The only time I've drank wine on the reg was when one of my local grocery stores had a bin of the tiny fun sized bottles and I'd be able to sneak like 6 or 7 of them out in my pants and jacket pockets. Plus, you could always go chug a few in the bathroom, chuck em in the trash, then replenish before slipping out.

Yeah. I keep looking up these names and so far I wouldn't bother jerking in to any of them. Maybe we are the only ones who like to fantasize about women who are actually attractive.

I bought 1984 a little while ago, I've read some classic books, like To Kill a Mockingbird, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest, but I seriously cannot sit down and read it. The less noise there is the easier I get distracted by small noises, so in order to actually focus on the book I have to generally listen to white noise, then I have to go lie down on a couch because my room is too small for reading, and even then when I actually open the book and start reading I generally lose all my motivation and instead want to start playing Dota 2 again, or whatever other game I happen to be playing at the time.

I love literature, but I hate the medium. What is some good advice for people with relatively short attention spans, or people who can't find the motivation to read?

Read more modern, "light" books that are more accessible, then move on to the classics. If I had to recommend one to start out with, it'd be 11/22/63 by Stephen King. It's really long (1000+ pages) but it's the definition of a page-turner. I think I read it in like 5 days.
Yes, ignore the 300 page book that's full of references you've probably heard many times and is pretty straight forward that you can't seem to read, try this 1000+ page tome based around time travel by Stephen King.

You can't sit down and read it because it's a bad book written for children, OP.

If OP was not punished for his actions, I wouldn't care. If OP illegally downloaded his entire gaming collection, I wouldn't care.

However, it doesn't make sense to support or encourage people complaining that they were punished for knowingly violating the system. That system is in place to help Nintendo make better games. We all want Nintendo to make better games.

That's an interesting question.

I think it could be because reading is the most passive, most abstract art form there is, whereas gaming is the most active, least abstract one. At the same time, books are more like movies or TV than they are like games.

Games are like an amped up version of real life. That's the key thing about them. You are active in them, usually more active than you could possibly be in real life. On top of that, games are the furthest thing from abstract. They are a hyperreality, where you, the player, see and hear everything that happens with perfect clarity.

TV and movies have some of the hyperreality of games, but none of the responsiveness and activeness. They are passive experiences where you let the imagination of the creator wash over you.

Books have the passivity of TV and movies but are completely lacking in any kind of reality that you can see or hear. They are completely abstract, only words, with no images or sounds. Everything happens inside your own mind.

The end result is that getting used to playing games means going from feeling like Superman to feeling like you are deaf and blind. It shouldn't be surprising that it would be difficult to pick up a book after weeks of gaming.

I dunno, man. Remember when the prevailing theory for why 3rd parties won't release games on Nintendo consoles is that Nintendo games were too good, and they didn't want to compete?  :hitler

To clarify, I don't see the term "Gamer" as simple as "One who plays games". A "Gamer" is one who follows the industry and culture. Your mom who plays Candy Crush isn't a gamer. She just plays games. Someone that only plays Madden is not a gamer. Someone that only plays CoD casually is not a gamer. A gamer is one that goes deeper into the culture.

I can't imagine going long periods without reading, let alone entire days. Hell, I'll read while watching television. And I'd read while playing games if I was able to. Actually, I do. During late game turns in Civ or between matches in something like CS/TTT. Or while downloading all ten thousand stupid sound files this server has. Or...

I have to force myself to read most times. Writing doesn't hold my attention well or for very long. Every couple of pages I'll catch myself having no idea what I just read. I have this problem with TV and Movies too though. The tiniest incongruities or a mere hint of bad acting pulls me out of the moment. Meanwhile, games grab my attention effortlessly. And I get so easily engrossed to the point where I can't play horror games. :shaq2

Plays don't works for me at all. We went to a production of Schiller's Love and Intrigue once as part of German class and good lord could I not get out of there soon enough. The guy who played Ferdinand ran into a wall because confusion or something and they had Luise (?) descend onto the stage from one of those illuminated staircases you see in gameshows.

Technically, he isn't wrong. Gaming is active entertainment while reading/watching books/movies is a passive-"active" experience. It is kinda hard to get the motivation to go back to "passive" entertainment if you're used to "being the hero" and the like.

Die Rauber would have been better for your class to see imo, Rufus.

Last play I had a chance to see was a uni department production of part 1 of Angels in America, which I have to say I was kind of disappointed with in a Brechtian sense as Tony Kushner is considered like the Brecht disciple in America and it made me catch feels while also alienating me. #thedualities

It also had nude college age men on stage. :phil
