Yeah this is actually surprisingly fun
You can see how they're trying to use this as a marketing tool for these titles on Virtual Console too. The first challenge under every game (or the first few in some cases - like Excite Bike) actually teaches you how to play the old NES game -- the fundamentals, in case you didn't know them. It teaches you things like how to jump three barrels at once in Donkey Kong, or how to do the 1up trick in Super Mario Bros. Later on, it also straight up invites you to go to the eshop and buy the old game in some instances:

But I've not seen any of that yet. Besting quick challenges set in the original games unlocks 'remix' challenges, which are nicely rendered versions with new twists...
ie. theres a Mario runner level, you can't stop him running - cheep cheeps are flying about and you've got to get to the goal. Or donkey kong in darkness with a limited field of vision. There's a level of Mario Bros where you have to collect coins within a very tight time limit by controlling multiple marios at once - its like using cherry mario from 3D world. On this level below, the camera keeps zooming out only stopping or zooming back in a little when you kill an enemy... so if you don't kill them, it gets harder as time goes on:

I've not unlocked anything past the first 6 games yet, but it seems like a cool pick up and play arcade game -- if you like high score / time attack modes, and like the idea of getting cheevos in those old NES games, you can jump from one to the next really quickly. Its not exactly like 9-Volts minigames from Wario Ware (though I do see the connection), and "rom hacks" doesn't really do it justice either. Its not a bad minigame concept. It'd be nice if they did SNES remix or something down the line...
I love how even bitching about the controls loads up from Miiverse

He's got a point though. Its not just classic controller, my Wii U pro controller doesn't seem to be working with it either. And you can't button map like in VC games... A and B are A and B. Luckily X functions as B in some games.
