How can you call Obsidian games jank/lacking in execution when The Elder Scrolls has some of the worst combat for a RPG series? Its been body mashing and magic spamming for over 14 years. Shit, regarding Bioware, Mass Effect 1 was on some 2002 shit when it comes to controls and movement. Jade Empire is another Bioware stinker.

Skyrim was a gigantic production with millions of dollars poured into development, and the fucking thing didn't work on the PS3. The Fallout games also end up borderline broken the more you save and put time into the games on the PS3.

Jade Empire is forgettable as hell. Here's what I remember:

You fight elephants and giant animals via fist fighting in a dream world.
You can turn into a elephant and fight dudes.
You kill a bad guy and then he becomes a sun god or something.
You kill the sun god.
The end?

For a game revolving around martial arts, it felt like dummies constantly smacking and slapping each other to death.

all those Bioware + Bethesda games are fun, but they are all also janky as fuck and unreliable, performance-wise.  They literally get to a point in development where it's "good enough, dude...we'll deal with the ps3 issues when people start complaining, or not" and ship it.

Obsidian's prob is that they've been stuck telling the stories they want to tell with other peoples' intellectual property. I won't argue KOTOR 2's writing or post out of context screen shots, but the story told in that game is not a Star Wars story. The fuck I want to play a Star Wars narrative game for?

Nu-Vegas was a similar problem, albeit less odious considering it was an attempt to revert Bethesda's reboot.

Dungeon Siege didn't have this problem at all because no one even remember the lore in 1 and 2.

I agree with both of you.

Bioware and Bethesda make fun games (didn't like Skyrim at all though), but they're just as rough as any other non AAA RPG series. Obsidian's best work is indeed them jumping on and working around a existing franchise or IP.

Alpha Protocol is one of their original IPs, and while its fun, as a stealth game its really bland gameplay wise.

Jade Empire is forgettable, he's right on the money there. (Would Himu-chan stan for it, or does the fake Chinese everything upset her?)

Alpha Protocol on the other hand... The PC version at least is not nearly as buggy as people make it sound. It has bigger problems in the gameplay department (much like the original Mass Effect), but that can be obviated by going stealth+pistols (chain shot specifically), which is very overpowered. It has the best reactive and non-linear story telling in recent memory though. In that regard it absolutely shits on Mass Effect and anything else Bioware ever did.

I want a non-standard fantasy world (Elsweyr or Black Marsh pls, or both?) with the quest design from Oblivion. Morrowind quests blew, but the world was great. Oblivion world was bleh, but the quests were great. Skyrim had the best combat and a pretty, but also kind of bleh landscape with bleh quests.

Never played a Bethesda game near launch, always bought the collections, when the most egregrious jank is fixed one way or another. :win

I heard a Sega exec is actually to blame for the dice-roll shooting in it. Don't know if that's true though.

They did extend development for six months to do more QA. Some Sega guy said that on the 1UP flaghship podcast at the time.

As many issues as Square games have had quality-wise, even their jankiest game recently (Lightning Returns) had very few bugs if at all and aside from NPCs acting stupid or falling over a lot, it ran pretty well. Bethesda has easily the worst track record of those companies in releasing completely fucked games.

The Wii U has been getting great software, so why can't the PS4/Xbone? Just disappointment after disappointment. Though Bloodborne is out soon.

I think the volatility of the industry and the fact that so many development studios closed during and after the PS360Wii era has prevented any future generations of hardware from receiving the game library that, say, the PS2 had. The PS2 has literally every genre on the planet represented and most of the top representations of each genre as well. Smaller game studios could release niche titles and find success, or even release them at all, because the PS2 was easy to work with and build from and many publishers at the time were willing to take risks.

You don't have that much anymore, because every game is AAA and takes an Order 1886 amount of time to beat.

I think third party devs/publishers realized a long time ago that the expanded videogame audience treat games like TV shows or movies. You buy something familiar every year or every other year, you beat it, move on, or you play multiplayer with friends/randoms until the next shiny and new sequel comes out, move on.

I have no qualms with this except that development cost has gone up significantly each gen, so the biggest players and those with not much to lose on a grand scale (indie devs) are the only players left in the development game.

This is true on consoles, on PC the middle tier or B tier development is still chugging along just fine.

Can we please immediately implement all of these things so I can stop having to read about her and this goddamn struggle? Christ. Why is this shit on deadspin anyway?

Get your 15 minutes of fame off another woman's struggle brehs.

A good start would be to stop reading kotaku.

I was reading deadspin.com goddamnit.
YMMV

Yeah. I'm not sure I even understand the point of threads like that.

Hey guys. I really really like something. Let me tell you how much I like this thing so much that I'm going to make a silly title to show you how much I like that thing.

Now shower me with praise.

go back and play morrowind on the xbox and edit your post. shit was :paul

No it wasn't. It was basically the base PC version without mods. Even then you could mod the X-box version with various binaries of "mods" on PC IIRC. I played the vanilla AND Game of the Year edition on X-box and beat the main story no problem outside of the size-file bloat that is the same shit the PS3 version had.

Is the PC version better? Yes, definitely. But Beth's console ports have gone downhill since the original Morrowind X-box release.

Is that 8 point plan thing Anita's? I can't support anything smaller than 5 year plans.

I played Skyrim on the 360 and didn't have any problems with it.
Now play it on PS3 at launch. Night and fucking day.
