I'll admit that all of the fervour surrounding TLoU made me not want to play Naughty Dog games for years. I've got people pushing me to play Uncharted 2, but I've put it pretty low on my list of priorities because I'm mostly afraid that I won't like it. I haven't liked a lot of games that seem to be praised a lot lately, so I guess that's my odd irrational fear. Or maybe I'm growing out of bigger games, so who knows.
I gave an unplayed copy of TLoU to someone else to get another game instead, so I probably won't be playing that game for years. I don't really want to play it since I feel like I know everything about it. It's similar for a lot of games that get a ton of buzz on social media or a lot of news threads on GAF. I don't feel inclined to play those games right away. It's why I've stopped paying so much attention to game news. I've realized that it makes the event of playing the game boring for me.
Those games were, and are still, difficult to get away from with respect to opinions, articles, and forum posts waxing poetic about them. I generally like playing a game and feel like I have a more balanced impression of it whenever I play an import copy of a game or whenever I play it without looking at a thread or forum specifically-tailored for the game. So when there are reams and reams of posts, articles, and forum threads about a game, I feel like my opinion might shift a little because I'm learning about the game from other people too much instead of trying to evaluate it on my own. Everyone's told me how AMAZING TLoU is and talked about the gameplay, the characters, the feelings evoked based on the game's themes, why it's so great, for example. Thus there isn't much inclination to play it on my part.
Same thing's happened with Smash Bros, Hyrule Warriors, Destiny, etc. very recently.
And Rahxephon, I'd agree with maybe taking a break from forums for a bit. I kinda know how that feels since I almost started snapping at a lot of people instead of behaving rationally, so I started taking breaks and benefited from them. That and not taking everything that everyone says on games forums seriously.
