Why don't they just dig up his body and marionette the skeleton up on stage. I'd pay to see that.

Yay, more posthumus crap of songs he wouldn't have released if he was alive.
the album is actually pretty good.  Love Never Felt So Good, Chicago, Loving You, A Place With No Name are definitely awesome.  The others range from no worse than what's currently on the radio to good

Are you joking? The song I've heard so far sounds like early solo Quincy Jones era MJ due to the production. It sounds very, very good. And it isn't like Invincible was good.

Prince, Erykah Badu, Big Boi, Esperanza Spalding are all legends and have made tracks with Janelle. Your Janelle hate is illogical. Janelle and MJ would be like peas and carrots, especially since Janelle  can vocalize similarly to a young MJ as seen in the track It's Code and her cover of I Want You Back.

Why do I get that feeling Each is not an r&b fan or even remotely knowledgeable about r&b? "Dress it up as poppy but add instrumental flair"? :what Clearly not the words of an r&b fan or someone who listens to the genre.

Also notice how he only brings up popularity, as if anyone cares. Shows the vapidity of a Jay-Z fan. Michael Jackson was a Sega fan. You think he gives a fuck about that when he co-stars in Space Channel Five?

In any case, if Michael Jackson were alive, he likely wouldn't work with Janelle. Maybe he would? Who knows. But Janelle has worked with many black music legends, from Esperanza Spalding to Prince. So it's not that far fetched. With all fairness to Jackson, he was always one who valued marketing and advertising and hooking up with relevant stars to build his name (see: Britney Spears, Justin Timerblake, Usher, Michael Jordan). But since he's DEAD, and we're just talking about fun fan shit, we have no reason at all to consider real life math. Who cares? Janelle is the best live performer in modern mainstream music today; MJ is one a legendary live performer. Janelle can sing her butt off and has an insane vocal range; ditto to Michael Jackson.

Please spare me the logistics of Janelle's popularity when all I care about it seeing two talented musicians sing their asses off, you all about the money Hov stan.

Michael Jackson did a collab with Jay-Z? Goddamn, there's no way he'd recover from that and his career didn't. Collabing with Jay-Z killed Michael Jackson's career because sucks that hard. That makes him a total slut and made me change my opinion on MJ change.

:rofl at Janelle Monae being the best live performer in mainstream music, I don't even know what to say about that. There's no way she's seeing the theatrics of something like a Kanye West performance, so ima let you cook with that one.

I'm just saying, it's a pie in the sky collab in nature. And If I was all about the money i'd stan Dre instead. You just can't look at things you like realistically.

I don't think Janelle Monae is bad, dude. I'm just pointing out what I think she is, is all. And I don't listen to exclusively 'mainstream' music either.

So I like the hip hop artist with the best discography and the greatest production of all time :yeshrug

Whoa there, I like Jay too. I can give you production, maybe. But best discography? That's straight stanning.

3 Classics, a few great-good albums (Vol 1, 2, AG, The Dynasty) average albums with high heights (WTT, Vol 3) I'm comfortable saying it. He also has plenty of great one-off songs, unreleased material, and features.

Your Janelle critique would make sense to me if Neo soul hadn't been a thing in r&b since the 90s. That's a big part of why I can't take the whole Janelle is just black music criticism seriously amid a genre that cherishes its roots above any other. Janelle is following a line of tradition of Neo soul artists - such as Prince, Soul II Soul,  Zhane', Tony Toni Tone,  Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill - that has existed since the 80's.

I have no problem with people not liking Janelle because she's "too weird" because that's why I like her. But the whole Janelle isn't on that tier argument when most mainstream acts are terrible is ludicrous, and the idea that Janelle isn't original because she hijacks old black music hilarious - because again, that is a tradition going on in the genre as.far as Prince.

I feel like I'm arguing with a cac who just discovered TLC, Esch! You're better than this!

I think Nas has a better discog too but didn't list him for that reason. I mentioned multiple rappers who have better discogs than jay and I can keep going: Slick Rick, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, KRS, A Tribe Called Quest, Blackstar, Blackalicious, People Under the Stairs, Easy E.

Jay Z is a top 50 rapper but nowhere encroaching on the top 10. Top 20, max.

I agree radio is the best it has been since at least the 90s. But that doesn't mean most mainstream acts aren't terrible. The change in radio has been driven by a select few. It still doesn't change the Taylor Swift's or ALL MY NICCAS ARE RICH AS FUCK.

Nas has four classics.

Illmatic, It Was Written, Lost Tapes, Stillmatic.

A few good-great albums.

Distant Relatives, Life is Good, God's Son, I Am.

A few meh-bad albums.

Hip Hop is Dead, Nastradamus, Streets Disciple (which I think is good but not getting into that).

Nas' track record shits on Jay's to the point where it's straight NASty. :jawalrus

FYI I rarely like throwbacking music of any kind, as Wrath would probably know I hated the new wave of American Thrash as well. I don't listen to any of those artists heavily, and probably like an album from them apiece.

You said that today's mainstream music is really good. Today's mainstream music is FULL of throwback music. In fact, with the funk craze, it is now officially in full swing. :what

A couple years back, I used to like Nas more than Jay. I saw him as more of a 'legitimate artist' You know what? I read more, learned more, listened more, and I realized how many flaws he has as an artist. He writes incredible verses, but picks the worst beats and hooks and choruses and feature artists on what I assume is some cheap shit. He preaches on one track, then contradicts himself with sellout shit on another track on the same album. There's no ideological coherence. His production selection is terrible, and half the reason I like the genre is because of music. The truth is? He's not really different from Jay-Z from your typical rap fan "moral" perspective. He's jumped on trends, sold you violence, alcohol, clothes and strife, done collabs with pop stars etc. The only difference is that he tries to apologize for it by waving a pro-black flag, and his pop shit fails because he never mastered the knack of having fun on his shit. Then I seriously dug into Jay's career.  Jay-Z seriously has the best production of any hip hop artist ever. Let's take an objective look at the people who make the music for his albums; DJ Premier, Kanye West, Just Blaze, Dr. Dre, Ski Beatz, Timbaland, Pharrell, Swizzy, Irv Gotti, yadda yadda.) Pretty much the best of every possible lane. And these people gave him some of the most memorable and incredible music in hip hop. I realized his versatility then. At his prime, he could rap over any and everything and make it great. He's not the best lyricist, but he has a special ability that no other hip hop artist has; he intuitively realizes how to get into the pockets of a record, let it breathe and work for HIM. He's always had the ability to be a fast, technical rapper as well. You only have to peep around the lesser known parts of his discography to realize that. But he chose not to, for the sake of making SONGS. Why do you think his shit is so memorable? Why do you think he's been around for 20 years? Not just because he has a knack for identifying the right music and knows the industry, but because he consistently approaches beats with the right attitude. And then he builds cohesive sounding albums on top of that. He's easily the most well-rounded emcee IMO, after 2pac. His only weakness is socially conscious shit.

:yeshrug

I agree with all of this, except that I still think of Nas is a legend. 2Pac filled his albums up with filler. He's still a legend.

When it comes to rap, you can't critique albums like you can any other genre. I can't think of a single perfect rap album outside of Illmatic. That's the type of concessions I make when it comes to rap. It's such a flawed genre with bullshit, that you have to step back and say,"okay, Nas contradicted himself, but that's okay, that's what rappers do. 2pac calls women bitches in one track and idolizes his mom in another track, but it's okay, comes with the genre."

I think the problem here is probably that you have a different standard and set of expectations when it comes to rap than me. Production is great, but most of Jay's albums are forgettable and he's only got two classics: Reasonable Doubt and Black Album. Everything else ranges from hilariously lame to solid. As an artist, I definitely think Nas had higher highs. It's really hard to call Jay-Z an artist here, since he's mostly a businessman, as you have expressed so in this thread (jumping on the most popular shit).

There's a funk craze? Or are you just talking about Daft Punk selling a lot cause they're Daft Punk? And that was mostly Disco, too.

Started with Daft Punk, expanded with Pharrel (Happy), and stuff like Blurred Lines which as funk-isms. I expect to see it in full swing by 2015.

Vol 1 and 2 are solid. I didn't say they were bad. Blueprint is solid. I never "got" it.

As for Wrath and Daft Punk, Daft has never been as popular as they are now. Saying they're popular because they're Daft Punk is 100% incorrect. Their latest album was their first platinum album. It has finally put Daft Punk on another tier, at least in to America. Also, Get Lucky was funk, not trademark disco.

That was RE: Blueprint.

Dynasty is a great album.

TBH, Volume 2 and 3 have my most cherished Jay-Z moments. Some dude coming out of nowhere with Hard Knock Life, then Can I Get A..., I love those albums despite the fact I don't think they're particularly great.

Ghostface has more albums that are legitimately great and is a better rapper on just about any level (story telling, metaphors, evocative lyrics, etc). There's a reason he's generally viewed as the most consistent rapper by many hip hop heads, if not most.

Iron Man, Supreme Clientele, OG Bulletproof Wallets, and Fishcale are better than any four album set you can come up with for Jay, Nas, etc. And I'll take his "solid to good" albums (Big Doe Rehab, Apollo Kids, 12 Reasons to Die) over Jay's albums of similar quality.

On Kanye, I'll take Kanye's catalog over most of Jay's albums outside of Reasonable Doubt.

I did NOT spend my entire adolescence hating on Jay. I LOVED Jay in middle school.
