Do you honestly think the topic discussed in that thread posted, nerd culture, does not tell you spend your money on an endless supply of gadgets and toys? We can use Steam sales as a beautiful example of delicious brain dead capitalism. People wait for weeks just to get their hands on the latest Steam sale. They'll spend tons and tons of money on a shit ton of games while their Steam libraries fill up and end up playing not even half of those titles. Why are they buying them even if they know they won't play them? Because it's on sale and They have money to burn. Why do they need it? Do they need it? No. Please wait for the countdown to get to zero for the next sale!
It gets to a point where people buy just to buy. You really believe segments of the population, especially within niche hobbies do not have an emphasis on indiscriminate purchases?
It's okay that you don't mind it or don't believe it's harmful but to pretend like - especially with games - there isn't a pre-existing condition in the general hobby to buy, buy, buy I don't know what to tell you.
