Movie didn't even look good, surprised that it brought racism out of people. Clint is a good director though, but his stuff is definitely hit or miss. Letters from Iwo Jima is pretty underrated, follows Japanese soldiers during WW2, from getting enlisted to fighting in a battle.

Windows 8 forced me to 8.1 yesterday after like two years of ducking it. I do have to give Drinky/MS props: It did speed up some of the sluggishness I had with 8.

I'm really hoping Windows X (Window Sex, get it? Anyone? :fbm ) is their "we fucked up with Win 8" goodwill tour. The fact they're tearing Metro's full-screen out is a good start. Now if they could fix the games they fucked up with 8 that worked fine in 7 (granted not a lot of them but still)... I'd almost forgive them.

but yet they are now merging it with the start button in an attempt to get some exposure

 :beli

will be in wait and see mode (unless they have a dirt cheap upgrade option like they had with 8 :hitler )

Let's be fair: They're allowing you to rip it out (but not remove it completely. :beli ) of the Start Screen. Another "we want you to upgrade, please" capitulation from a misguided attempt to merge things that shouldn't have been merged.

still not sure why they though that thing could work tbh. For tablets and mobile devices? yea i can see that, but for a desktop? nope.

Gran Torino is alright. It was an oddly fun movie, even though the movie itself felt really overbearing and heavy at times. Letters From Iwo Jima is his best work. Seriously, its a movie about war but it isn't overly sappy, melodramatic, nor is it dull or boring. Really personal movie based on actual letters and accounts I believe, Pearl Harbor it is not.

Flags of Our Fathers is about American soldiers during WW2, and it isn't nearly as good.

Vietnam war movies are imo the best because they tend to be about just how fucked war is rather than glorifying it

Also: Vietnam war movies > all other war movies.

Best sub genre of war flicks. Or I probably think that cause I find the Vietnam war to be the most interesting, I dunno.

I'd say WW2 for myself.

Patton
Midway
Inglorious bastards

etc
YMMV

WW2 has the most diversity when it comes to movies but I find its subject matter overdone and the American hurrah bravado that comes with it kinda gross

WW2 definitely had some classics. IB, The Great Escape, Saving Private Ryan, etc.

Apocalypse Now and Fullmetal Jacket(yes, even the 2nd half) are the best war movies IMO. I also like movies that use the Vietnam war as plot device i.e. Jacob's Ladder.

Apocalypse Now :rejoice

Honestly don't even consider it a war movie. Just the greatest showing of people descending to darkness and insanity. Too bad it broke Coppola and his stuff wasn't the same after.

Saving Private Ryan is alright, if I'm putting the energy in watching Saving Private Ryan though I'd probably watch Band of Brothers instead.

The documentary, Heart Of Darkness, is a classic in it's own right. You should check it out if you haven't already.

Been meaning to do so for the longest. I think it was on Netflix for a while too but they pulled it (?)

I was actually gonna come in here and say how Letters from Iwo Jima is probably second best thing he's done as a director after Unforgiven.

I found it to be zzzzzzz typical modern war movie snooze fest. Then I find out that most of the movie is straight up lies and shit that wasn't even in the guy's book, so I threw it in the bushes for good cause fuck that shit.

Bradley Cooper did a decent job, I guess.

I wasn't aware of the back story, but I thought it worked really well as a film.

Kyle made a lot of things up apparently even in the novel. Which is some peoples issue with the book + movie doing nearly the same thing to "gloss over" the stuff he made up while making up more stuff.

I'm surprised at how generic and Oscar baity many of the Iraq/Afghanistan war films have been, compared to Vietnam films. Given the disillusionment with the war, recession, etc you would think there would be more hard hitting, "real" films. Many of the best Vietnam films came out in the 70s and 80s though, well after the war was over. Perhaps the same will happen with Iraq and Afghanistan in 5-6 years.

Lone Survivor is a good action film but I disliked the way certain parts were done cinematically, specifically the slow motion during the sacrifice scene and other parts.

Blame Steven Spielberg for showing the world that generic Oscar-baity war movies could make a lot of money.

Did GAF actually ban "PC master race" as a thing?

The meme has been "bannable" for a bit. I don't think that PC Gamer article was the cause.

No. GAF's had a blanket "ban" on PC Master Race for about two years now. They don't want people to use it as a "joke" because it leads to console wars. The PC Gamer article probably just made them put an actual BAN on it now if they see it instead of semi-ignoring/possible soft-banning it.
