My current gf tends to be a bit more needy than most of the girls I have dated though (not to mention I am her first long term relationship). As a moderator, part of my job is to stop people from being prejudiced against others. It's part of the ToS. I started by asking people not to be prejudiced, and say things like "This guy looks just like the white redneck I expected" a statement that wasn't made explicitly but was clearly implied by several posters.

If people had just backed down, this wouldn't have been a derail -- it would have been a pretty straightforward moderator intervention.

Instead, people doubled down, saying it's okay to be prejudiced in this case, insisting this is different, and so forth. I tried to give people a chance to back down, but many didn't. It is part of my job as a moderator to enforce the rules against prejudice attitudes, even when the prejudice is directed at people I don't personally like.

And with that said, this cop sounds like a real piece of shit. I believe that's the first time I've used that word on GAF. I should look in to that.

Budget comparisons can only get so far, especially over such a long period of time. When they did Shenmue the budget may have grown for specific circumstances or may add all expenses for prototypes, etc... 10 millions seems a bit short though, judging by the little we know of current standards in the industry for games with a lot of assets.

Most of Shenmue budget was switching systems and making new engine. Also, they did things that were revolutionary then and inexperienced as they had no reference point. Unreal 4 streamlines the development process and simplifies things that they handcrafted in 1999. Further, open world game development is now more refined and there are now more reference points to fall back on. Finally, Witcher 3 had a budget of 15 million and it had large scale. You are comparing Shenmue III, a game that will have a smaller intimate environment, to something like GTA. It isn't comparable. 10 million combined with investor funds is more than enough in today's development for a game like Shenmue.

GTAV cost 200 million. It's a vast open world game. Shenmue isn't about vastness do anything sandboxing.

And it switches systems because Dreamcast. It had better power, Saturn was dead or dying so they said fuck it.
