Designing Woman had a major black character on the cast. I want to say Grace Under Fire had a black character or two as well.

I think judging from the delta between white viewership and black viewership I think the answer is indeed "Seinfeld"

There's more to race than black and white though and everyone likes seinfeld. There's even a curb episode of shaq watching The Contest.

ok.  all I remembered about that show were the white women with shoulder pads and big hair.

My reading and ctrl+f skillz both slipping.

What's the ruling on Saved by the Bell?  Lark Voorhies, sure, but depending how we quantify whiteness it'd score pretty high IMO.

Himu

saved by the bell has mario lopez and Lark voorhies. dunno why you guys consider non-white to only be black

I think a show can be pretty "white" regardless of one or two token minorities

Himu

  • Senior Member
It can be, but the whitest shows are the ones with all white casts and people who are non-white may struggle relating to. it's odd but it helps change the perception of the show even if it's just one or two minority characters. Not always, but it helps.

What are the odds Lopez doesn't tick "white hispanic" when he's filling out the census?

A lot of black and mexican folk I know like Saved by the Bell, so it's a non-starter.

Also black folk like Boy Meets World for some reason :hitler

:yeshrug Boy Meets World is relatable. It's not like other shows featuring white characters. The characters grow through a lot of shit and aren't just upper class bohemians living in manhattan

NewsRadio seems like a pretty big missing piece of the puzzle right now. Kind of like Seinfeld where it's not a show about white people problems and it's not at all unaware...but at the end of the day, who watched it almost exclusively? White dudes. When I get a chance I'll comb over the current suggestions for more.

Okay, a couple of serious suggestions here:

Yeah, they're 80's holdovers, but they aired into the 90's so they count.

Going back to watching old favorite sitcoms, episodes, or scenes is always interesting. It's one of the quickest ways to gauge how far you've come as far as your choice of humor goes. As far as I can tell it's been: laugh with the laugh track > laugh at slapstick/animated humor > laugh because your English is finally good enough to understand rudimentary jokes >  laugh because you finally have a grasp of subtext and innuendo > laugh because you find the writing genuinely good and clever.

When this thread was created I went back to watch this scene. I remember gasping for air and almost peeing myself when it aired. Starts at 5:00.

also don't forget, zack is 1/16th native or something

that was such a good episode

It was. :tocry

I will defer to the people on Saved by the Bell, I feel like it was pretty white and its minority cast members' identities as minorities were not terribly relevant to the show (Running Zack episode aside). Kelly being Polish seemed like a bigger deal than Slater's or Lisa's identities to me, as an example, and really all that was was the old WASP "ha-ha look at the Pollack with an eye chart for a last name " schtick.

At least there were semi-diverse casts in stuff like power rangers, All That, and Captain Planet. Funnily, these were the more popular shows. Along with things like X-men where half the characters were blue. Thinking on it, this could be a big reason why those shows were as popular as they were, because a lot of people had someone to relate to watching them.

But the popular adult shows mentioned in this thread rarely embraced this. Just odd.

Also the "villains" on Captain Planet who were just hardworking businessmen with really strange fetishes or horrible backgrounds who needed help, while the Planeteers were a bunch of moralizing kids kidnapped and brainwashed into supporting an eco-terrorist.

"Captain Planet" was a collective hallucination as they were setting bombs destroying property and killing workers.

Also, although it was an 80's show that just barely spilled over into the 90's, it's hard to top the CACness of Newhart:

on this episode of frasier, frasier/niles tell a big lie to a woman, co-op their dad into covering for them, and get outed. lulz.

alt: frasier/niles scheme to teach their dad a lesson, they appear as hypocrites, get clucked at by roz/daphne. lulz.

frasier was about as funny as anal ebola. it's THE litmus test for cacs: ever laugh at an ep of frasier? you're pureblood cac.

if you laughed at murphy brown, you're an ancient cacpire, the sire of all cacdom and you should have your demonic ass burnt on the altar of good taste.

I don't know how much I laughed at Frasier but I'm cac enough to like it and probably smirk a few times. Plus it had nice scenes like this:

It's kinda crazy if 30 Rock rebuilt most of the set just for that 15 second Black Frasier joke.  :lol

no one is disputing the whiteness of Frasier because lord almighty was that show bleached bone white and my enjoyment of the show does indeed make me question my non-white status

we are arguing about the show's quality and hence its eligibility in this esteemed exercise

it's all good though because full house will win in a landslide and then we can hopefully move on to determining the least white shows of the 90s, shout out to ghostwriter!!!
