:snoop Listening to music for meta-internet-culture, non-enjoyment reasons is where I draw the line. It's a fun side issue but PC Music is dope in and of itself. Too many people try to avoid saying that with these social experiment justifications.

I don't think you have to think she's extreme to think she's eyeroll worthy on some points. But then, do people actually think she's extreme? Really? Wrong? Sure. But extreme? Have these people never been to tumblr?

:yeshrug You're right, some of her stuff can be super labored and sometimes she draws poor connections (among other things). And none of that is extreme, just as none of it invalidates her core position. But entitled manchildren think anything that remotely threatens the status quo of their AAA white male power fantasy factories is extreme. The GAF threads, social media, reddit, blog comments...dudes think this lady is out to wreck their lives. In reality it's basic observation with a few incorrect assumptions stemming from her limited gaming background. I find it hard to give her shit over that when the other crowd is so much worse and so much more entertaining. Even eyerolling.

tbh I hang around in one of the most liberal communities of one of the most liberal cities in America. So my take and the views of people around me might not be the best barometer for general consensus. Like, this party included a mimed DJ performance by a hyperactive trans dancer while the actual DJ pretended to be a bouncer in order to prove that fans react and interact more with individual personas than they do to the music those personas are creating and playing. And we were all super into that. Liberal scum personified.

Social Justice Warriors don't have to be extreme in the slightest to find themselves on the receiving end of sustained abuse campaigns from opposing extremists. There is a tumblr posting about POC in history (pictures of black people in europe, etc) and /r/tumblrInAction has declared war on this blog in a very similar way to how Sarkeesian is being treated.

Too bad, I thought she had been Fresh Princed.

however if she has actual interest in discussing things beyond GAF, I have no problem with her.

Does DY have a master's degree?

Yeah, in simping.

what are you talking about?

Fresh Prince left the forum because he got annihilated by Cheebs, who has a Master's degree.

And apparently DY_nasty simps a lot.

its the simping thing im asking about. when?

Pickles did you hear about the new FlyLo album?!?!?

You need to be out in LA already! Daddy Kev mastered the album and played some of it like....three, four months ago. And then Flylo played a bunch of it this past weekend. I know there's a listening party pretty soon too. It's REALLY REALLY REALLY good, I'm sure the GAF Hop guys are tired of me bringing it up already.

What style is he going for this time

Feels like he's trying to merge even more jazz elements into some of it--think of stuff like Stonecutters and Zodiac Shit as a baseline, very similar to Cosmogramma. More live instrumentation, lot of string bass, more open space for grooves to hit. Lot more breathing space within the beats in general, as opposed to jumping from thought to thought (which could just be how he is structuring the live show). He lingers a bit more on ideas and moments in them and fully develops portions longer than usual. But he also leaves room to go super hard a few times and it's the top of his game. Ton of fun.

He (and HudMo on Friday) played a fucking insane track I'd never heard by DJ MC called Y Fall, it was some "entire audience gasped in unison" shit when the Scorpion sample hit. Hard to convey on a recording but the entire field shuddered it was too powerful. Moments like that are why I love going to shows.

The Kendrick track illustrates what I mean by expanding on Cosmogramma elements. Like experiencing high speed space exploration with heavily layered jazz-hop as a vehicle.

I Feel Like Dying still goes super hard, his older material has aged so insanely well. It doesn't show well in videos but he has this ridiculous 3D projection field around him that makes it looks like he's trapped in the space tunnel sequence of 2001. Definitely recommend going to see his tour if anyone has a chance.

Thought you might appreciate this, he's been playing his FFVII mix a lot lately

But yeah, definitely see him when he comes through your area. He isn't playing the entirety of You're Dead but a lot of the stuff Daddy Kev tested/tests at Low End and the Kendrick track are in rotation.

There are a couple spread around Downtown/Little Tokyo/Hollwood and one or two in the South Bay but unfortunately the best one is Prohibition down in San Diego. Awesome place, great atmosphere, solid band Thur - Sat, quality bartenders. Wish I could bring it up here with me. Most of the LA clubs are higher class affairs, snobbish and all. Not a vibe I like to be around repeatedly but it's a fun time occasionally.  Blue Whale is pretty sold tho, more chill and a good place to be.

You can also do Record Club LA (RCLA) on Tuesdays and request/play jazz records.

Himu

  • Senior Member
What's the ethnic demo of most LA jazz clubs? Any black people?
IYKYK

You see some black folks but generally speaking it's older affluent white people and young professional Asians. Blue Whale is like that for example.

Bourgeois Pig is an awesome hangout spot that plays a lot of beat stuff and ambient/drone/noise depending on who is there. But it gets pretty jazzy at times too. Lot of artist types haning around pretending to work. Upright Citizens Brigade is down the street. Not quite the same experience but I think you'd enjoy it.

I'm down with that. You can also take the red line in NoHo to Little Tokyo. So, thumbs up. Is that area (blue whale) semi-safe for a woman at night?

When does the red line connect to Santa Monica?

The Redline doesn't connect directly to Santa Monica, but you could get off on Vermont/Santa Monica and take the 20 or the 720 down there (make sure you read the sign on the bus though).

Definitely safe, you won't have any worries there. It's on top of like...a Marukai and some anime stores and stuff. Very secure area. You'll have more to worry about getting home from NoHo (and not much to worry about there either).

As with all construction in California, don't count on that shit being finished anywhere near projected dates. I would bet late 2016 and hope for sooner.

Here is how to break free:

Between reality and how we see it are several filters, letting us see only a fraction of it, to prevent information overload. One of them are our expectations. In other words, what you 'look for'/'expect to see in the world'.

Connections between braincells get stronger with use, and the more you use your 'the world is a dark place'-braincell network, the easier it's activated. Bad news for example activate and therefore strengthen this network. There is a story that relates to this.

A painter, an architect and a pick-up artist, old friends, walk through a city, up to a mountain. From there, overlooking the city, the architect says: Boy what a beautiful city this is, the architecture and color-play is simply amazing. The painter smilingly nods, while the pick-up artist looks at them strangely. You talk about architecture after we've came across what felt like 15 of the most beautiful women in the world? he said. There were indeed some beautiful women, the painter said, some of which he'd love to paint someday. Dazzled, the architect said: I saw none of them. Obviously, every one saw exactly that which he had trained his brain to see the most.

Drama queens are drama queens because they focus on drama all day long. Happy people are happy because they focus on what makes them happy.

What you focus on expands, and as Taxi drivers have been found to have bigger, stronger connected inner-map-areas, and pianists bigger, stronger hand-motoric-areas in their brain, that's not just a cute saying.

To break free from your current reality, you must force yourself to focus on what you want to see in the world 2-3 times a day and for 21 days in a row. 21 days is the time it takes the brain to form a new filter or in other words: habit.
reckt

StealthFan

  • Swings Both Ways
  • Senior Member
The effects of your new 'filter', if you stop strengthening it actively after the 21 days, will last about 6 months. You can do this with things that made you happy in the last 24 hours to increase your 'automatic happiness supply' or with issues regarding your life for example.

To build these filters, you can simply use questions to direct your focus on the parts of your brain you want to grow/get stronger/become more dominant in how you view the world. (In other words, the part of your brain you want to be more easily activated whenever information enters your brain. Weird shit, I know, but stay with me.)

Some good focus directing questions:
-What are 3 things/situations/incidents that made me happy in the past 24 hours?
-What are 3 reasons why even if the world is fucked up, I can still enjoy my life?
-What were 3 things... I think you got it by now

The more you create of these, the better. At some point, I myself had 18 I answered daily.

Do this and you'll be amazed of the new reality you will soon be able to see/enjoy/experience. If you do this, I promise you that it will completely heal the issues you are complaining about right now, without taking any drugs as some obvious trolls ITT suggested.

Seek and you shall find. Not just a cute saying, mate. Do it. Thank me later
reckt

Stealthfan, I can never really tell whether any given post of yours is sincere/trolling/copy-pasted, but I agree with that stuff either way.

I used to think "think positive" was utter bullshit (and I still think so when it comes to "naive implementations" of the idea), but it can work once you realize that you can actually use confirmation bias in your favor. It acts as a filter pretty much in the way you described.

Basically, if you always think about worst cases, you start seeing worst cases everywhere (which is one of the main reasons I'm opposed to gun ownership, but that's another debate for another time).

Edit: No idea if it helps with clinical depression, but for general everyday "shit sucks" stuff.
