I play games that are RTFM par excellence and that's bad game design that's only excusable when a team has limited development resources. In DUST 514 I actually belong to a guild that tries to teach players the mechanics of the game in a formal academic manner (the game has no tutorial, no manual, and no central source for statistical information) and one day it'd be sweet if I could be a lecturer.

Fuck sink or swim bullshit and fuck the scrubs who perpetuate it so they don't get new competition in the clubhouse that reminds them of their arch-scrubdom.

Poison's Whip of Love on dualshock 3 :brazilcry

It's like, don't even try.

For the first time since becoming a fighting game fan since SF2, I am highly considering investing in a fight stick. I've never felt I had a need but I'm past that point because I feel like the pad limits me. Makes my fingers hurt, I can't do a move like Whip of Love because it's awkward doing that move three times in a row with a d-pad for some reason, I have no clue.

Since EVO is coming up lots of fight sticks will be on sale. I put this on my Amazon wishlist. Works on PC, which is good because I'm going to be getting SFV on Steam.

You might also want to try a fightpad-- they're much cheaper and you may find it works perfectly for you.  That's what I use.

Just losing optimism because on Super I wasn't the best, but I still won matches and got to be a B/C ranking. Now I'm just losing one after the other. Hard to keep at it.

When SF4 first came out in arcades, I got my ass kicked all the time, for months.  It wasn't until I'd been playing the home version, almost nonstop daily (had no job at the time and was waiting for classes to start) for a month or so that the game "clicked" and I started winning a lot.  I also went through several characters (Gief in arcade SF4, then Cammy in the home version, then Chun) before finding the one that seemed to gel with me the most.  Maybe Poison is not for you.

You're also just now trying to get back into what is essentially an eight year-old game.  At this point there's not going to be as many new players online and a lot more of the hardcore crowd online instead.  Expect to lose for a while and then once you finally "get" your character, you'll start winning.  Ignore points and rankings in this game, especially on PS3.  You have no idea who barely ever plays ranked (this would be me) or who might have just had a new PSN ID just to play with a lower ranking and fuck with people.  This is one of the benefits to playing the game on other platforms.

You may want to try the PC version.  There's less people playing but there's less input lag online and if you're practicing offline, then jumping online, this may be affecting you more than it did me.  Then again, I don't know how many people are still playing on PS3 because just about my entire friends list switched to PS4 as soon as it got fixed.

Playing fighting games online. Now, :ufup right? Especially 2D. :ufup :ufup

(And yes, I know I'm a hypocrite for mentioning DOA2U online. But you seriously can't translate online skills to offline. Wayyy too much lag tactic bullshit that won't stick in zero-lag environments.)

I'm from Wisconsin, which means driving to Milwaukee which takes an hour or driving to Chicago which takes two hours. I'm not going to drive that far for SF4 sessions

 :ufup

Aren't you from the midwest or middle america as well, you should know how barren shit is besides Chicago and a couple of other cities

Haha yeah, lolplayingfightinggamesonline

OH WAIT

There are people winning tournaments who are those shitty "online players"

OH WAIT

The netcode in a lot of games is more than playable these days

OH WAIT

You can even simulate online lag in practice modes

OH WAIT

Even fucking ARCADE GAMES have online play as a standard feature now.  See Tekken 7.

Are there problems?  Sure.  Could it affect your game offline?  Sure.  The chances of this actually mattering unless you're an actual pro player?  Little to none.

What's the best pad for this? I bought the official Capcom ones from Mad Catz when vanilla IV was released but after a while it felt unresponsive. I remember having sync issues sometimes too. Were there any wired version or something comparable?

Mad Catz stepped up their game and released a wired fightpad later on that is much better than their shitty wireless SF4 pads.  These are the Street Fighter X Tekken (and WWE Brawl, IIRC) fightpads and they are compatible with SF4 on PS4.

That said, the Hori FC4 ain't no slouch and I'm glad I got it, since it will work with every PS4 game going forward, but I still prefer the feel and d-pad of the Mad Catz fightpads over it.  They used to be pretty cheap but it looks like they're hard to find now and go for ridiculous prices.  Am hoping that Mad Catz releases PS4 pads when SFV comes out.

New info coming out from today's SF5 panel at EVO.

Only one disc ever. Free updates/balance changes. 16 characters at launch (4 new). All future characters are free just by playing the game (or presumably bought if you don't want to unlock them with whatever the free currency is).

Only one disc ever.

I really want to believe this, but Blazblue touted the same thing and then went right back to the Capcom re-release of a disc expansion approach with Continuum Shift Extend. :| I fully expect Capcom to go back on their word to get another $40 from people.

Don't remember that ever being said about BB.  I do remember Capcom saying SFxTK was going to be just one disc, and they stuck with that.  Expect lots of DLC that will take way too long to unlock if you want to go the free route though.

I'd not be surprised if updated versions hit stores eventually. They said you'll only need one disc ever, not that they were only releasing one.

It's reasonable to assume they will have updated versions in stores, but it's still the same game with the same content, so they're not exactly lying. Super, Super AE, and Ultra aren't like that. Between the three of them, including SFIV, most people are going to have all three, or at least two of those versions in their collection. The difference, all that content is behind the upgrades, so upgrading is necessary. With this move, it really will be one disc, because all the updates are available for free anyways. It that makes any sense. Basically, the updated retail copies will be things everyone already has, not upgrades everyone NEEDS.

I can't find it, but when CS(1) was released they said they did a system to where system patches can be rolled forward and backwards (and they can, at least on PS3. Dunno about 360 CS) to where players can add/remove characters if they don't have them and/or prefer a certain patch. This was implied to be "future updates will use only this disc." It turns out right after 2.0/CS2 hits they decided to go with CS:Extend/re-releases for rebalance/expansions instead of doing the CS1-2 patch system. It's been like that since.

Like I said, if SF5 holds to that same idea (patches and future forward one-version only), I'll be happy. But I won't believe it until we're 4-5 years into SF5 and there's no "super" version re-release that requires you to buy it.

Then again, Capcom learned after the Super re-release fiasco and did that as DLC for Arcade->Ultra. So... it's a toss-up.

I'm not going to read All Those Pages to see if this has been posted, so here:

Just because they put it into writing doesn't mean they won't 180 on the idea a year or three later and do a re-release that's a forced update for everyone that requires a disc instead of an update. That's what I'm getting at: Capcom can always pull their word on this before it happens. I want to believe, but this is Capcom.

It's going to be one disc.  I agree that they could release discs with more content on them later, but in this digital age, there's no need for multiple releases anymore.

...If only someone would tell that to Arc System Works.   :P

Capcom needs the good will, especially considering their fighting games are some of the few titles coming from them are praised these days, and they obviously not need fuck it up after damaging their rep with fighting game community after MVC3 and SFxT.

We can see what happens after too many upgrades, too-- look at BlazBlue.  Its popularity is pretty much in the toilet now.  Even some of the hardcore players are tired of it and didn't bother with Chrono Phantasma Extend, plus reacted to the newest upgrade announcement with a general  ::) type of response.

It's mostly stuff that doesn't matter at this point, since the game was patched to fix what they fucked up.

What you should know, however, is that a sizable number of characters are locked behind a "DLC" paywall, as are a ton of alternate costumes if you care about that stuff.

I'd imagine the worry is Capcom will use the League Of Legends model of that it's all earn-able in game but the grind slope is so much that you'd be better off paying for it if you are not playing and streaming 24/7. Especially since the Japanese market is a whalers paradise and Capcom will make easy bank. We're talking about the same company that decided Microtransactions were a good idea in DMC4 SE as well. Sticking a LoL model for content on a $60 game is pretty shitty since they could have done something like make the characters free and charge/grind for appearance customisations instead.

It's Capcom. The progenitor of the "ULTRA SUPER FINAL EDITION WE PROMISE: Turbo #RELOAD/SLASH^ACCENTCORE+R-EXTEND- Championship Edition" mode of fighting game revisions. So excuse me for being dubious of the granddaddy going back to their ways after a few years of promising they'll get with the "hip kids"/20XX method of fighting game revisions (that companies REALLY should be doing).

That, too. I'm worried about how long it'll take to unlock characters. I hate the way League does it. I understand why (so people that are like me and hate the grind will probably pay the money [instead of dropping it like I did, granted I hate MOBAs but the grind just is BAD anyway]), but those of us that want to put some work in shouldn't have to make it a second job.

It's an ADK game.
:ufup

World Heroes 1 was kinda crap, but had a death match option (stage traps and spikes and such).  WH2 was a nice improvement and then it got pretty good with WH2 Jet and World Heroes Perfect.  But ADK's best fighting game was Ninja Master's.

Anyway, World Heroes had some stereotypes but was more about making versions of various characters, real or fictional, throughout history, so you while had BIG AMERICAN FOOTBALL PLAYER AND PRO WRESTLER, TRIBAL MUDMAN, and the like, you also had versions of Joan Of Arc, Genghis Khan, Captain Kidd, Lu Bu, and Rasputin all kicking each other's asses.

And who can forget about Rasputin's desperation super move?   :lol

It's an ADK game.  ADK was not SNK.

Quote
ADK Corporation (Japanese: 株式会社エーディーケイ Hepburn: Kabushiki Kaisha ADK?), formerly known as Alpha Denshi Corporation (株式会社アルファ電子?), was a Japanese video game production company throughout the 1980s and 90s. ADK began as a developer of arcade games but is best known for their library of SNK Neo Geo titles, mainly produced in the 1990s in partnership with SNK. Most notable among these are their fighting games and in particular, the World Heroes series. The company closed with properties sold to SNK Playmore in 2003.

This has all the moves for the characters in SFV, plus movelists for Ultra, Ultra's Omega characters, and 3rd Strike.  All web-based.

Yes...it's an ADK game.  SNK "helped" with stuff like letting them use this.  Wikipedia (always the best source for information!) also lists SNK because they now own those properties and have re-released those titles themselves.

After trying for an hour or so, I give up on trying to play the beta tonight.  It's fucked and the servers are going down for maintenance later anyway.

Will try tomorrow!

Streamers are having meltdowns over not being able to get past the title screen.   :lol

Apparently the servers are being restarted.  I'll try again in a little bit I guess.
