4h commute?

Excuse me but what the actual fuck?

It's normally total of 3 hours, 90 minutes each way. That's not great, but previous to this I was living 500 miles away from my family, for a year and a half. So this is better for me.

500 miles away from family sounds like an amazing job perk

Not in my case. I'm very family-centered, so it wasn't clear why I'd even need to be in Japan if I'm that far away from my family. I could just go back to the USA and make 50% more than my current salary. But I want my family to be here.

Was reading this random dude bitching on Twitter about how broken UE4 is because he couldn't create a pause menu. I said there is no way is this not in the guide and yep there's a whole step by step tutorial to make one, requiring zero code writing, etc. This led to me installing UE4 for the first time since it was in beta and messing around for a while. Managed to turn the FPS demo into a clicker game with different default geometry shapes as enemies that all spawn in the same spot in each other so it looks like garbage.

Also made a giant tower of default prop chairs that I put on top of a pyramid of boxes you can shoot and watch them tumble down each other until the engine automatically culls them because they fell off the "ground" into the void and there's no defined bottom. Yes, I spent time in Unreal Editor recreating Garry's Mod gameplay.

Then I put so many light sources all over the damn place that it said it was going to take an hour to recalculate the lighting so I said fuck that and quit.

So I will be delaying benjipwnsclicker to TBD from 20XX as my vision for the world design requires those light sources. With chair tower DLC exclusive to EGS.

Been many a year since I had been able to do anything like that. I used to be able to make dumb dungeon crawlers in C let alone code up little tools or websites plus the decade of modding, then there were many years where I couldn't do much of anything outside of basic scripts (which still makes you a programming god in poli sci), but now I can make a clicker game just using the UE toolset. And nothing broke except for the part I figured would!

I realized that the light sources probably were not related to the light sources themselves but all the prop foliage I placed everywhere too, it has to calculate how the lighting bounces off of and through those instead of just the flat surfaces. When I made maps back in the day I never had this problem as lighting wasn't that advanced even in Source. :lol

Plus I actually spent a couple hours on it to where the clicker mechanics were working semi-properly. Which is sort of a triumph of starting something randomly and "completing" it. I didn't really intend to "finish it" and make a clicker game necessarily, but I might keep tinkering with it and put stuff on the blog to show how easy it is to use UE these days. Maybe even try to make a more serious attempt at a benjipwnsclicker as a blog feature. I dunno, felt like a triumph when I compiled it and it ran exactly as intended.

I honestly think I might go for applied mathematics because my math grades are all As and I don't want to do upper division CS courses, even though I'm trying to get into software engineering. It's just having any quantitative degree that'll get me past HR, right? Plus that could be a bonus if I wanted to go the machine learning route.

posting this so someone can warn me and say NOOOOOO if my premise is completely wrong. I know for a fact that neither esch nor riotous have relevant degrees...

I'll echo the opinion above. Upper level CS courses are probably both the most fun and most useful.

The situation might be different in the US, but all of my friends who went into machine learning have a PhD.

Proven experience is a good alternative to a degree. A solid portfolio of software can convince employers of your skills.

Also, I'm extremely nervous still, but made the biggest career change of my life today. 😬 Well, I've been "making" the decision over the last week (lining things up, discussing it with family/close friends, trying to calculate every future variation like goddamn Rehoboam) but today was, like, "it."

Probably not the best time to abandon coding and pursue screenwriting but fuck it, if not now when? :) Been barely scraping by for the last year on contracts anyways and extracting payments from one of my clients was so excruciating I think it killed contract-coding entirely for me. And losing my 9-5 in 2018 killed that for me too.

That said, I know screenwriters are still the bitches of the industry and I'm starting on the bottom. But I know I can write, I know I can give notes, and I know I can produce short films. And I know that's a start. :)

Maybe in a year I'll be sucking dick in LA for crack but at least I'll have some scripts I can show for it.

My experience is that it comes down to the HR person and the hiring manager. I've had bosses who wouldn't hire anyone without a degree from a "reputable" school and I've worked places that didn't look twice at the name of the school or degree.

Was really nervous today about sending over my first ever script notes, but the author gave my feedback a perfect rating. :D

I can actually say that doing my stupid one-paragraph movie reviews here has helped develop this skill a little. I felt myself basically going into the same "mode" when writing my notes. "This worked, this didn't, this could be better if X."

Just have to be a bit more careful since with notes, since you know there's one singular individual waiting day and night for your feedback on their possible life's work. Can't say "this part was fucking boring" as much.

His perfect rating and thank you note has really turbocharged my heart. :heartbeat
