Well, Donovan's already out and Dempsey, Jones, and Beckerman won't be on the squad for the next WC.  That leaves some holes to fill, but I'm optimistic the US can use that salary cap space to sign some key free agents.  Also wouldn't mind them trading Eric Lichaj and Brek Shea for draft picks.

Again you guys have some facilities there, I wouldnt even be mad if you poached some good young Africans and South Americans and get coaches to get them to world level in the next 12 years.

USMNT wishlist for the next WC:

1) Julian Green and Juan Agudelo develop.

2) Altidore finds a stable club situation, rather than signing with a mediocre EPL team where he gets no service and struggling as the lone forward.

3) We get to see Grandpa Tim Howard still playing at a high level for one last WC.  Sorry Guzan!

4) Miscellaneous pleasant surprises, like Brek Shea turning into the player it looked like he was going to be in 2011.

5) The US poaches Gedion Zelalem from Germany.

I was given a 2014 US Soccer home jersey today and want to get Green's name/number put on it. Do any of you know how I find a location of a store that can do this?

couldnt you get this done at any sporting goods store, or those places in the mall that do custom sports gear?

I'd hit the yellow pages and call around to local sports equipment places.  Even if they don't do customization themselves they'll probably get that question semi-frequently and know where to point you.

They may or may not be able to press on letters/numbers depending on the process by which the jersey was made, but I think your odds are better with a white jersey where there weren't a lot of shenanigans involved in getting color in already?

tim howard just saved US football from being thrown in the despondent waste basket.

i saw a guy on the tube in a US SOCCER shirt looking totally dejected and it hit me how shitty you guys have it for the next four years. he was talking with his friend and his singular point of focus is the next world cup. england shit the bed, but in a couple of months we can look forward to euro 2016 qualifiers, the premier league and champions league all getting underway.

it's such a drag that you guys can't be part of UEFA. i know you've got this CONCACAF pride thing going on for the WC, but it really seems like some awful purgatory for a country whose football fans are so european leaning.

i just can't see how MLS is going to grow either. i mean, despite the EPL's reputation, we still bleed a lot of our best players to la liga. how the hell is MLS supposed to hold on to any talent that comes through?

joining UEFA would solve so many issues. you'd have a major international tournament every two years and your top clubs would at least have access to the highest tier of play, even if they're just group minnows for the first decade.

i guess it's just fun to have you guys around. can't you just annex what's left of the ukraine?

We're always gonna lose some big talent to the Euro leagues, but MLS is doing a good job developing young talent and hanging on to some big names. I honestly don't pay much attention to the big leagues while ignorantly enjoying and cheering on my Sounders.

Youth soccer participation growing into something where people actually  who want to go pro is the hardest thing to accomplish. Which is why I'm really glad that despite our loss, we showed guts.

I'm really anxious how this loss will drive American soccer going forward. Will it help damage it? Aside from Ghana, we had a draw and two losses. How will this translate to new American soccer fans?

That Kareem article makes good points, but ignores EPL game ratings and the fact MLS mostly does not have a tv license like NBA or NFL. More than that, soccer is rarely heavily advertised outside the World Cup.  Fewer people watch MLS on tv because for most people it's not ON tv.

We have academies iirc; and I believe the fruit of that is showing in spurts like that U-17 America vs. Brazil cut I posted above.

Deandre Yedlin is a product of the Seattle Sounders FC development academy.

I'll reiterate what I said about soccer's overall popularity, the development of American players, and the success of Major League Soccer being three different goals.

It's simpler for fans in England, Germany, Italy, and Spain.  Following your domestic league lets you watch top-level soccer, support a local team and attend games, and see the best players from your country.  For an American to get the full experience, you could go to MLS games, watch EPL and CL broadcasts on Saturday mornings, and then use the internet to keep tabs on American players in the Bundesliga or elsewhere.  It's a weirdly fractured, involved way to follow a sport, and it has to be an obstacle to growing a wider fanbase or attracting more casual followers.

That said, I'm not super worried.  The sport is way more popular than it was 10, 15, 20 years ago and MLS certainly has a higher quality of play.  I don't expect it to reach parity with the big European leagues in the forseeable future, but I think that's okay.  It needs to keep the level of play high enough that people will be interested even with EPL games being so available, and to serve as a developmental platform.  France, Portugal, the Netherlands, etc. never see their best players stick around in the domestic leagues, but you can trust the youth systems at places like Porto and Ajax to give top-level coaching to prospects.

The US obviously has a long, long way to go before it's a threat to the big European and South American powers, but as someone who could name most of DC United's lineup from the inaugural year of MLS, this is easily the healthiest soccer has been in the US in my lifetime.

Himu

  • Senior Member
Yeah, the whole European quality thing is a pipe dream. At least for now. I feel like being better than Mexico (both in competition and in club play) and developing great talent  are better short term goals.

Mexico

That shit still hurts. I get that the matches have been great, competition has been higher than World Cup's of the past, and everyone's a winner. But Mexico giving up 2 goals within 6 minutes of each other, combined with that Wondolowski miss at 90+3"....

Honestly, I don't really want US soccer to improve too much. A huge part of the allure of the event is being the perennial underdog that everyone kind of dismisses.

If the US becomes really good, then you start to have expectations. Which turns winning  into a relief of anxiety instead of a feeling of intense pride or euphoria.

yeah, the team i support is basically mostly garbage so there winning still actually means something.

Turning up to games was great - I often wondered what would happen if you supported one of the power house teams like United or Liverpool of old when every home game you were pretty much nailed on to crush whoever you played.

That angle is nice.

If that entry pass were just 6 inches in front of him, Dempsey might have had a better chance to control the ball.

Well, I believe our own coach dismissed them (from having a chance to win it all). He was right too, because our program is a step below 5 or 6 other programs in depth and offensive talent, even though the will and the money are there.

It's not a terrible place to be. Much better to have the surprise of success, rather than the overwhelming dread of failure that many fans have (Portugal/England come to mind) when their team doesn't go through.

USA needs to work on offense more than defense, IMO. Though both need work, the ability to score goals and complete counter attacks is highly important. Will be tough going forward however, with the best of current line up retiring from international play soon.

I'm fascinated by American goalsetting to win the cup.

I mean the Dutch football association set the goal for Holland before the World Cup to reach the semis. This was seen as unrealistic by most already. Yet USA goal was set for the cup.

Maybe it has to do with the immense pressure Euro sides are under and managing the expectations. I mean a bad cup actually effects the economy here.

Himu

  • Senior Member
USA goal was not set for the cup. USA goal was for the quarter or semis. :beli no one but idiots thought we had an actual chance on the cup. Most of us in this thread were pressured on whether or not we'd get out of group.
