Moving away from acceptance of homosexuality, I find this eerily similar to the irrational fears of the ebola outbreak and whether forced quarantines were necessary for healthcare workers returning from West Africa.

The bans been there since... 1970? 1980 at least when the AIDS panic was there. Like I said, I don't have a big deal. It's more a "safety net" that can be pretty much bypassed by anyone that wants to lie. The bigger issue is they don't do enough testing on the donated blood to make it 100% safe last I checked.

Absolutely right.
Right now they're probably thinking there's a very small risk but if there's no pressing reason to undertake the risk, well even a minimal risk is 100% more risk than no risk. So I bet that's their reasoning.

But the conspiracy theorist in me thinks its that the blood industry doesn't want to glut the market with more blood

Uhh..they do test for HIV both 1 and 2 and have for quite a while, on every blood donation. But HIV can be dormant for several months before appearing in the blood unlike other diseases.
