Wow, thanks for the kind words guys. :D Hope some people find it useful, I was mostly scratching my own itch when I made it but then decided to go all-out and add logins, views, likes, etc.

hdd died or was dying, couldn't boot into anything, tried to save it

eventually gave up and used it as an excuse to finally move over to using a SSD for Windows, programs and select games (titanfall 2 basically.....okay adventure capitalist and communist and clicker heroes and...)

lol'd at windows 10 installing fresh off a usb drive taking as long as i took a dump...i remember "rolling out" windows 2000 like over a decade ago onto ten machines or something, oh god and 98 was even worse, how did it take so long to load like 50MB onto those machines why were there so many questions what happened to all the nexts to click and restarts to go through

the triumph here is moving over to ssd finally and also getting my main PC back instead of the cobbled together system i was using with my laptop and monitors (tho havin three screens was kinda sweet, typing on my laptop is not, not to mention trying to figure out what it could run since it definitely couldn't pull off titanfall 2...adventure capitalist)

also found out that ubuntu is ditching unity for gnome 3 from here on out, andrex knows what that means so i'm fine with posting it here and it's kind a triumph even tho unity is finally like okay at least on my laptop it has been

Unity probably started getting OK in the last year or two but I really think the whole paradigm (not to mention a e s t h e t i c) were totally off at the most basic level. I contend that Gnome 3, since it first released, has been the best possible desktop paradigm with an unusually high (for Linux) level of polish and design effort.

Ubuntu embracing Gnome 3 is the latest in a series of decisions designed to regain goodwill from the community after 5-8 years of Canonical trying to own the entire stack and compete with Apple, MS and Google. Been a long time coming.

if you're one of those people who likes randomly installing distros either into VMs or on a side machine or whatever, the 17.10 betas are already running with GNOME default they made the switch the day after Shuttleworth's announcement apparently

i was using a live usb of 17.04 to try and rescue the drive and was surprised at how nearly totally unchanged it was from the 16.04 that's running on my laptop, had i known about the switch i would have made the live usb out of that just to futz with it (although...i mean i have seen GNOME 3 for years now but not with a ubuntu logo on it!)

Shuttleworth basically admitted that they were chasing Windows 8/Phone and came to the same conclusions as MS did about that as an interface long term. Though I guess the one Mobile spin is going to keep developing Unity.

The original fight was over stuff GNOME wound up changing anyway IIRC. But like you noted Canonical thought they were going to break through into the mainstream for a year or so there and are now realizing people really mainly just want a more updated/easier debian which is why Mint took off.

I put Manjaro on a VM and played with it for a week or so, it's actually kinda interesting in that it's not so hardset into any of the various spins to where 90% of it is basically identical across distros. Garbage package system though.

I should probably bump the linux thread you made or something rather than rambling about this here. Though I mainly just play with it in VMs everytime there's a BIG RELEASE people are talking about other than my laptops which have been ubuntu since 8.04 because i did it on a whim and then just kept with it so it's different and unity is kinda nice on a laptop using touchpad and garbage like that.

Girlfriend and I have been on a kick making our own ice cream. Pretty simple too, just heavy cream + condensed milk + vanilla and then whip with a mixer for a little bit and then freeze.

I added Oreo cream and crushed up the cookie part to make cookies and cream. Added crushed banana and peanut butter. She made Cinnamon.

My mother's aunt, with whom I'm not directly connected on Facebook, and who does drive-by responses every time I post something critical of Trump, sent me a Friend request on FB yesterday.

As Walrus has attested, my self-righteousness can be a little overwhelming, and I thought, "Oh ho-ho, no, Ma'am. We are not friends."

This morning I had a new friend request waiting from someone else, and I noticed her invitation had been rescinded. It wasn't there. I'm trying to figure out if she actually meant to send the original and realized her error, but realizing their own error is not the province of many Trump supporters.

Had a dream this afternoon that Himu moved in with me. There was all sorts of unclear dreamy stuff, but we had some sort of agreement where she could stay with me as long as she said "yes" to everything I asked/told her to do. It ended up being a mix of like 50 Shades of Grey and The Garbage Pail Kids Movie. I've been listening to too much My Dad Wrote a Porno.

I found a copy of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy vinyl at the used bookstore. It's a re-recording of the first 4 episodes of the radio series, with some cuts/tweaking made by Douglas Adams to tighten it up. (It's arguably the best version of the series) It's not super rare, but I've never seen one in the wild before and H2G2 is basically my favorite media property ever, so finding it made me happy.

Found my wallet after frantically searching for it for a half hour this morning.  I take Ambien for insomnia sometimes, and if I don't go straight to bed things get weird.  When I realized my wallet wasn't in my jeans this morning I panicked and thought I'd gone on some crazy spending spree on Amazon or something, since you generally don't remember wtf you did after you wake up.

Luckily, I found it under the bed and nothing had been bought.  Which is good, because I need to go buy a beard trimmer today and I would have been bummed if I'd spent that money on a fucking unicorn canvas or something.

Today has been a pretty good day so far.

There's a connection between two highways I use on my way to work.  It's an awesome sweeping curve that's fun to ride on, but I usually hit at like 30-40 MPH because people slow to a crawl on it.  No traffic today so I hit that fucker going 75 on my bike and it felt incredible.

I've been getting hit with promotional shit from AMEX for awhile.  I'm not a credit card guy and up until a couple of weeks ago the only thing I had was a Capital One card that I got in like 2011 with a $1k limit.  The wife and I want to start racking up miles/rewards so I decided to apply.  They approved me for a card limit that is, in my opinion, obnoxiously high - like a shocking % of my annual income.  I'm a pay it off every month type of guy so I'll never get close to that limit but it made me feel good that my wife and I have come a long way financially together.

Lastly, I've been hard as a rock this morning - all morning.  I'm not even horny.  I'm just hard as fuck for some reason.  Strange, but pretty cool.

I've had a leg-jiggle nervous tick since like fifth grade that I developed as a result of the torture scene from MGS1. On the last gym class of my sixth grade year I was sitting on the first row of the bleachers waiting for the next round of dodgeball and my crush put her hand on my bouncy ass knee and said "hey you gotta calm down" and I did, but then I had a whole new set of concerns to be nervous about. That's the last one I can remember
