Ome project didnt go that well, the DMG :(

But yesterday I was anxious to continue modding. So I started on the GBA which I reshelled onto a Golden Pikachu Edition GBA.. I made the adjustments to the shell and then inserted the new screen. I screwed the motherboard back on, but one of the screws got messed up and lost the indentations? Either way I continued on since the mobo was already sitting tight on the shell.

Next up was soldering a very tiny wire, to a very tiny leg on the motherboard. Having never soldered anything before, this made me anxious. I watched a few tutorials and tried it myself.

Succes! Aside from a bit of dust that crept in behind the glass screen protector, and not habing positioned the screen perfectly.. but still the result was amazing!

sorry for the horrible pics, it looks way better in real life

Not as impressive as the first one going to the original Gameboy.

Also it might be Youtube compression, but this doesn't look as good as the Game.com port.

Today I put this together with a chinese drop in kit from aliexpress which requires basically zero modification to your gbc shell or any soldering, so if you want to backlight your gbc and have no skills it's a fun way to start modding.

Finally took the plunge and backlighted my reshelled Pocket.

Was a bit scary because of removing the film from behind the pocket screen as Id already killed a DMG screen which has the same polarising film

Im pretty happy with the result

You got a link for this? there's a few of them.

edit: aw crap

Quote
"Wow! That sounds awesome! But wait, there's got to be a catch, right?" you may find yourself saying. Well, yes, there is indeed a catch. Like the McWill kit, this kit runs the LCD at 60 FPS despite the GBC running at ~59.7 FPS. This means that every few MS the LCD needs to duplicate a frame to allow the GBC to catch up. This results in some noticeable judder, especially on any games that include smooth, constant movement, much like in any of the Pokemon titles. The McWill mod deals with this by introducing some occasional tearing, this kit straight up drops a frame or two to deal with the framerate mismatch. This framedropping occurs significantly more often on this kit than the tearing on the McWill kit.

Wow that's not it buddy I did not notice any screen tearing in my testing

Buy this one man

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33040321760.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27424c4dT4DCZj

Get the second option for just the screen kit itself. I dunno why they added the option for a GBC Mobo + mirror? Don't even know what that mirror does. Maybe it's just a lens.

Sold that GBC for 100 euro's btw. Probably lost little bit of money on it but I wasn't gonna use it.

Really cool GB Studio adventure game, playable right in your browser: Soul Void

Basically a walking simulator with horror trappings and more than a little helping of Undertale influence, but it's a solid and enjoyable 1-2 hour experience and has some great spritework (no music tho.)

Extremely excited by GB Studio's spread.

Run Python code on a GameBoy using a special cart. Insane.

Another insane thing I found: a Game Boy cart that makes your Game Boy a controller for modern systems :mindblown

https://www.tindie.com/products/insidegadgets/wireless-gameboy-controller-device/

I contacted the maker if the radio (unfortunately RF and not Bluetooth, but that might need its own battery, even LE) was programmable by the ROM on the cart (think the wireless adapters for FireRed/LeafGreen), and was told they can be. :o

spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's pretty out there but if someone can build a Wi-Fi radio into a cart, you could theoretically do a Stadia situation where it's just a PC streaming video of a game to the GB's screen, and transmitting the button presses back to the PC. Granted, it'd be downscaled to four tones and 160x144 resolution, but still... :thinking

What is it?

Game Boy cart flasher (reader/writer.) Tetris is plugged in and you can see the mini USB port on the bottom, next to the lights.

Now I just need to make a game with https://gbstudio.dev and plop it on the correct type of cartridge.

Easier said than done. :shaq2

i think the second game was the one i've played. whichever it was was slow and short but a decently fun side scroller. konami had some good stuff on GB. i remember liking the tiny toons game a lot too.

The funniest part to me about that BODYGUARD is the description talking about what it protects the Game Boy from.

Except all the parts you might actually want to protect from "dirt, scratches, etc." like the screen and the cartridge port, etc.

Plus the original Game Boy is built like a freakin' brick, there's probably a good height you can drop them from and not damage them.

Not sure if this is actually from a Gameboy game but is in the style either way and thought it was interesting. A beach waves animation motion interpolated at 60fps using a new depth-aware neural network implementation that some have been messing around with for 2D animations.

See also the project's video overview for intended live action video which is quite impressive over other methods.

I've heard of this before and am surprised it's not more common, it's far far far better than the fake 60fps modes on most shipping TVs.

Didn't think of applying it to low-FPS Game Boy animations... the effect is a little unnatural tbh. And yeah, I think it would be impossible to do something like this on actual hardware.
