Don't think there's a thread for spirits here. Just craft beer and wine. :fabulous

------------------------------------

I had Pravda vodka last night at a divey-ass dive bar and had to yell Pravda really loud when I ordered it.

It was definitely not the truth. :beli

whisky or gin, whisky: whatever half decent Scotch the shop owner recommends, local liquor stores have some pretty dedicated alchys that've never done me wrong for recommendations. not fussy about blended, single grain, single malt etc. gin: either beefeater or if feeling a little fancy tanqueray, or really fancy hendricks.

at a cocktail bar depending on my state negroni, sazerac or old fashioned. if im feeling camp or annoying a whisky sour. when i start feeling seedy gin and sodas.

at regular bars i drink beer, when i start feeling seedy gin and soda (or just soda in a short glass w/ ice so it seems im drinking  :P ).

I can drink it neat all the way down to like $20-24 dollar bottles. Once you dip below that 20 limit you enter into "tastes and smells like freshly cut grass" territory.

Liquor story.

I shared about 1/2 a bottle of Jhonny Walker Blue with an asian customer. He went from this  :) to this at the end of the night  :maf

I apparently was the last guy in the world to learn that asians really don't do liquor well. Anyway the next day I went to his house and his wife let me in and he looked exactly like this

:dead

This is your life lesson of the day, do not share good scotch with Asians. K thx.

If you're not picky about specifics, I have a story like this involving gin and Thanksgiving.

It ends with me eating all the rolls at the table to stave off yakking, yakking during dinner anyway (in the bathroom at least), and passing out at the dining room table with my hand in the gravy.

I also may have ranted belligerently for several hours beforehand.

On a more upscale note, I opted for a bottle of absinthe that only cost 50 clams.

Sadly it doesn't have a green hue, but at least it doesn't have an artificial green hue.

Knickerbocker at the BevMo asked me if I had the tools of the trade already and I wanted to respond truthfully and say I'd be using a fork instead of an absinthe spoon (I got this protip from the Wormwood Society website :mynicca) and whatever clean glass I had available when I got home tonight instead of an absinthe glass but instead I just said I had all the absinthiana I needed already. I'm already buying spirits when my schedule permits (i.e. late morning on a weekday), I don't need to add insult to injury. :heh

I think I bought a bottle of the Kroger label (Prestige?) whiskey once.

Some depths were not meant to be plunged to.

e: I should add to this that I drank Prestige vodka and gin on the reg. I only got into gin because Prestige gin was $1 cheaper for a fifth.

I've been doing gin and tonics more because I don't care too much for the gin aftertaste so it's way easier for me to chill and watch myself on it when I'm out.

that's a good thing, dude.

To be honest all my eastern european friends are like you. Niccas can drink an entire fifth and still be a solid 5 or 6 drunk.

Well it depends on time we're talking here. A fifth over the space of 3-5 hours of drinking? Absolutely a blackout, yeah. A long day drinking sesh? 5-7? fine. would just be a constant 6/10 drunk.

Yeah, many asians genetically do not have the enzyme which allows for alcohol processing, and they'll get severely flushed after only one beer. Half of my wife's family is this way, so they just don't drink at all, and the memories of the Godzilla moments which followed their last time imbibing are enough to ward off any attempts to even offer them social drinks.

I can't believe I'm about to type this.

I got a bottle of La Clandestine today. It's one of the first legal brands of absinthe and its creator used to bootleg it when it was illegal (hence the name I suppose). It's from Neuchatel / Val-de-Travers so it's legit in that regard too.

Recently I was listening to an interview with this hipster breh who makes St. George absinthe in the San Fran Bay Area and he threw shade on La Clandestine for skimping on the anise "to appeal to a mass market." He was like, "I won't name names, but it was one of the first legal brands. :hitler" :dead

After sampling it I have to agree. It needs more anise, which is something no human being should ever write about a liquor. Kubler is so :lawd because it's rich with herbs, this is much more understated. :obama

On an ironic note, if you're looking to dip your toe into absinthe I would probably rec La Clandestine for this reason. (Ignoring the fact that it's fuckexpensive.)

It gets you hella drunk at least. :yeshrug

Can't believe I've fallen down this rabbit hole brehs. :stahp

Next up after I sell an organ or 3: St. George absinthe. It'll be my first vert, hopefully my green fairy is a hottie. :phil

It's pretty improvisational atm (I won't get into the particulars because they're fucking ghetto as hell, even if I got them from the Wormwood Society) so it's better that you can't right now.

One day we will enjoy a bottle of vintage Pernod Fils I spent 4 (or 5) figures on with my antique fountain, glasses and spoons that also probably cost more than a community college education. :uguu

BTW as someone who thinks wine's only purpose in life is to make kalimotxo and contribute to California's economy, it warms my heart to know the French wine industry was a big player in absinthe being made illegal. Fuck wine. :pacspit
