I was on facebook today and drunky cow shared a femsperg masterpiece on how intimidated by hugs some people are. Is this a thing?

Hugs amongst family and really close friends are great – it's a lovely, warm feeling.

If you're hugging or are getting hugged with/by new acquaintances or possible romantic endeavors, its a little odd/uncomfortable.

Handshake>hug. Less awkward, isn't forced, and is memorable. I think most people are fine with the idea of a handshake to begin a date/meet, however the handshake at the end of a date/meet is more controversial. It catches women off guard and is memorable. It gets her talking with her girlfriends ("guess what? instead of trying to hug me...he shook me hand. guuurl.").

Real talk, this is something I've spent more time thinking about than most. I like getting hugs from people, but I rarely ever initiate them and I'm worried that people see me as distant or cold because of it. I've gotten better at it, but I don't really put my hands on people much in general when I'm socializing. I read all the studies about the positive effects of physical contact, but when I try to make the conscious effort to do so I come across articles like the one in the OP.

The only time I've ever had someone refuse a hug though was when they were upset at me. It's also a little annoying to watch people who've known you as a life-time non-hugger react to your hugs. For a couple of friends I've made more recently I can say hugging a lot definitely brought me closer (I mean that figuratively. We got physically closer too, duh.) to some of them.
