I haven't seen footage yet; is this just an entire game with the same conceit as 9-Volt's minigames in WarioWare?

Oh shit, had no idea this is out already! Nor that it's made by the Retro Gaming Challenge devs (although the 'challenges' in the oldskool games are reminiscent of RGC). Game looks right up my alley...

I have to admit this is pretty awesome

There are 6 games unlocked at the outset, each with a few dozen challenges (some challenges are multi-stage). When you beat a challenge you get a star rating based on time. Stars unlock new challenges in the "Remix" section that seem to be one-stage affairs that are a little more in-depth and sometimes shake up the original gameplay.

When I got a hundred stars I unlocked a seventh game. There are sixteen in all.

Sounds like its Retro Game Challenge 3, really. What's the problem with that?

Yeah this is actually surprisingly fun

You can see how they're trying to use this as a marketing tool for these titles on Virtual Console too. The first challenge under every game (or the first few in some cases - like Excite Bike) actually teaches you how to play the old NES game -- the fundamentals, in case you didn't know them. It teaches you things like how to jump three barrels at once in Donkey Kong, or how to do the 1up trick in Super Mario Bros. Later on, it also straight up invites you to go to the eshop and buy the old game in some instances:

[close]

But I've not seen any of that yet. Besting quick challenges set in the original games unlocks 'remix' challenges, which are nicely rendered versions with new twists...

ie. theres a Mario runner level, you can't stop him running - cheep cheeps are flying about and you've got to get to the goal. Or donkey kong in darkness with a limited field of vision. There's a level of Mario Bros where you have to collect coins within a very tight time limit by controlling multiple marios at once - its like using cherry mario from 3D world. On this level below, the camera keeps zooming out only stopping or zooming back in a little when you kill an enemy... so if you don't kill them, it gets harder as time goes on:

I've not unlocked anything past the first 6 games yet, but it seems like a cool pick up and play arcade game -- if you like high score / time attack modes, and like the idea of getting cheevos in those old NES games, you can jump from one to the next really quickly. Its not exactly like 9-Volts minigames from Wario Ware (though I do see the connection), and "rom hacks" doesn't really do it justice either. Its not a bad minigame concept. It'd be nice if they did SNES remix or something down the line...

I love how even bitching about the controls loads up from Miiverse

He's got a point though. Its not just classic controller, my Wii U pro controller doesn't seem to be working with it either. And you can't button map like in VC games... A and B are A and B. Luckily X functions as B in some games.

Isn't part of the fun in Retro Game Challenge playing this parody games though?

/Still will pick this up someday when I want to bother entering billing details and stuff into the Wii U; or plugging it in again for all that matter.

it's just a matter of timing, stand still and jump when the turtle is coming at you,if you did it right you'll create a loop where the turtle bounce of the wall then goes back right to mario feet as he's just falling from the small bump he gets everytime you stomp an enemy

The minigame starts off with you doing that already, but you have to do 10 in a row and Mario falls off at 8. How do you maintain it? I tried tapping right on the dpad or timing the jump button but nothing seems to change the outcome (unless I press right too far and fuck it up completely).

It sucks that more than half of SMB1's stages are behind this one.

have you tried moving a little to the left instead? the whole point of the trick is that you bounce it in a way that it loops perfectly so the minigame might start with you being too much close for it to loop

Doesn't answer the question

Haven't tried that, Mario gets bumped off to the left after the 8th 1up when you do nothing so I kinda doubt that's it.

Info online for NES Remix is pretty slim but it looks like you have to mash the A button, something I don't think you had to do in the original.

Looks like it does to me. Position yourself at the right moment - and the work does itself. Dont get sassy cause you can't beat a Nintendo game.

the trick for that one is you have to jump and land from just the right height - not too high, not too low. look at where the game positions you when you drop down and get 8. you want to be a bit higher than that to get 10+

Read the post, NES Remix starts you off already jumping on the thing. In the original game the work did itself, in this version you fall off at a certain point before you hit your objective.

I've triple starred almost everything in this game btw.

I'll try it again later, but as far as I can tell hitting the A button doesn't do anything to change what Mario is already doing when the challenge kicks off. Left and right on the Dpad obviously does, but not in a good way.

Hoo boy. Doing all rainbow everything here, just Remix2 and Bonus stages left. Some of the SMB1 and Zelda rainbows are kinda hardcore, you need a lot of previous gameplay experience to get some of these. Really great
