Yeah, the jumps in quality are amazing. They go from looking like segmented action figures to mannequins to something resembling actual human beings.

The sad part when you look at old game intros from the 90's is that most of these companies don't even exist anymore.

Like Takara, the publisher for BAT3, went defunct wayyyy back in 2006. I had to look up to see if Tamsoft still makes games and apparently they make the Oneechanbara line of games, which I never knew before today! :lol

Not 3d or fmv or 32 bit to be exact, but I wanna talk about intros in general for a sec. I feel like they are now a lost art in games. I'm not talking about what starts when you start the game, I'm talking about an intro that starts immediately after booting the game up and the dev/pub credits pop up. Something to pull you in and make you go,"fuck ya, I'm pumped for this shit"

Samples of this in action:

To be fair, the whole intro before start screen thing was always more of a Japanese thing, but I always felt they enhanced the game for some reason, if it was good, of course.

Intro's like 5 seconds long but never failed to get me pumped.

Also totally off-topic, but I wonder if those sega / snes emulators have decent netplay nowdays.

Intros and attract screens are a lost art.  I love to leave PS2 and PS1 games just running in the background as they play thier videos. Editing videos is an art in itself and a lot of these games use to have nicely edited videos that were just kind of there for the heck of it.

Thats why I have an over 12 hour video(and growing) compilation of this kind of stuff.

I think intro scenes changed because videogames are far less a solitary experience in a dark bedroom these days. The console is out in the living room and connected to the internet. Do you want to load up that epic intro and have "Your Friend Bong_Jeremy95 has signed on." pop up along with about three other pop-ups, a game update, and yada yada.

You also have cinematics more often throughout the game, so the intro cinematic isn't that special an ordeal anymore.

That reasoning doesn't make sense to me. For one, most intros are skipped after the first watch. But sometimes a great intro draws you in and you watch it every time you load the game up. Those are rare, but awesome. Games aren't the solitary experiences they used to be, but there are still lots of solitary experiences.

Also, there have been numerous games with classic intros that take place in story based games, especially RPGs.

GTAIV and V didn't have a customary, traditional intro btw.

The hallmark of a great rpg is one that gets you pumped every time you load that damn game up.

This is hot poop right here

Back when I was at 17-Bit I made this as a tribute to 32 bit intros, I remember stealing the "PRETTY GIRL IN CHERRY BLOSSOM WOODS" from uhhh pretty much everything.

Ironically I don't think this plays on boot, you have to idle at the main screen for 30 seconds. It also doesn't exist in the mobile versions because of download size :(
