I think it was mentioned here before, but I like how so many of these "anti-sjw" dudes suddenly turn pro-equality when it comes to beating women. :neogaf

this thread is great, the confusion, the back tracking, the fear of no one knowing what the "accepted line" on it is, etc.

Gaborn was a loser.  His claim to fame was reposting articles from Fark.  Fortunately for him, most gaffers had no idea what Fark.com was at the time.  Pretty much one of the first people to be celebrated for LCD thread creating.

- Yellow Light of Death
- Inferior ports of multiplatform games
- Inexplicably huge installs on some early games
- Get the grand opportunity to play half finished exclusive games like Heavenly Sword and Lair

Yeah, the launch era PS3 was a really good deal :neogaf

Edit: My favorite launch era PS3 controversy was the thread where Sega announced the 360 port for Virtua Fighter 5.  There was only one acceptable opinion: that you were outraged that it was no longer a PS3 exclusive.  If you were an xfag, you were forbidden to express any kind of positive opinion or you'd get banned.  I wound up eating a week long ban for saying that I was going to get the 360 port, seeing as how I owned a 360 and not a PS3 at the time.  It was a bloodbath.  Sfags had really raw nerves at the time because the PS3 was getting massacred in the first few months of its release while 360 had an exceptional holiday due to Gears of War.  Good times.

Sony got their shit together with the PS3 in the fall of 2009.  That means out of the 7 years the PS3 was around until the PS4 launch, you basically need to disregard almost half of its lifespan.

Solution: Don't click the threads.

The titles should've been slightly edited or something but the "sad news/depressing" threads weren't really anyone's problem but the people that clicked them and then gave him replies of "OMG WTF" instead of ignoring them, letting the drop off the front-page and not giving him the attention to do that shit.

Now the moderators pretty much lock them on sight because someone caught feelings that they couldn't simply scroll on by to "better NeoGAF" while still letting a bunch of bullshit float to the top.

I dunno. I'd say 2007/tail end of the PS2 hard-ware BC was pretty good. :yeshrug Wipeout HD and other such stuff was getting their stride on.  Yeah there was still a lot of jank (PSN is still janky three hardware launches later though so... :yeshrug ) but barring that it actually wasn't as terrible as 2006->2007/launch period was.

Anyone in that thread thinking blu-ray was worth it at the start? Thinking the PS3 at fucking $599 for the launch turds it came with was worth it?
  :rofl
 :neogaf

The mood and atmosphere around the PS3 launch was glorious.

EDIT: The concept of value is totally lost on a lot of Gaffers. The Wii was more valuable to a lot of people than a gaming console loaded with multimedia capabilities most people don't use or give a shit about. The 360, a console with the lifespan of a diseased rat, more valuable to a ton of consumers.

Warhawk was like the only good thing on the PS3 for a while.

Uncharted? (In before "too clunky") Wipeout HD? (In before "TOO HARD") Super Stardust HD? Blast Factor?

Then again I wasn't on the PS3 right when it launched, so maybe you're talking about that "before PSN caught it's stride/"PSN Arcade"-clone of XBLA era of the PS3. Yeah, most of the launch titles bar Uncharted 1 and Warhawk was complete crap.

Resistance. :yuck

iirc warhawk was a launch title, or close to it.  I didn't cop one until right before littlebigplanet, so I can't say much about it before that, aside from most of what was out there looking kinda asscheeks (mainly referring to resistance)

PS3 had some kinda interesting stuff in the earlier days that Sony just never followed up on that made it feel like the early PS1 days where they were just throwing stuff out that seemed based more on tech demos than real design pitches. I guess giving Starhawk a chance was more than generous, let alone letting Dave Jaffe take a shot at Twisted Metal again after Calling All Cars. (Did they ever fix the online for TM?)

You can really tell which losers live vicariously through this shit. It's not just vidya games to them. Imagine a multi billion dollar corporation being the only "relationship" of value in your life.

Resistance is the worst of the Sony FPS franchises, and considering the other is the boring as fuck Killzone that's quite the low bar.

Did Sony publish Haze? Cause if so  :yuck

IIRC no but they did moneyhat it and we know how well that worked out :sabu

Also PS3 was fucking garbage in the beginning no matter how many times value is mentioned as a defense for that dumb ass price tag.  :lol

also that first Playstation store they made  :dead

Looking back, its really weird to think that Home would end up as such a commercial success for Sony. They kinda threw shit at the wall to see what stuck, then eventually kept to turning Home into a PG-13 version of Second Life, which made them tons of money.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2014-09-30-playstation-home-sonys-most-successful-failure

At one point I thought LittleBigPlanet HUB was basically gonna be a PS4 successor to Home, but that ended up turning into LBP3. Everquest better be the bee's knees and make them tons if they went and shut down Home and Free Realms for it.

Its even funnier since they were taking mad swipes at Halo and how their story is way more mature  :hitler

Thinking on it, my PS4 library feels like an oasis compared to when I got my PS3. I pretty much bought it in the MGS4 bundle, then just got the earlier ps1 classics/ps2 games/occasional multiplat with BC until Valkyria chronicles came out. Didn't play uncharted until after trophies were a thing.

Playing Symphony of the Night and Suikoden for the first time thanks to digital distribution though. :lawd

I remember when the demo was released, people were saying how the broness was just cleverly disguised critique on FPS games that would be fully realized when the full game came out.  :heh

GAF's reaction to Home was the gaming equalivent of the Great White Hope effect. The pre-announcement hype was off the charts, a virtual orgy of self confidence and braggadocio. Then we learned the name which generated that next, awkward level of hype which only the children of broken homes truly cherish - it was that "hey guys I'd play with you but my dad is about to show me how to build a refrigerator" moment, soon after which you realize your dad is a drunk, forgets his promises, and doesn't really care about you...only to fall for the same trick next weekend.

Finally the actual reveal occurred. The hype officially turned into spin and mourning. "I never thought it would be a system seller, I thought it would be a game changer so I'm not disappointed..." "This isn't what I wanted but surely my needs are secondary to pushing gaming to the next level, which is what Home does.." "Only the Cell could create something this complex, guys."

Then the release. Nothing else to say...

Another fond sfag memory: Update 2.4

For years, sfags talked shit about achievements.  Then Sony announced that the next update would allow games to have trophies.  All of a sudden, sfags were all about trophies.  Update 2.4 even had a megathread where it had tens of thousands of posts.  Soon .gifs were even made about the update.  For some reason, trophies were infinitely better than achievement points but they could never really explain why.  Also saying that you liked the idea of achievements better than trophies got you on thin ice; you weren't instantly banned like you expressed interest in buying a 360 port of a formerly PS3 exclusive but you had to watch your back.

I could talk about the desperate attempts for hype on mediocre PS3 features all day.

This gen is so lame when it comes to meltdowns and fanboyism. Half of the discussion is about framerate and how the devs are raping PS4 owners in the ear if the game isn't 60 fucks per second. The other half is if the PS4 version is identical to the Xbone version, that the devs are lazy and they need to justify my own purchase for me.

OH!

It's because the PS4 is ahead of the Bone and the Wii U is dead last.  To sfags, all is right in the world so you don't see the dumbfuckery that you saw last generation when the PS3 was in last place until the tail end of the generation.
