:lol I'm not knocking the system, just saying my general feeling. I did not expect to miss sleep mode but now I appreciate it a lot on modern systems. It's a fact of the system like having to use four AA batteries, except I realized the AA battery aspect beforehand.

To this day I don't understand why they didn't remake Metroid II in the face of how well received Zero Mission was...

Because Zero Mission was well-received in the "people say nice things about it" way rather than the "many people bought this" way, unfortunately.
Well that's a damn shame. :gloomy

I had the first two Final Fantasy Legends. The first one, damn, talk about primitive. The second one kicked my ass toward the Apollo/Odin battles. Even the random battles stomped you hard. I always remembered it as hard game.

Link's Awakening :lawd
Gauntlet :lawd

I'm trying to remember the name of one of my favorite GB games. It was like a real time chess game where you fought over a grid of a map, with knights/queen/ranger/wizard/etc. You could move from grid to grid until you found an opponent, at which point you'd fight. And each grid area had various power ups and terrain you could exploit.

Those are some pretty good games. I don't think I could fuck with an OG Gameboy anymore though, I'd have to have at least a Pocket or a Color. I bet you already have one of those, tho.

Made a complete NES library disc for dreamcast and my buddy and I would play Archon for hours. My favorite was when I would beat his superior strategy by being super cheap during the battles

nope just found it, fuck yes: Kingdom Crusade.

Very fun game, especially on hard mode. I had a friend who also had the game, and multiplayer was even more fun.

I had a micro for a while then got rid of it. The screen is just too small. Honestly, you're better off getting a SP+.

As for flash carts, the only one left in production is the EZ Flash IV. Realhotstuff.com has always been good.
If you have a DS flash card, you can buy a 3-in-1 expansion pack for the GBA slot of the DS and it will work the same as a GBA standalone flash cart.

Crazy that I made this thread to celebrate the GB's 25th birthday (going by the US launch), and it just recently hit 30 in Japan. Crazy.

Anyways, if anyone is interested in retro game creation / demaking, here's a project that piqued my interest:

https://www.gbstudio.dev

It's a visual editor like Contstruct / RPG Maker, but for GameBoy ROMs -- ones you can write to a cart and play on real hardware. 🤩

Planning on doing something with it... If I actually stick to this project I'll post about it soon, trying to make a small pet simulator but I'm not sure how well a real-time clock would go with actual hardware. :thinking Might have to get creative with the design.

Nice bump, yesterday I received my replacement black shell for my original Gameboy Classic which I got as a gift when I was 7 or 8.

I was weary, but having seen some pictures online I could not refuse to try it. My old case was fucked, no more screen protector, no battery cover and very yellow due to sun exposure and perhaps smoking.

Replaced it with this custom shell, and I'm interested in installing a backlight mod at a later date.

Today, because I really liked doing this, I ordered about 6 different Game Boys ( from classic, pocket, color and SP ) for about 150 euro's and I will try to mod those as well.

Nice! Been having an urge to buy some Pockets lately; I still think it's the best looking model.

If I tackle a custom project it's going to be all-white everything. Might call it Ghost like Jon Snow's direwolf lol.

Yeah today I went on a crazy splurge and bought 150 euro's worth of second hand gameboys off the net

1x Gameboy SP, 1x Gameboy Classic, 2x Gameboy Color and 1x Gameboy Pocket

My plan is to mod all of these, replace the shells and perhaps even install backlights into them.

I'd love to get this shell for the pocket

Also, used to play this game to death, it was very hard.

It also has parallax scrolling backgrounds!

Listen, if I want to play Tetris on the go I don't want to start from square 1 every single time, especially since this version doesn't even have up-to-drop so the early game is slow as molasses.

This is the only way I know how to play Tetris. You start from square one each go brotha

I hope you understand now how wrong you were

That said, GB Tetris is still pretty low on my list of favorite Tetrises.

Tetris DS is still king. Though I really want to try Tetris Effect.

I looked into how they did this a while back and they're just manually programmed sprites. :o Same for Ninja Gaiden's backgrounds.

FYI I plan to buy this $50 cart writer soon: https://bennvenn.myshopify.com/collections/game-cart-to-pc-interface/products/reader-writer-gen2?variant=19222674951

Basically it lets you write to those $3-5 Chinese bootleg carts on Alibaba. :o I could theoretically self-publish my own physical Game Boy game on the extreme cheap. :rejoice

To that end, it's been a bitch finding a service that can print GB game boxes, figure if it comes to it I'll print my own and use a straight edge or something... There's hard-plastic GB box vendors (for like collectors) but nobody serving the weirdos like me who want to make a shitty cardboard box from the 90s. :lol

GB Zero would be more bork's style.

I appreciate the system for its original hardware (especially the sound it produces), so a GameBoy Pi clone isn't really my thing. I can understand the appeal though. It's neat it can play original carts though.

I have zero experience soldering anything.. But I want/must start modding Gameboys and putting in AGS101 screens etc.. I want to start modding these beautiful Pockets and GBA's and preferably the OG classics as well.

Probably going to be a slightly expensive venture, as I dont know what kind of screens I should buy and if I'm safe buying from Aliexpress. I think BennVenn himself said that the store Gamers Zone on Ali is what he uses.

Would prefer some easy drop in backlights but if those run me three times the price of a single Pocket then I dont think it's worth it.

This might be a costly venture, but seeing those 3/4 dollar Gameboys on Ebay has me interested. Id love to purchase those, but are they region free? Is it even worth it to disassemble and try to fix?

Like I said I have 0 soldering experience, I dont even have a soldering iron or a place to use that stuff really. Still want to get into it tho...

Game Boy is totally region free. :) 3DS is the only Nintendo handheld with that mark against it.

I also have zero soldering experience so I'm interested in seeing how you do. :lol

That one is uglier, has static sound issues and doesnt sport the original Gameboy logo.

The price is better but only a 320x240 screen too. Not worth it imo. Also doesnt play Snes games all that well.

Saw these custom ones but if u want a Pi3 inside the costs are pretty high.

If I wanted to play SNES games on a handheld, I'd use any number of better mobile devices to do that.  Or just get a regular Retropie and slap it in a portable case with screen.  You can find cheaper stuff elsewhere.

Or just get a GPD XD or WIN and be done with it all.  :doge

I just saw that someone has put two Gameboy Light's on sale near me, boxed and all original japanese version O_O

I made two bids 1 for 100 euro with a bit of a messed up box, and 130 for a great condition box.

I wish I can get those two.. I will spend all my money I don't care lol!

Also I bought a soldering iron package from LightintheBox  :doge

Reshelled one of the GBA SP's I had.. from silver to black and put a red famicon screen on it

Sadly there are a few dust particles on the screen :( already had a hair on it,, had to reopen it and clean the screen but as you can see there is still some dust. Still pretty proud of how well it went!
