I love how quick nerds just want to be disappointed about what's going to be a shitshow anyway unless it's kind of funny a la Avengers.

I don't even know why they're expecting much of Snyder anyway, I have yet to be impressed.

Snyder has made one good movie, that Dawn of the Dead remake. Other than that, he's trash. There's basically no reason to think this movie is going to be any good.

yeah. fucking adore it. once upon a time in the west is my favourite film of all time, so i've got a taste for earthy, glacial paced westerns.

Wolverine is actually small in the comics. I seem to remember various people complaining about the size of potential Black Panther actors over the last two years.

Dawn of the Dead, 300 and Watchmen are good Snyder movies.

The latter are only good because they are literal direct adaptions of their source material in writing and story and his directing style compliments the material.

Worse yet it was a collection of bad actors reciting dialogue with no emotion. Everything about the film was secondary to nailing the visuals. It was very Lucas-esque in that regard.

Mass Effect 1 was the worst of the 3, and the Mako was boring as shit :yeshrug

The only thing in ME1 that was better than it's successors was the music, nothing all.

Some people believe that sequels should improve upon flawed elements and features rather than stripping them away and making the title even more content sparse. That said, ME2 is great despite the downgrade-isms. Haven't played 3 yet.

The idea of Mass Effect was great. So Bioware's idea to improve upon it was to just erase everything that made it unique. :yeshrug Fair critique.

As a game:

ME2 >>>>> ME1

As a game world/story:

ME1 >>>>>> ME2

ME1 was such an ambitious title. Shame ME2 stripped it of almost all identity and coherency.

Like, does the Shepard having died thing even factor into ME3? Haven't played it yet. No spoilers. What an odd deus ex machina. Was it even that? Shepard dies so everyone is like,"Oh, you're alive. Cool. I'm mad at you" or whatever. What an oddly written game.

ME1 and ME2 represent two different styles of sci-fi to me.

ME1 is the Star Trek "space adventure" style with a lighter tone.
ME2 is the Blade Runner "dark moody" style with a darker tone.

I personally prefer the latter.

ME3 just went harder in on the pure shooter style. Storywise there was nothing there other than wrapping up the loose ends of your decisions from 1 & 2 in the shittiest way possible and then railroading you into one of three endgame decisions which were actually all the same thing.

Man, Akerman and Wilson were straight awful in their roles. The detached delivery works for Manhattan's character but everyone else (sans Rorschach and The Comedian) is, like you said, lifeless. I think the best description of the movie I've read is "a handful of great scenes strung together." Imo, those scenes (the opening, birth of Doctor Manhattan, Mars, The Comedian flashbacks) shine in spite of Watchmen's flaws.

Yeah because a final boss represents the entire game? The games entire art style is basically 80's neocyberpunk and filled with neons, and grit. Omega? The Afterlife bar? Illium‎? The abandoned child experimentation lab? It's incredibly dark.
nat

Himu

Most of what you described was art direction rather than actual content or tone, though. ME2 had the Afterlife Bar, but ME1 has the one bar you have a shoot out at on the Citadel. ME1 has Saren kill himself in my game. It also has Ashley potentially killing Wrex in a stand off, a party member dying who you have to choose personally, a colony that massacres itself from brain manipulating plant spores. I'm not seeing a difference between the games in term of tone really, just a larger emphasis in better art direction. Doesn't change that most of ME2's content is hokey and cheesy. :yeshrug

True. I hesitate to call it dark though, especially Blade Runner-esque. What I played ME3's demo was full on bro grit, however. It feels like, if Bioware had the budget they probably would have made the original game have similar art direction. Places like the club in Citadel and the gangs of Noveria certainly have hints of the direction they went with in 2.

Thinking of it more, the tone in ME1 is pretty grim. They're fucked. They're fighting dudes who are impaled on giant fucking spikes and come back alive. They know they're fucked. And reapers fuck the citadel up, and they're coming back!

Yes, I don't think they necessarily deviated in tone in the two sequels, but they just upped the ante.

No, I really don't agree with that. I do agree that ME1 was largely hot garbage in terms of its action gameplay, although funnily enough I think the vehicle sections in the Mako are a positive exception to the game's gameplay if anything, because on foot is a disaster. The real quality in ME1 is obviously in the conversations and the like. ME2 was a huge improvement in on foot shooty bits, but I actually think ME3 improved on them more still. While it isn't the leap that ME2 was, ME3's gameplay just feels slightly more refined and natural than ME2's did. I really enjoyed playing the ME3 multiplayer for a good while thanks to the good gameplay. I don't think there was any notable differences in the quality of the encounters between ME2 and ME3. Sucks that ME3 largely took out conversations though in favour of just activating canned lines in many instances, really weird change.

Mass Effect and Mirror's Edge hate hurts my soul. Those are probably my top two console games from that gen...pretty easily in my top ten favorite ever, too. I beat Mass Effect something like 24 times. I would come home from class, throw an album on, and zone out into muscle memory. The atmosphere, plot, soundtrack, and characterization of that game...damn. It was janky as all hell but it would still be an A+ if it were a hundred times worse because of those elements. Virmire --> Ilos --> Citadel is the best stretch of any game, ever. Mirror's Edge was just something new and fun and atmospheric. The atrium puzzle is a perfect moment.

Last gen's second crop of games with Mass Effect, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, Forza 2, Skate, Crackdown, Burnout Paradise, Geometry Wars 2, Assassin's Creed, Viva Pinata ... :whew

I prefer ps2 generations second crop myself. Also 32 bit era is my favorite gen. Last generation started on a really, really good foot. But by the end of it, I stopped buying big name titles aside from a few - usually one or two a year, if that. Great start, awful end. Digital titles saved last generation from being total dog shit, for me at least.

watchmen is one of the standing reasons i dont care for a lot of comic fans now. the constant separations they make between graphic novel and comic book, going to bat for a weak deconstruction series like its some grand impetus for comics, when its not even on par with its creators better works, and hard stanning a boring movie to said work. i was hoping man of steel would be campy, instead they tried to make it seem deeper than it had any right to be
