It's gotta be rough, overworking one's entire life, losing touch with one's own family by being constantly ABSENT, overworking so badly that there's no room for hobbies, only to retire and have NO relationship with family, and NOTHING to do with one's time.

I'm a gaijin salaryman.  :'(

You're in Japan?

Eh, bunch of un-ethnic people here talking about lotion. Sorry, we don't all have your bland colored  skin. Kind of need some lotion. Sorry, my skin is unfortunately dry after taking a shower.

Guys, moisturizer tips.

When you get out of the shower, pat dry. Do not scrub. Scrubbing can slightly damage you skin, and it also dries it faster. Pat dry, and leave small beads of water on your body, especially on your face. After you shower, you have about 3 minutes before the water seals. Put your lotion on immediately after drying off, and the lotion will seal in the beads of water. Your skin will stay moisturized all day.

Your welcome.

Houston is humid and I still get ashy. Doesn't really matter about climate, I think. It's mostly about skin type.

At the risk of pedantry, if you're in your own country, you're not "gaijin," a fact I once pointed out with a surprising lack of venom to a Japanese barber in Honolulu. While you can be a salaryman/sarariman, with ludicrous work hours (or you could be a workaholic), the excess of the work environment in Japan is really endemic.

My last company here, everyone worked 11 hour days everyday, and 16~18 hours, 7 days a week during crunch. They did this without overtime or comp days, no possibility of using their PTO up, and knowing they'd not get paid out their remaining PTO if they quit. I know a half dozen people from that time who had nervous breakdowns, a couple came close to karoushi. The fact that the Japanese have a word for "working one's self to death"  implies to me that the system here is fundamentally different and broken.

None of which is meant to demean your schedule in the least.

Speaking of which brehs, can we discuss how cocoa butter lotion smells kind of bad? Maybe it's because I'm constantly around someone who uses it all the time now, but it kind of kills the mood.

huld up

I didn't even know cocoa butter and black people was a thing until I started listening to a lot of rap as a kid. I was never really ashy as a kid - only time I get like that was if I didn't dry myself off after getting out the shower. Every now and then my hands need some lotion but it's never a major issue. One of my brothers is super ashy, the other two are fine.

Your skin gets dryer if you don't use a towel after getting out the shower. When I was a kid I'd sometimes jump out and not remove any water from my arms, face, etc. I also had a dry scalp issue because I wasn't drying my hair after showering. My hair is very curly and naturally wavy, but last year I noticed I was getting heavy flakes; wasn't dandruff because there was no smell. My barber told me that you have to dry your hair, you can't let the water settle into your hair or it'll result in flakes.

Your skin gets dry because you scrape dry instead of pat drying. As I said earlier, you have a 3 minutes before the water on your skin dries. Drying off with a towel is fine. You were just drying off the wrong way.

I wasn't drying my arms at all as a kid though. But you're probably right about pat drying for hair. Just this morning I was kind of scrape drying it. Next time I'll pat it.

Still, my hair has been very lush lately. Got a fresh cut on Saturday. Might post pics after work  :whew

Always fun when you see white people who assume everyone else has skin/hair type like theirs.

When I first got to college, I asked what a good black barber shop was and they were in aghast as to why I needed to go to a barber shop for black people.

The Biz is of course on point in this matter. Soap is just for pits and privates, though I do shampoo about once a week, my hair is just so thick it can get sweaty and start to smell bad and get darker since I'm blondish

Naw, most of them do live in a bubble regarding other peoples needs. Like, I don't suggest pat drying because it's feminine and makes me smell like flowers. I'm suggesting it because, in the case of hair for example, black type hair dries out really easily, and a lot of peoples hair growth is stymied by dry hair and lack of moisturization. Scraping also damages the hair, which damages, extremely easy. By pat drying, you leave in water which, when used with an oil helps seal the hair with moisture so it doesn't look like shit. The same is true for skin. Our hair and skin need pampering in order to look good, but mention this in front of white people and they lose their shit with the culture shock or in the case of Andrex, make fun of you.

Fair enough. Just is disappointing because to me anyone with a lick of sense knows the skin needs some kind of care and that different skin types exist. All those white people who are shocked would probably look way better if they took care of their skin! My wife takes great care of her skin, it's like dipping in milk :drool

When we first moved to the suburbs, my mom took my brothers and I on a search for a black barber. We went to Fantastic Sams for some reason and they straight up told us they didn't have any experience with black hair. Shit was embarrassing.
:tocry

I've had a really good barber for the last few years. Older black guy. I tend to not like younger dudes cutting my hair because they don't follow directions. If my hair gets too low it looks like I have bald spots, due to my waves. A young barber will just quickly cut your hair and then I'm like bro, I said not too low!  :-\

:bow COCONUT OIL :bow2

I put this on my daughter every night after bath. Really helps with dry skin.

Afros are considered "unprofessional" by many companies. The cultural bubble I spoke of manifests in the most fucked up of ways. What's more fucked up is when blacks think they're unprofessional as well.

Was not so subtlety implied that I should cut my hair when I was hired at my first professional job. Wasn't too long, probably just past my nose uncurled (I have absurdly coiled hair). Black hair just isn't something white people are used to seeing I guess.

Got promoted, stopped giving a fuck, and eventually got clearance to work from home. Haven't had a cut in close to a year now. But I'm still bitter over it.
