That Japanese Castlevania guy has left Konami
« on: March 17, 2014, 12:09:26 PM »
Quote
Koji Igarashi, best known for his work on Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, has left Konami. His last day at the Japanese developer was Saturday, March 15.

The producer departed the studio with intent to open a new development studio.

"I've decided to break out on my own to have the freedom to make the kind of games I really want to make -- the same kind I think fans of my past games want as well," Igarashi told IGN. "Leaving Konami was a big decision, and not one I took lightly – I’ve spent my entire career there, made many friends, and had a lot of great opportunities – but I hope all the gamers and fans who have supported me in the past will join me in being excited about what comes next. Wish me luck!”

He's a good man.  People give him crap for Metroidvania diverging from the original Castlevania and crap for making the same game over and over again without much innovation.  But his games were really fun for the most part and I can't hate on someone who continually makes enjoyable games.

Since Konami won't let him make anything worthwhile, glad he's getting out.

He's got a GDC presentation on Friday about Metroidvanias.  Expect the Kickstarter by the end of the week.

Pretty excited right now, not gonna lie.

same here. Finally he is freed from the shackles of Konami. He is probably going to get a higher budget from kickstarter than he ever had with Konami.

How did Iga get gooch'd exactly? Did HoD and Ecclessia not sell that well? Or did Konami just not see he was worth the investment despite his cheap titles?

Nah, Konami killed Konami. Kojima's been wanting to do different projects for years, but MGS is the only cash cow Konami had. Can't blame Kojima for the fact that when he attempts something new, Konami goes "the fuck is this shit? Go do Metal Gear!"

(Reason why we got Metal Gear Rising: Team wanted to do something different, Kojima couldn't let it be a new IP because Konami would probably have shot it down)

Then you have shit like Hudson where they just killed it.

What? Konami clearly killed Konami. Konami politics pushed out every single famous or notable director and designer they've ever had. Every single franchise of note they've had gone to shit. Every single fucking one. Many of whom Kojima simply could not possibly touch.

I think Kojima being chained to MGS is his own fault.  That series is his baby and he refuses to let it go.  He's also got Castlevania's blood on his hands.

The rest is definitely Konami, though.

Eh, LoS 1 wasn't totally him. IIRC, he just oversaw the project. Probably why it turned out better than LoS2 which didn't have his supervision on it.

I'll agree that MGS probably killed Konami though. That thing was WAYYY ahead of it's time and Konami's been trying to chase that "cutting edge" thing like George Brossaurd or however you spell his name from 3D Realms doing Duke 3D.

Kojima "oversaw" the product?

He was just figurehead executive producer to increase sales.

He supervised it, Drake. He went to MercuryStream a few times, saw the cutscenes mostly (of course</sarcasm>) and the gameplay. As far as the game-game itself, that was MercuryStream but Kojima had some input in how it went in regards to the game. I won't say it was "him" fully on LoS1, but I'll say him looking into it was a factor.

Dave Cox made a plea to Hideo Kojima who used his clout to get it approved.  Apart from putting his studio's name on the box and giving a few story notes, my understanding is that is the full extent of his contributions.  But that first thing he did pretty much cut IGA's throat and Castlevania's at the same time.  It's going to be a long time before Konami lets the IP come back from selling 100k WW off a budget over $10 mill. Lords of Shadow was initially pitched to Konami and turned down.

I'm going to have to go look for those Kojima tweets from 2-4 years back, aren't I? I could swear he supervised about 40% of the title.
