I like Joss Whedon. :( I don't think he's a genius, but I enjoy his work. Is there a normal Joss Whedon fan option? :fbm No? Maybe? :fbm

I'm like the only person I know without a strong opinion on this guy. Firefly was a decent to pretty good tv show but it's not ZOMG AWESOME, Buffy was never something I got into, and the Avengers is a totally competent comic book movie.

I would say I'm a normal whedon fan. I love Angel, I love Firefly/Serenity, I like some bits of Buffy.

Not gonna suck him off across the internet just because he writes decent female characters like most of his fans though.

my beef with avengers is retroactive in that it was fun and disposable pop entertainment but now that it made a zillion dollars all the marvel movies are just quip-generating machines with paper thin baddies and some weird cosmic object as a door prize.

thus now the avengers annoys the shit out of me. can't wait for avengers 2 to switch the mcu into dark mode with super serious faces and shadows.

The Avengers sucks.

Okay, maybe that's a bit harsh. To each their own and all that bullshit, but I don't get the obsession some people have with that shit. Basically fiending for every drip of info for years leading up to what's ultimately just two hours of hallow, mindless entertainment. I guess Avengers is slightly better than most Superhero movies which are p much straight trash.

Top ten favorite episode of a tv show for me easy.

I haven't seen Cabin in the Woods and outside of Buffy being EXTREMELY corny (like Angel, granted but that came later) I don't mind his stuff and actually enjoy it. I enjoyed the hell out of the Avengers, for instance. Like on the par with Ironman 1/3 for me.

I also enjoyed Firefly and Dollhouse (:ufup Fox).

Gotta love Angel too because it took characters you hated in Buffy and made them into your favorites in a very believeable way.

Wes went from the socially awkward smart dude everyone laughed at to cold killer and morally ambiguous anti-hero in like 3 seasons. You watch his progression and by time he goes full John Woo/Chow Yun Fat in s4 you don't even question it.

Cordelia too. They did a great job showing just how insecure and lonely she was in those first two seasons. RIP Doyle, fuck heroin brehs.

Biggest problem with Dollhouse was that the supporting cast was regularly and ruthlessly outshining it's lead around every corner. All the best episodes of Dollhouse are the ones that don't center on Eliza Dushku.

Enver Gjokaj being Topher was the highlight of the series.

It's a shame he didn't expand that concept/series into a comic like Buffy Season 9/10 (11?) for Dark Horse. There's like 5 comics and a mini preview comic he threw in the DVD as an advertisement supplement for the first one and that's it. I think there's a lot they could've done with the other "Dollhouse"s they mentioned in passing in the TV show in other locations (like Dubai? IIRC) with concepts like the Life After Death murder-mystery episode.

But yeah, Dushku was weak in the series. It also doesn't help that the whole "Alpha" meta-plot was weak as well and that was because they were holding onto it in case they could get season 5+. :/

this is my problem. it wasnt really there in any horrible way in Cabin in the Woods, but the rest of his oeuvre makes me want to Karakand myself

It's not that bad in Firefly/Serenity or Angel. Buffy though...especially those early seasons. If you wanted to torture Karakand, pretty sure all you would need to do is tape his eyes open and put on s1 Buffy. I still have a hard time going back to season one buffy.

(Emma Frost/Scott BTW for those not knowing who is in that panel Logan is sitting over)

Which they already did in New X-men/Morrison's run when Jean/Phoenix comes back and finds Scott cheating on her with Emma Frost (who, IMO, should really fucking go away. I don't mind her cattiness at times but her not changing outfits while Scott orders everyone else around is *gag*).

Though, reading Trade vol. 5/6 (Warren Ellis) before this has kinda shown me the "dialogue" issue people have with Whedon. Well that and Warren Ellis has a big hard-on/"Jungle Fever" for Storm, which is fine given he chose her over Whedon (right now, haven't gotten to Vol. 2-4 yet) choosing Kitty Pryde to come on the team.

Angel is one of the GOAT nerd shows. I was cool with Buffy so I checked out Angel, and now all I ever watch is Angel and ignore the shit out of Buffy.

I'm still pissed over Angel getting cancelled and never having a real finale.

I know it's a cliffhanger but I still love the note they end Angel on. Powerful last image.

And as far as the x-men shit goes, that era of asshole cyclops fucking emma frost still the best cyclops though. Way behind it in second place is sanctioning a death squad with x-force cyclops.

I don't see a problem with the guy.

Buffy is pretty good as was Angel. Firefly was an enjoyable show.

Avengers was a fun action movie and nothing more. I mean what else was it supposed to be beyond all those dudes coming together to do stuff? It did that well.

Astonishing X-men was ok if just a little cliche. It had a shitty ending though.

He makes enjoyable entertainment. It's not stupid trash. It's just fun. Whats the problem?

Shhhh... I'm catching up.  :lol I've been jumping around since I jumped on Ellis's Ironman/Extremeis line this past month, read Nextwave (which was alright) and did Vol. 5/6 of Astonishing X-men (Ellis' run) before 1-4 (Whedon's run).  :lol :lol :lol

I do think Emma is a massive bitch though.

Why is Wolverine hunched down like Beast on the edge of the bed

Because before this they dunno where Wolvie is while Beast, Cyke, and Frost introduce the teenagers to Kitty who is going to be the "student liason" and teaching assistant of one class in the Danger Room. Kitty asks where Wolvie is and they're like "uh... around here somewhere" to set up that panel despite the whole Scott cheating thing being old news. :/

give me x-men recommendations. I don't give a fuck about continuity either, as Marvel continuity is LOLNO1CURR.

Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender.

New X-men by Grant Morrison.

X-Statix-Peter Milligan

X-men Age of Apocalypse.

Messiah Complex.

X-Force by Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost.

X-Force by Simon Spurrier

X-men by Mike Carey or at least until Age of X. After that it gets a little shitty with too much Rogue.

Ultimate X-Men-Until probably Kirkman comes on it's fun Hollywood X-men stuff. Then it gets a bit better when it becomes Ultimate Comics:X-men by Brian Wood.

Wolverine By Larry Hanna.

80s X-men are a required taste so I never recommend that. 90s X-men is kind of all over the place and honestly if you read AoA you've read the best thing. It's had to think of anything good about the 90s because where do you even start. Early 90s is riding high on post Chris Claremont plotlines and a lot of it is messy like the Psylocke stuff. Mid 90s has a lot of Onslaught and Operation Zero Tolerance and they aren't regarded as high points. Late 90s is pretty awful as it's full of false starts and then Alan Davis steps in leading to more crap. There's some good stories, but nothing I can pin point as a nice complete read like AoA. I loved the X-Cutioner's Song though as a kid.

Lot's of Claremont 80s stuff shows it's age, but the Australian Era(Uncanny X-men 224 up until X-men 3) I find still holds up and is really engaging. Lots of adventure as so many of the X-men are split up and so many plotlines going so many places. Some of the events of the time like Inferno, Fall of the Mutants, and Mutant Massacre are cool. Though X-Tinction Agenda kind of falls flat.

Early 00's belongs to New X-men with Uncanny putting out shit mostly. I found some of the Warren Ellis produced Counter X stuff like X-Force ok, but 2000-2001 X-men are mostly forgotten. Though this reminds me that X-Man and Generation X were pretty consistently good titles.

There's also Excalibur. Some of that stuff is fun. As was X-Factor when it's the original 5. Though I say that not because I like the original 5, but because some of the actual plotlines like Apocalypse start here and some of it is worthwhile.

I find it hard to recommend X-men because a lot of the storylines are so continuity based. It's not like Batman where I can just say The Dark Knight Returns or whatever.

A lot of the X-men stories that I like are stories that are the result of a lot of build up. Even the Dark Phoenix is better if you've read some of the stuff that leads up to it. Jean is Phoenix for a while after all. I also find it hard to recommend a lot of Claremont  X-Men because it is plotted but also overly wordy and corny. I honestly think his late 80s stuff holds up more then anything else which includes the Dark Phoenix.

Then again I've read X-Treme X-men and enjoyed it so I don't know what I'm talking about. Don't read X-Treme though it has nice art.

Also I did'nt read all of it, but Exiles with Blink was fun. It was about a bunch of X-men related characters traveling to Alternate Dimensions. It was really fun, but I'm sure the premise dried up.

Comic gods rarely age well. They all tend to go off the deep end in the end. Not always their fault though. Jeph Loeb for instance just hasn't been the same since his kid died of bone cancer. Which is understandable. =/

Grant Morrison wrote All Star Superman tho...

All Star Superman was okay. I'm not really a big fan of Grant. He has great ideas that spiral out of control and get distinguished mentally-challenged.

Sounds like pretty much most comics tbh

true, but grant is treated like a comic god

Comic gods rarely age well. They all tend to go off the deep end in the end. Not always their fault though. Jeph Loeb for instance just hasn't been the same since his kid died of bone cancer. Which is understandable. =/

loeb was never a comic god though. the long halloween and spider man blue are what holds him up, and hes been swinging from those reins for a decade.
