Also, confirmed the Debian version of GB Studio v1.2.0 installs and can run the emulator on Chrome OS now! Probably has to be x86-64 like my Pixelbook, though (i.e. probably can't run on ARM Chromebooks, but I can't say for sure.) Earlier versions could only be installed after jumping through hoops, and even then the emulator crashed the program (there were a lot of crashes in fact...) 1.2 is really stable on my primary operating system and I'm super excited. :D

Also, GB Studio's author just released a Christmas-based version of the starter demo! https://chrismaltby.itch.io/merry-sample-project

This is perfect for a project I'm working on. :)

Ugh there's always some problem... Apparently, official cartridges and clone cartridges use two different screw positions. Which is great for determining fakes (though it's usually easy anyways), but less good for when you want to combine an official-mold cartridge (in this case, boxyboy's anodized aluminum one I posted earlier) with a Chinese Pokemon clone cart (as Chinese Game Boy clone games are actually kickass for homebrew since they don't care about turning off the writability of the carts -- it would be like record labels shipping albums on CD-RWs back in the day.)

Official is left, clone is right.

Basically they're incompatible and I need to cough up about $30 extra per cartridge for a flash cart instead, as only flash carts are both:

1. newly manufactured and writable
2. conforming to the official screw/pin layout

But flash carts are $30-40 instead of $5-10 like clone carts...

Now, if I didn't care about using these particular cartridge shells (they're metal!) it'd be easy to just slap a different sticker on the clone cart.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Lots of "I want to start publishing Game Boy games, including other indie devs" energy right now 👀

Someone's selling an official Nintendo dev/flash cart on eBay and I want it so bad but don't have the money. :rkelly

One thing tho:

Quote
Cartridge has mary kate & ashley game on it.

:lol

More info on such carts here: https://devkits.handheldmuseum.com/GB_EPROM_FlashCarts.htm

Quote
Getting more advanced here, this is a 32M Flash Cartridge. You would plug the cart into a special cartridge programmer, and it would just upload the game to the flash chip. These also have a little on-board RAM so you could test game saves and such.

After reading approximately a dozen articles, and watching the above video a handful of times, I now have a super rough idea of how Game Boy emulators function.

The way I think of it: when you read a .gb ROM file, it's basically a list of instructions at specified points of memory. To emulate the hardware, you read and carry out each instruction in sequence, and you can read and write things into "memory" (although I'm still coming to terms with all the limits that entails.) Each instruction is one from a list of operations the CPU supports. I will say writing to the screen is easier to grok than expected coming from modern programming, although there's also a bunch of limits on what you can do there because of the modest hardware.

I deign to implement my own emulator in JavaScript pretty soon. :) Half for fun, half to learn, and 1% to maybe make an emulator that eventually becomes not-garbage at audio (coincides with my interest in LSDJ.)

It's pretty amazing we're in a time where people are knocking out cool little games for dev jams, let alone actual GB ROMs (and playable in browser). Came across Polyducks' Jabberwocky made in three days for a Gameboy jam, while browsing itch.io. Had seen their prior superb PETSCII and pixel art before but at that point hadn't come across their released games.

And it's only going to get better! I'm so fucking excited. As this thread shows I've been excited about GB stuff for a while but it only feels like just recently has the "scene" turned a corner, so to speak. Like, a lot of this stuff has been quietly growing since the GBA/DS days (gbatemp.net), but now it's really entering the public sphere and more and more people are globbing on. The acceleration on cool GB shit is phenomenal.

Some dude recently made a business card that runs (command line) Linux. Wouldn't be crazy to see a GB cart version in a year or two.

Between GB Studio bringing RPG Maker simplicity to real GB ROMs (playable in the browser both because of how advanced PCs have become and how old the GB is), FGPAs taking off (and Analogue taking advantage with the Pocket), Chinese clone carts vastly lowering the price of running homebrew on real hardware, and the entire stable of "scene" hackers offering genuinely cool shit to buy like aluminum carts, USB-C/MIDI mods, new types of screens and shells, etc. etc. etc... it's so fucking exciting. :D

Complete F-Zero fangame made in GB Studio! Apparently you play as Captain Falcon before the story of the other games, and go around a city punching people.

Yeah well there are already a bunch of them on Ebay.. I might be able to sell it on there but I didn't quite like how people can just say they don't want your item in the end and you have to pay them back.

I am able to sell it for 85 euro's, but I feel like that might be too low. I just want to buy another GBA + IPS V2 screen, because I fucked my own one up.

No need, buy a IPS display and hook it up. No soldering required, and super easy to install. Will set you back about 45 dollars, but well worth it. Will post pics soon.

I didn't even solder that IPS display and it's already miles ahead of the old AGS-101 mods.

Holy smokes, putting in the new GBA IPS V2 Display from Funnyplaying was extremely easy. No soldering required, and the brightness is already way better than the old ags 101 mods.

You can use soldering to get 10 brightness levels, but I opted not to as it was late and I thought the default brightness was good enough.

GBA games were amazing.

For a while I only used my DS to play GBA games such as Metroid Zero Mission and Advance Wars.
I think Advance Wars 2 was my most played GBA game and I never got an SP.

Because the Nintendo Seal of Quality was still a thing and the DS/Wii shovelware wave hadn't cursed the software line-up yet you could pick up nearly any cheap random game and it was damn good,
Megaman Battle Network, Robotech, Medabots RPG just to name a few  :lawd

:drudge :drudge :drudge POCKET MEGATON

Quote
Make your own games for Pocket.

We partnered with GB Studio so you can bring your game ideas to reality with zero programming knowledge needed.

GB Studio is a quick and easy to use drag and drop retro game creator for your favorite handheld video game system. It allows you to generate proprietary .pocket files with GB Studio and run them off your SD card.

:gladbron :rejoice

Developing your own GB games on hardware will be as easy as debugging modern phone apps. :lawd

GB Studio was already "supported" since it can make normal GB ROMs, but the fact they're partnering to get deep OS-level integration (because this thing does have a pretty advanced BIOS) is great. Less hot is the "proprietary .pocket files" part, but perhaps this will let GB Studio create games that access more of the FGPA than just the GB part... Interesting to think about, and very exciting.

Probably my favorite of the 6 GBA/DS CV games... the challenge level hearkens back to the pre-SOTN CV games (i.e. it's not sleepwalking through rectangular rooms like some of the other GBA/DS games), and some of the optional areas near the end of the game are quite devious.

So much better than the Game Gear. Kids called me nuts for preferring Game Boy over Game Gear despite having a Game Gear at the time but not a GB.  Wario Land :rejoice Donkey Kong Land :rejoice Pokemon Blue :rejoice WarioWare :rejoice Aria of Sorrow :rejoice

I agree with you, but to be fair, Wario Land and DKL are the only games that came out during the Game Gear's lifespan- Pokemon was a few years later and WarioWare and AoS were on a different platform.

The Game Gear did have some pretty solid games, but just didn't have the third party support that Nintendo snapped up during the time.

But then in '96 the Nomad came out and holy shit portable Genesis was awesome.
