clever new game modes would be welcome. Track design like Mod Nation would be amazing.

Longer term hardware strat

  • Wii U isn't failing because its not an Xbone or PS4, it's failing because its Wii U. Its too expensive. Its not positioned intelligently in terms of hardware power between the generations. Backwards compatibility is an expensive and ineffective shackle weighing down the whole machine.
  • Shit-can BC. The next machine will play only what it can play natively and what it can emulate. It will also be broadly port-friendly with whatever other companies release.
  • Merge portable and home console HW departments (they've already done this recently). Should improve contracts with partners, improve cross-compat OS and game development, and help them create things that compliment one another rather than compete with one another. A singular hybrid Nintendo machine could also come out of this setup, but I doubt it... I don't particularly want that personally.

In terms of PR and marketing:

  • Scott Moffitt's team needs to be held to account. He came in in 2011, and I think its fair to say his department hasn't done a good job ever since. They turned 3DS around, I'll give them that.
  • Nintendo started an advertising review in May and hired a bunch of new agencies including Deutsch LA in September. Where are the results of this change? Leo Burnett are still their lead agency as far as I'm aware, with Golin Harris still helping on PR. They both need a corporate cock slap, or they need giving some actual money so they *can* do something.
  • Fire everybody at Nintendo UK in Windsor, Berks. They're only customer support, and they don't seem to have relayed to Shibata that they don't have any customers there anymore.
  • Tell Reggie that his attempts to inject confidence come off as stupid, unwarranted levels of arrogance. Tell him to look at Sony, who somehow learned to go from "get a second job" to humble anti-assholes
  • Find out what people actually like about the machine... because it doesn't seem to me like they know what its most marketable aspects are, and despite things, a lot of people do seem to like it.
  • Buy proper shelf space in the biggest game stores and supermarkets. Gamestop, best buy, walmart, asda, tesco, mediamarkt etc. It's come to the point now where retailers have no reason to stock the thing unless they're somehow encouraged to.

Go third party for consoles and make VC games on iOS. Become exclusive to one of Sony or MS so the licensing fees will be reduced significantly.

- Cut Wii U's price ($250)
- Follow through on selling extra GamePads as accessories
- Make an even cheaper SKU ($200) without a GamePad and with a Pro Controller
- Take a bath on financials for a year or two due to these cuts
- Make a AAA new IP and actually be serious about it
- Aggressively market
- Keep doing whatever with the 3DS
- Maybe launch a sleaker, better made version like the DS Lite
- GET A REAL FUCKING ACCOUNT SYSTEM

My humble opinion

1)Fix online/account system--get along with the times, people have certain expectations

2)Focus on just one device--Multiplat third party is completely useless, fuck them.Pour all your dev efforts into one device.
Target everyone(as much as you can),starting from children.

3)Start from home market, home consoles are not a big factor there.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So yeah,make some handheld/smartphone/console hybrid,something that can be a full blown console(TV out,controller support)/quality handheld device.Smartphone form factor + console functionality+high quality Nintendo games.

Smartphone market just needs some good bitch-slapping,imo.Do it Nintendo :punch

As for WiiU,use it as a cover.

As far as the Wii U, I don't think there is anything you can do there. That system is gone. You can drop the price and do stuff like that and lose money but its still not going to save it because its competing with used PS3 and 360 systems at this point.

As far as the future they have to determine what kind of company they are and who who their goal audience is. That's bigger than the small detail features. The Wii U was such a weird step because it seemed like a move away from everything that was successful with the Wii. It was more "hardcore" in that it was more like a traditional system. It was more complicated by comparison. It was an odd half step trying a keep a foot in the old with backwards compatibility but not really expanding on the concepts of why the Wii originally was such a big deal.

I think they're fine.

They own the handheld world and no one else is even close. Just keep pouring money into it's online infrastructure and make your next device similar to what maxy said: Portable, but flexible.

Chasing after the 16-24 demo is death. They haven't had mindshare among them since the mid-90's when they had the JRPG boom going. There is not one 'AAA' title or concept that is going to win them back.

Making old shit over and over doesn't work forever. Even now we're seeing Mario run into the ground. Zelda feels saturated too. Even Smash is kind of feeling old. Yeah, they could bring back F-Zero, but I guarantee it wouldn't be any kind of big leap since GX is already what most people would call "perfect."

They need a fantastic new IP once a gen or they risk the same thing as not replacing a car's motor oil. GC it was Pikmin, Wii was Sports/Fit/Play shit for casuals and Xenoblade for gamers. What's Wii U got/getting on those levels of support from Nintendo?

This, but I think they still should make their games avaible on Android and iOS. Release a Nintendo Shop app so their games won't get lost on the respective app stores. Take a loss on the own tablet device. Release controllers for ios and android devices as well. Software wise, to a Virtual Console subdivision on the shop, maybe with a subscription based model or sell people the same old shit for the upteenth time, will be easy money. Smartphonify those franchises that can be monetized that way (Pokemon, Animal Crossing). Keep making 'traditional' games a la Mario and Zelda. If X-Com can be sold for 20$, Nintendo can get easily as much. Experiment with the type of games, try if both more handheld type games and console type games can succeed on one flexible platform. Maybe do cheap 3-5 $ games that keep people interested in Nintendo franchises until the own device and market is ready to be released.

WiiU should be phased out as quickly as possible, those people that bought it might be frustrated but they're a)not a lot of people b)probablly so much Nintendo faithfully that they will take anything from Nintendo.

They'll probably have to focus on one device, but that's bad news for them. Cuts off a revenue stream and makes them less diverse.

Just a simple console with NO GIMMICKS would be enough.

I'm not sure it is enough. It certainly didn't help the gamecube.

I don't know that there is room for 3 home TV consoles that all fight over the same share of gamers. The Wii was a megahit because it tapped into a different audience. The question is whether that audience can be tapped again or are they permanently gone to other things.

Almost every problem Nintendo is facing now started with the N64 era, they managed to stay alive during gcn but and the wii was a fluke that masked how far behind they have really fallen in the last 12 years.

Nintendo doesnt have any modern games for one, everything seems set in that n64 mindframe still. Give the masses some aaa hollywood gaming next to your traditional fare. Make online normal. Etc.

What nintendo needs to do is to change into a modern company fast or go 3rd party.

The smartphone/tablet market might have room for more diverse games than a handheld or console individually tho, especially in the future if the console market runs into the problems expected by some people. Of course, with some games that are very similar and successful on both handheld on consoles (Mario Kart is probably the prime example) it's a problem. Although in the case of Mario Kart they tend to release only one iteration per system and generation, so they probably could get away with a similar release circle (about every 2 years) for one device because relative to other franchises that's still not that often, even if they cannibalize some of the long term sales. Or they use the freed up development teams to make some new stuff.

The Gamecube was a good console from a hardware design perspective. I'd say the best of its generation.

And yet it still flopped. That's my point. It's not about just putting out a decent to good system. Nintendo has mindshare and marketshare problem along with its actual problems relating to attracting third party developers and the current hardcore consumers that constitute the gaming base. And more mario and zelda isn't going to fix that.

$100-120 Roku style streaming device. Virtual Console access, free Angry Birds type games as well as titles priced similarly to mobile games, full 3DS integration. And a Pokemon MMO.

Scrap the WiiU.

Axe the WiiU and make a handheld that can stream to the big screen. With a good VC service, not this trickle bullshit. Lower the price on the VC games and add a "Netflix" style system - you can play whatever you want for like $10 a month but you can also buy games to have them permanently.

Either that or just keep on releasing all these crazy wacked-out console concepts until one of them sticks. And when it does, support it (say what you want, but I think Operation Rainfall is the perfect example of Nintendo losing their clout with their traditional fanbase).

How does the Virtual console stuff work on Wii U and how deep is it.

My Wii was collecting dust by the time they started to put the decent older games on that. And I haven't followed the Wii U at all. How good is the selection, how are the prices, etc?

Prices are the same as Wii VC (although Earthbound they charge $2 more than all the other SNES games), but the library is extremely lacking even what the Wii had - Earthbound is the only U-only VC game. Updates aren't nearly as consistent. Nor are there non-Nintendo consoles (Genesis/Turbo/Turbo Duo/Commodore/Neo Geo) on there yet I don't think. You can transfer games over to Wii but have to run them in the system's "Wii Mode".

Also, they should expand the market for gaming too... not just North America, Western Europe, and Japan. I know they've tried this a bit in China with the iQue, but continue on this route, with country-specific advertising... perhaps have 'freemium' options for these countries.

Brazil has a storied history of gaming, but new consoles there are ridiculously expensive, due to gripping tariffs. For the price of a PS4 in Brazil, you can buy Wii/WiiU/PS3/PS4/360/One/Vita/3DS... you can buy a PC that would give Smooth Groove a boner... perhaps Nintendo can open manufacturing lanes up in Brazil to nullify these tariffs and further establish themselves in Latin America?

How about Eastern Europe? Cut deals with developers over there to publish their games, exclusive to your platforms? To my knowledge, there is nothing quite like Eastern European games anywhere on consoles (apart from the Witcher 2 360 port), and they're responsible for unique and interesting games that recalls the older days of PC gaming.

India too... I don't know much about gaming in India but there's certainly a lot of coders there :P Spare a few rupees (no Zelda pun intended :P) and open some studios on the cheap. :bow BOLLYWOOD GAMING :bow2

- Fire Iwata ASAP

- Cut their losses on the Wii U.  Do a Vita and have Wii U be super friendly towards indie developers and let them do their best to keep the thing afloat.  They won't but it's better than sitting on their hands until 2016-2017.

- Cut a deal with Roku or someone and have their next console be a media player console hybrid.  $150 price.  It won't be too high powered but according to Nintendo fans, power never means anything and is actually a detriment.  So it would come with a controller that functions as a remote.

- Release NES games on mobile platforms.  There will be millions of people who will pay $5 to play SMB or Zelda on their iPhone or Android.  It will be a source of tens of millions of dollars for them on annual basis.  Probably more money than they will ever make from Super Mario 3D World or if they just stuck to Nintendo only platforms for virtual console games.

- Start releasing freemium titles.  Mario Party, Wii Sports, and Wii Fit are good candidates.

Also, I know people hated the waggle (deservedly), but the pointer functionality on the Wii controller has a ton of great gameplay uses in more traditional, 'hardcore' genres, which were only slightly looked into on Wii.

And advertise, advertise, advertise. I was talking with a lot of people yesterday at the monthly arcade/pinball/retro gaming meetup I go to, and most of them didn't even know the WiiU existed (nor my girlfriend before she met me, and she owned the original Wii).
