GDC Presentations for old farts
« on: March 17, 2014, 12:36:20 PM »
Yu Suzuki is having a keynote with Cerny on the history of Shenmue at GDC.
Iga is doing a Metroidvania retrospective as well.

Where can we watch these? Will we be ALLOWED to watch them? Can you watch live?

The only way to legitimately watch these GDC sessions is to see them in person. But you'll be fine since I'm sure half the crowd there will be journalists furiously typing away at their keyboards so it's going to get a ton of coverage. Also, there are Lucasfilm Games, Robotron: 2084, and Zork postmortems for you classic game fans.

They have the recorded sessions available online but only if you have purchased an "All Access Pass" for GDC 2014 or buy a GDC Vault subscription. At some point in the future they may put it up here for free.

I'll let you know how it is. :shh

Not sure if you can view the schedule without a login but here's the link: http://schedule.gdconf.com/list.

There are also some modern postmortems too covering Guacamelee!, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, FFXIV Realm Reborn, Rain, and Puppeteer.

Oh shit, I didn't know they could stream the sessions live!

Man this is awesome, I was really bummed that I had to miss a few of these because of meetings (AND BECAUSE I PAID $1000 JUST FOR A GODDAMN CONFERENCE TICKET).

Shenmue has a lot of licensed stuff that stop it from getting a re-release.

"post mortem"

I mean, some people have compared Shenmue fandom to disgusting aberrations like necrophilia, so maybe?

Thought this was really cool.

Pretty much places the bulk of the franchise in China as expected. Though, this was for Virtua Fighter RPG and not Shenmue.

Shenmue III taking place in rural China would be a great 180 to the urban decay of the Kowloon and the city sprawl of Honk Kong, but it could have been a bit redundant given the naturalism on display in the Guilin chapter. Maybe, maybe not.  I wonder where else Ryo would  go.

I really enjoyed Yu going into the tech they made for the Gulin section of Shenmue II which helped create a large dense forest with such small space. Very inventive tech.

Shenmue II still is the most beautiful and wonderful game experience I've ever had. I'm mad he's pushing II to a new keynote but then maybe again that means more juicy details. :bow

Polygon did a decent article that covered Bioware Montreal's Manveer Heir talking about how games ought to start tackling social injustice head on instead of dancing around the topic. At one point he describes a game that I think the Bore would love
Quote
Heir posited a game where a soldier comes out as gay to his unit, and as he works to build their trust and acceptance, the unit cohesion and fighting prowess of the unit grows stronger over time.
It's not a long read so just give 'em a hit and enjoy
http://www.polygon.com/2014/3/19/5528066/mass-effect-manveer-heir-gdc-social-injustice
I hope there's a video eventually

Well, I'm pretty surprised that it's such a hamfisted narrative and gameplay concept.

And also completely surprised that such a talk references something like Papers, Please and its negative yet memorial portrayal and then kinda runs away from it to pursue an endlessly positive vision of combating stereotypes.

Disclaimer: Going by Polygon's summary, I have not seen or read the talk or anything from Mr. Heir beyond that.

P.S. Fun comments.

Holy fucking shit GDC kicked my ass, rofl. I just woke up from sleeping for 14 hours straight. I was too busy networking/job hunting/in meetings to make it to a lot of GDC sessions so I'll be catching up in this thread and looking online for other session coverage. Hopefully I might have some good news in the near future to share :hyper

articles on Igarashi's talk;
polygon
Quote
Igarashi also shared his guidelines for making good Metroidvania games. Developers must make it fun to control the player character and eliminate any potential points that would make it feel stressful; this must also be the same character from start to finish, although players should be able to unlock and equip new items to change up the available actions. Maps must also promote exploration, but not be completely free. There are limits, Igarashi said — if the player simply clears a game, maps that have been created with a single path don't promote revisiting. Revisiting areas can be a burden, unless players are determined to unlock every last item. Players that do revisit areas should be rewarded with new items.
Quote
In terms of balancing out enemies, Igarashi stressed the importance of boss fights. Developers should focus on balancing boss fights and making them the best they can be, since "the bosses are the stars of the game." Igarashi shared his rue of thumb for making bosses: The boss programmer should be able to defeat the enemy without taking a single hit. That's how you know the boss was developed correctly, and it clearly demonstrates signals for how to defeat it.
Quote
"I know I've been away from games in this genre for a while," he said. "But I hope things made sense. I want to believe one of the reasons why this speaking opportunity came up is because we're seeing less of these types of games and many fans are waiting for the next one. And now that I've gone independent, I can create things as I wish and not adhere to the company's wishes. If there is a desire, I believe I will be able to turn that into reality."

gamasutra
Quote
The team was tasked with improving the game's controls and extending its lifespan, without meaningfully conflicting with the canonical brand. An early significant decision was to remove death by falling, a standard of the fairly grueling earlier Castlevania games. ("we hated, hated falling to your death") he says.
Quote
"Also it can be effective to guide the player along the main path by adding items to branches. It provides an atmosphere to the player, and at an early stage I try to provide moments where the player is unlocking new areas through the skills they have acquired."

"It's not a 'stage clear' type of game," says the pioneer.
