I'm currently in the mood to play a whole smattering of random games... I usually stick to a few genres, but I'd like to try something a bit different. Simply, pick a game for me to play, something I would normally never go out of my way to play. I think you all know my tastes by now, if not just search my posts, or my 360/PS3 achievements (AfrikaShoxx is my username) :P

The only exceptions I have:

-Nothing that requires an insane time commitment (i.e. no MMOs), I barely have enough gaming time as is, and it's only gonna get worse until the end of May.
-I'll gladly give an average or flawed game a shot, just nothing universally reviled (i.e. Superman 64, ET, Big Rigs)
-Nothing on a platform I don't own, aka PS4 or Xbone (though I also lack 3D0, Jaguar, 32x, old British microcomputers, etc. but I have most of the big retro ones covered)
-I'd prefer to acquire the game by legal means, so something accessible. So no Saturn games that will cost $200+, no old DOS games that are only available on 5.25" floppies. I have Steam/GOG accounts, access to the Virtual Console, and will go to Ebay (provided the games are available at an affordable price).

Best and most original response will be the game I play...

Pretty sure Tiesto's played Planescape.  He's got most wrpgs/jrpgs covered I think.

Have you ever tried a resource management focused real-time strategy game? The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom and Anno 1404 are both excellent. If you want to try something newer you could get Banished.

this is likely a doomed enterprise.  no offence tiesto, but if i think of people who are really resistant to going outside of their comfort zone, you're pretty much #2 on the bore.  not that you won't *try* the game, but you'll probably keep yourself from enjoying it if it's too far outside the yard.

I'd have to agree. You have a very specific taste. Nothing wrong with that but it seems like stuff you would "probably never normally play" coincides with style of games you don't like. Meaning "Western". Once again nothing wrong with that. It just seems like a waste of your time.

For what it's worth my tastes have certainly narrowed as I've gotten older. I don't play the wide variety of games I use to play say 10 years ago.

As far as I know of you tiesto, you like rjpgs, probably shootemups, anything japenesey and probably platformers or action platformers.

So first I'll offer one PC Adventure game:

Syberia - Story focused game. Point n Click, but one of my fave point n clicks.

Otherwise:

The Banner Saga - Oregon Trail with Vikings

Awesomenauts - MOBAs are sort of the new ass stain to replace the old MMO ass stain of toxic communities, but this one actually requires platforming, aiming, and has a decent community.

Guild Wars 2 - FUCK YOUR RULES ABOUT MMOS! But yeah this can be played casually and is the best bang for buck in gaming since The Orange Box.

Path of Exile - Free and pretty good, if a bit rough at the start. Not sure how you feel about isometric ARPGs doe

Fallout 1&2: Still some of the best western PC RPGs.

Psychonauts - One of my favorite Double Fine games and one of the best platformers of its generation.

I also recommend checking out other Double Fine games. They're full of dat good ole whimsy.

Thomas Was Alone - puzzle platformer with geometric characters

Binding of Isaac - Cheap, fun, replayable.

Well at least I'm number 1 at something.

I don't have to force myself to dislike Bravely Default and the 2DS. They do that on thier own.

Lots of great suggestions here! Thanks! I think I'm gonna keep referring back to this thread whenever I feel like "straying the course", but the main games I'm gonna try to start with are Alpha Protocol and Civ5, probably when I'm done with South Park.

Have you played Bionic Commando 2009? Alpha Protocol? Banjo Kazooie motherfuckin Nuts and Bolts?

I played the demo of Banjo Kazooie but haven't the other 2. Actually, I own a PC physical copy of Alpha Protocol that I picked up cheap a few years back, but never got around to. I'm thinking this is the game I will end up playing first (though I will revisit this thread in the future any time I want to stray from the usual course!). From what I've heard, it does a lot of really cool and innovative things, but the gameplay is clunky... I dig those decisive games more often than not so I'll have to check this out once I'm done with South Park.

Sleeping Dogs
Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death
The Yahwg
The Last of Us
Hotline Miami (did you play this?)
Gray Matter

Did I play a retro graphics indie game with a coked-out neon-tinged 80's Miami setting and a universally acclaimed synthpop/EDM soundtrack? What do you think :P Not familiar with The Yahwg, Marlow Briggs, or Grey Matter... Sleeping Dogs and Last of Us might be good pickups, the former being much more out of my comfort zone than the latter.

Planescape: Torment

Pretty sure Tiesto's played Planescape.  He's got most wrpgs/jrpgs covered I think.

Yup, beat it a few years ago. Great game, probably my favorite non-Ultima western RPG. I own a lot of the bigger western RPGs, if I haven't played them yet it's because they're backlogged... Fallout 1 and 2 (and New Vegas) were recommended in this thread and I own those too. I don't really consider traditional western RPGs out of my comfort zone, even if I haven't played/beaten nearly as many as I have Japanese.

this is likely a doomed enterprise.  no offence tiesto, but if i think of people who are really resistant to going outside of their comfort zone, you're pretty much #2 on the bore.  not that you won't *try* the game, but you'll probably keep yourself from enjoying it if it's too far outside the yard.

You'd be surprised... I generally stick to what I know I'll like... but I've been surprised in the past. And there are some times when I just want to get a bit "exotic". Normally I don't listen to metal but once in a while I get in the mood where I'll give Master of Puppets a whirl or turn on Sirius XM Liquid Metal. Usually if I go out of my genre, there's something else appealing about the game - not a huge racing guy but I love Wipeout for obvious reasons, ditto for rhythm games but I love DJ Hero 2 and the Project Diva series, also for obvious reasons.

As far as I know of you tiesto, you like rjpgs, probably shootemups, anything japenesey and probably platformers or action platformers.

So first I'll offer one PC Adventure game:

Syberia - Story focused game. Point n Click, but one of my fave point n clicks.

Binding of Isaac - Cheap, fun, replayable.

Really appreciate this list, Etiolate! You've nailed my taste to a tee and made some recommendations of games I either never heard of or are definitely out of my comfort zone. I do like point'n'clicks, though apart from 999/VLR (if those count), I haven't played much contemporary in the genre. I love the Myst games, and the classic Sierra/Lucasarts games... Banner Saga sounded interesting from your description, but reading a bit more about it, and it's mentioned they were influenced by Shining Force/FFT and the gameplay videos show it's a turn-based SRPG :P So yeah I'm gonna pick this one up but it's way too similar to what I'm already into.

Awesomenauts is a definite potential. I've never played a MOBA before, and the game has nice hand-drawn graphics. I've played Psychonauts on a rental, but wasn't crazy about the camera. The Double Fine games I've played (Costume Quest, Psychonauts, Brutal Legend) have great presentation, writing, and aesthetics, but I couldn't get much into the gameplay. Thomas Was Alone sounds interesting, looks a bit like the Impossible Game on XBL Indies... I've played enough indie puzzle platformers and I'd say they aren't very far at all outside my comfort zone.

this thread is now about amiga games

I don't have an Amiga :( How are the SNES Turrican games though? Those are something I'd play anyways... 2D run and gun action games with awesome music?

Have you ever tried a resource management focused real-time strategy game? The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom and Anno 1404 are both excellent. If you want to try something newer you could get Banished.

Only RTS games I've ever played are Starcraft and Total Annihilation. I'm not familiar with either game but my coworker (who's a big PC gamer) mentions Anno 1404 is like SimCity (series I love). But yeah RTS games are pretty far out of my comfort zone, especially those with a learning curve (not sure if these are easy to get into).

Oh and play Civilization V with BNW and Gods and Kings DLC.

This is definitely a good one... in fact this and Alpha Protocol are gonna be my top 2 picks. It's a long-running series that I've never played before, one that seems like it would be intimidating for a newcomer, but I also like history so I'm sure I'll find something to enjoy once I make myself get into it.

Took me 30 hours of civ before I felt like I understood how the game kind of works.

If you haven't tried puzzle and dragons, try that.  Only mobile game worth anything and it's free, unless you are a gambling addict, then it will cost you your house and soul.

You can play Alpha unstealth. It's fine, just janky. I did and had no problem.

But Masquerade is a better choice for someone who probably dosen't care for TPS, sadly that game kind of goes to hell at the end and you need to fight  a lot. The combat kind of sucks.

Have you played Alice Madness Returns? Remember Me?

Alice is a pretty fun and easy going platformer. The combat is actually pretty decent and more of "rock paper scissors" puzzle type thing in the end. Cool visuals as well.

Remember Me is a AAA MOVIE game with weak, but sometimes interesting Batman AA combat. The music may be up your alley.

It's really the aesthetics and ideas the game conveys that make it interesting.

What about Bastion? It's a charming and colorful isometric action rpg. It's also indie and people love indie games.

Play Alpha P before Civ. Its shorter, and if you end up liking Civ you will be deep in a Civhole for many moons. Almost all the people here on the Bore who play it have like 200+ hours on it. Also, alpha p is hilarious. Just dont get too impatient with the shitty intro area. It gets turbo awesome after that. For the love of god make sure you play stealth though.

You can actually spec for fighting in Alpha P, and just run through the game kung fu'ing all the baddies. No stealth required.

Alpha P is like one of the most innovative decision tree games, like your choices do directly affect how the game unfolds and how people treat you. It wipes its ass with lesser games such as Mass Effect and Walking Dead.

Both are closer to SimCity than a hectic competitive RTS like StarCraft. There normally isn't a tight time constraint and instead you have to focus on carefully planning the layout of your town. Instead of having 1-3 resources to manage you have 20+. It's more about logistics than combat.

of course you don't have an amiga,it's 2014! nobody owns an amiga anymore except people that also own weird museum or something... but you know what you own? a pc that can run WinUAE without problem and as an added bonus you won't have to deal with the shitty loading times and the constant disc swapping

that said i never played the snes turrican games but they are completly different games... but turrican 2 has all of the run and gun and awesome music you want, i also picked apidya because it's another pretty kick-ass shooter full of weird boss fight (if you watch the video there is a whole bit where you fight a freaking trout and a fight against a rat carcass)

gobliins 2 is a point & click adventure and is part from a trilogy of point & click adventure's, i like 2 the most because of it's music and the background which are... well...

i don't think i ever played a graphic adventure more fucked up than gobliins 2 and there are tons of adventure games on amiga (though most of them are also on DOS)

other amiga games that i think are worth a mention

- Robocod is another sidescroller where you play this crabbie thingie with the ability to extend and attach himself to cling on the ceiling on a mission to rescue santa claus, there is a stage where you fly inside a bathtube and that's all i have to say

- Wizkid everything about this game is fucked up,everything... the game is divided in 2 part basicaly... at the start of each level you play as a disembodied head and you have to push blocks toward cute creature like butterfly and penguins which die in horrible splatters, after doing this for a while you gain a body and the adventure part begin, the adventure parts are completly random, often trick you into do the wrong thing and sometimes are just plain absurd (like this level where a woman bark in time with the music)

- the amiga had a really shitty port of street fighter 2 which is the reason why i think this game happened, Shadow Fighter is a decent one-on-one fighting game with a somewhat big and diverse cast including a cop that looks like it just came out from a YMCA video,a genie,a midget clone of ryu and mostly important a basketball player called slamdunk that shoots fire(basket)balls so that you can actualy pretend that you are playing shaq-fu 2... one curiosity about this game is that it was made by a studio called NAPS team which as far as i know it's the only existing italian videogame developer, they later developed a 3D fighting game on psx known as Gekido

- Moonstone is a game that i think would do really well if it was resurrected for the modern era, 4 knight go on a quest to find some magical talisman and they get to murder tons of monster in the most gorish way possible, my favourite is the swamp one who pops out of the field with a high pitched piano tone like some cheap horror monster... as a bonus point you can also be a dick to the other player and steal all of their stuff

- North & South is basicaly a strategy game but when it comes to actual battle you order your troop like in an action game which make for a weird mix (especialy when you decide to assault a train in which case the game turns completly into a 2D sidescrollers) the game was remembered well enough to get a shitty redone version for ios years later

- arcade conversion were common enough on amiga, stuff like Rodland,Dynamite Dux,this james bond inspired game here and mostly important a lot of taito games like bubble bobble, rainbow island and a decent version of the less known Parasol Stars

- Cannon Fodder is basicaly a top-down shooter made somewhat hard and annoying by the fact that everything (including your own soldiers) die in one hit,one nice touch is that if some of your soldiers die,you can still clear the mission but the dead soldier are replaced by new recruit and the dead soldier buried in this giant hill after a very cinematic roll call so if you let one of your guys die you'll have to bear it FOREVER

- bitmap brothers was a pretty prolific developer on amiga, making game like Magic Pocket and Gods but their most famous game (which in fact i think there is some redone version on steam) it's Speed Ball 2 a futuristic sport game that's sort of like soccer and american football together... there is a pretty big league mode where you use the money you win to power your player through cyber implant and like but the best part is that you can punch the shit out of the other player until they leave the game,is the goal keeper annoying you too much? punch the shit out of him!

- these days team 17 is probably know as "the guys who did worms" but back in the day they too worked on amiga, and made a nice platformer known as SUPERFROGGGGGGGGGGGGGG it's a really nice sonic wannabe game (some cheap death though...) one annoying gimmick is that the game is password based but the only way to get the password in a stage is to win it in a slot machine game, that basicaly means that if you are unlucky you are potentialy screwed into losing your hard earned progress

- CORE was another developer that released tons of sidescrollers, like Premiere in which you play as a guy as he traverse diverse style of movie's while trying to gather back some movie clips

- Battle Chess is just chess but with animation everytime a piece get eaten, they even made a star wars version in case you want to see a stormtrooper actualy hitting stuff

- Pinball Fantasies is one of the most famous pinball game i know off, they even got a PSP port

- Ruff'n Tumble is another nice shooty side-scrollers

- Lemmings should be pretty well known but there were a lot of lemmings game on the amiga, this one is my favourite as it's the one with the most gadget, lesser strict requirement and more variety

- Pushover is a puzzle game about creating domino effect,it looks simple enough but as you keep playing domino that split, don't fall or bounce the chain gets added which makes thing more complicated as it goes on and on and on...

- Dune is a game that mix adventure element with strategy element inspired by the same old-ass movie with the same name, later on they also created a sequel which was one of the first (if not the first) RTS game to be created

- The Lost Vikings is a game made by blizzard before they became blizzard, you play as 3 viking, one viking can jump, one has a shield to protect from attack and the other has a sword to punch stuff and you have to switch between them to make it through the stage

- Captain Blood is another to chalk in the "weird games" section, back when i was a kid i had no idea how this game worked but thanks to the internet now i know! basicaly the gist is that you have to explore the galaxy, find 7 replicant aliens and murder the shit out of them, problem is you don't know where the alien are so you have to land on planet's and then speak with the resident's there using this weird symbol interface to discover where the replicant are hidden

- Flood is another sidescroller, this is one of the earliest game bullfrog has done

<----
