Impressions:

- Dialog and character expressions are still as good as ever. The convict for the first trial was a laugh riot.
- So far it's the same old thing, but that's a GREAT thing.
- I was really hoping they'd get rid of the silly animu magic thing (like the Fey's, who can talk to the dead). It felt so out of place in the original, but it seems it's even more plentiful in the sequel.
- Presenting profiles adds another new dynamic to pressing and pointing out contradictions.
- It's still trial and error, but it's fun trial and error.
- The music seems to be a bit better this time.

I'm really liking case 2. The story is more involving than what was presented in many cases in the original, and the characters are all interesting. I can't get enough of Phoenix Wright. Despite the fact there's been silly "spirit channellings" involved I'm finding myself not minding much.

I love Maya despite that so I'm sure that's why. I'm on the edge of my seat for this case!

Yes the megatama (I think thats what its called) is used frequently. Get used to it. Also the game has really out of place
internet fads (memes) placed into the dialog. It sucks.

You like maya because pearls clothes are way too small for her. PEDO.

Jeez, PW2 is so much harder than the first.

This game is adventure game sex. With all the people saying it's not as good as the first, I've found they've upped the ant on almost every single problem I had with the first one, with the exception of the supernatural elements. But even then, they've presented the supernatural stuff a more interesting way than in the first so I don't really mind, even though I still think it's stupid.

I've been stumped on Case 2 for a while and this is a good thing.

There's this new feature called Psylocks. They're basically locks that appear around a character whenever you're looking for some clues and they're hiding something. The bigger the secret, the more locks, and in order to unlock just one lock you have to show enough substantial evidence while trying to get the character to spit out the juicy bits. The thing is that if you present a character the wrong info as you're unlocking, you lose health (there's a health bar in PW2, both in court and on the field). When you lose all your health it's game over. This gives the player more incentive to think over their case, clues, and the overall situation before guessing so I've found it to be a lot more open ended than the first.

I think I'm half way done with the second case. It's pretty long.

I just. I mean.

Here's my PW experience:

- Click around a mostly static environment until you find something
- Attempt to go to court/open new dialog
- Realize you must have missed something
- Click around another static environment
- Repeat until court time
- Experience a court room "comedy" that's about as funny as Everyone Loves Raymond
- Realize there is almost no way to lose and that if you do, somehow, lose, the case will unfold exactly the same way
- Just press everyone, okay?
- Repeat 5 times and endure the adulation of people who have no taste.

This isn't adventure gaming, this is. Hanging out with Grandma gaming.

It feels like an animated story where you press a few buttons to get to the next screen.

Granted, I've never played any other point-and-click adventure games.

I really loved the first 2 cases of the first game. But it's the way that the game pretty much FORCES you to win. You NEED to get all the clues in order to win the case. It's an "On Rails" adventure game. I would've liked if there were maybe 4 or 5 "secret" clues in every scenario that would make the case easier to win. Say, a hidden murder weapon or a missing shoe or whatever. Just some intrigue.

Once I realized that the entire game was "Tap tap tap read tap read tap tap read read", it got old quick. It was like doing the same logic puzzle over and over.

It's indeed a game, one made in the style of older point and click adventure games like The Unvited, Deja Vu, and Shadowgate.

PW isn't animu. Really, the only animu related things going on in PW is the stupid supernatural bullshit and the character designs.

I have no problem with animu, I like some anime depending on what it is. My problem is ridiculous plot lines and stuff like that. Summons turning into motor bikes and shit (FFXIII). feggits who've lived in a house for 7 years without coming out once for bullshit reasons (ToA). Crappy over the top stories that don't fit in it's time line with taco shop keepers who sell you things while flirting with you (Shadow Hearts Covenant).

I don't mind animu as long as it fits or it's presented well, and PW's pro's out weigh it's negatives. In any case, PW is fun enough for me to forget the animu, and it's setting compliments the over the top animu stuff, so it's not all that bad at all.

If I had a problem with all animu I would probably not like any Japanese games at all MAF. There is a time when you just deal with stuff in order to have fun. If I have to deal with faggoty women who can contact the dead while having a fun as hell adventure game, I don't mind. Because it's fun.

I spooge over Shin Megami Tensei and it could be considered animu, but I love it. Why? Because it has ass kicking, demons, eating things alive, mature themes, and it doesn't insult my intelligence. Animu isn't bad, depending on what it is, so you can stop generalizing MAF, and go back to your business.

It's indeed a game, one made in the style of older point and click adventure games like The Unvited, Deja Vu, and Shadowgate.

I call bullshit on this. Those were great games. They did not take place in a collection of static environments, there was a kind of alchemy to the way you had to use inventory to advance to new screens. The puzzles were different everytime and your success was not a requirement to advance; It was incredibly easy to die and/or invoke a fatally false solution.

PW is the same logic puzzle over and over (Find out where x is lying, call them on it) where it is nearly impossible to fail (You MUST have found all the evidence to advance to trial).

Kind of like how in most point and clicks it's "mix object x with y" or present  object x to person y?"

Unless we're talking Grim Fandango, which has the best puzzle variety, it's just mixing things and presenting them to people, which is what most traditional adventure games boil down. Your description mostly describes the entire genre, it's just PW does it another way.

Hell, even I'll admit I wish PW was more non linear, but I'm not going to get that and I'm not going to complain that much, because you come down to it, adventure games aren't really a non linear genre. Play Monkey Island and you'll see that it's just as restrictive and linear as Phoenix Wright, the difference being you actually walk to places by clicking.

I finished case 3 in PW2, and I think it's my favorite PW case so far. It was completely different from the others - the witness at least. I felt really bad getting that Not Guilty because it seems in the PW universe, getting a murder charge equals the death penalty...and I sympathized with the murderer so...

You're welcome to put up an argument, but I rather like these type of games. I'm just saying the quality isn't as good as the first one.

And if they do a third one, I'll play that too.

I'm not going to stop you from playing a new Xenosaga, and you won't stop me from playing a new Phoenix Wright.

ah, but with a new xenosaga, i usually stop after about 1/5th of the game and then sell it back, all the while blushing with terrible shame at having been duped by gaf and my own need for turn-based number-crunching.

the phoenix wright games are third-rate PC adventure games with animu faces. pass!

Dunno about that. What don't you like? I think the cases are better. The third and fourth case tend to put a unique spin on things, and are more memable than half the cases on the first.

The dialogue isn't better, but I think the gameplay is a big improvement.

Part of what made the first one special to me was the music. The music in Justice For All is good, but it can't compare to PW1.

Also, I think Justice For All's cases are just as good as PW1's cases, but the characters that you encounter are worse. Goddamn clown...
