Anyone who thinks easier to do combos casual-izes the game exposes themselves. Never mind that SF prior to IV always had easy to do, short combos.

In some ways there's more execution difficulty in V - some characters' entire footsies game depends on your ability to hitconfirm off single mediums. That requires intense focus to get consistent in real matches, and is at least as rewarding as hitting 1 framers. You can't mindlessly mash out jab after jab hoping to get a stray hit like in IV, then let your muscle memory do all the work afterward. 1 frame links are just that - muscle memory. And knowledge of all the dirty tech in IV is also just about memorization. They're single player elements in a 2 player game.
The fact that both offense and defense are more honest makes this a game where you really have to focus on outplaying the opponent. That makes this a better 2 player game than IV. There were players in IV, particularly newer ones, who despite having low knowledge of the game, had pretty good ideas about fundamentals. V clarifies who's an intelligent player or not. The skill ceiling isn't low at all. The game requires far more focus and decision making than IV.

The analysis of a fighting game that's less than a month old surely makes sense when comparing it to a seven year old fighting game

Diehard SFV fans are going to end up more annoying than diehard Third Strike fans at this rate.

at this point i just like making the sfiv stans mad.

on my facebook i'm sick and tired of seeing SFV SUCKS LET'S PLAY ULTRA WE NEED COMBOZ on my street fighter groups. shit is lame af when the rest of us are just trying to figure the game out. SFIV owns, but the latching on to a 8 year old game because something new is in town isn't a good look and is starting to look pathetic/hilarious from some people.

Your first sentence was all that needed to be said. Nobody should be crazy fanatical for Street Fighter 5 at this moment. But everyone writing it off for the "dumbed down" mechanics are insane.

That gaffer comes off as a fraud.

I do think SFV is going to get more complex if Capcom allows support to continue. People have already suggested Alpha styled meter selection, wouldn't surprise me at all if characters will get entirely new V-Triggers. Select this V-Trigger or this V-Trigger.

Is there a release date for when in March Alex and the combat challenges are coming?  Kind of waiting for the challenge mode to arrive before getting more into this since those are good for getting general combos down for characters.

unless you specifically disconnect in the game you are always pinging capcom servers, if that connection drops you get booted to the main menu regardless what you were doing (local versus, survival mode, etc.) because you get points for doing things and these are managed server side.

Of course someone hosting a tournament using the local versus should not have the game connected online, but it's still a pretty funny fuck up of how these pieces fit together

Probably doesn't help that if the PS4 isn't set to be your main/default machine, you need to be online to launch the game.

next time i'm at my local i'm going to see if we're connected to the internet now.  :doge If we are, we need to see what happens if play versus offline.

Ohhhh right. Someone tried to get their ps3 stick to work and we had to restart the game when changing id's for whatever reason because someone had it on the wrong id. we could start the game without being online then. This was two weeks ago during launch weekend.

i keep our tourney consoles offline for this very reason but it's dumb to even have to do that. i'd seen someone post a video about the game being online leading it to drop frames more often but i have no idea how true that is.

this saturday is our first big tourney for V so we'll see how that goes. first time in years that sf4 won't be the first (or even second) highest entered game.

i think sfv has 40ish preregistered i think? i expect 10-12 more to show up. mkx has like 20 but we always get a ton of day of entries for that, so it'll be 2nd most entered. usf4, ki, marvel and ttt are all sitting around 10-15 preregistrations and probably won't get too many more.

then we have angelic coming over from AZ to play one of our best marvel players in a FT15 for $100 so that should be fun

they were just a big jerk when we had them here for a charity tournament/art show for children's heart issues. paid for a flight and room for jwong and ricki here to hang out and be an attraction basically.

justin was a great dude and made sure to get matches with everyone who asked, was chatty with everyone, and ended up giving more to the charity through buying raffle tickets and art than we spent on him. meanwhile ricki sat in a corner playing usf4, refused to get games with a bunch of people, socialized with no one, and barely wanted to take any press pics. perhaps it helped that we've had justin out here before so he knew people but still, at least make an effort. :maf

we also had angelic to the event and dude was really cool. refused our offer to pay for a flight or his gas for driving here and refused any offer for a hotel room and then ended up coming to our after party, brought beer, and got games with everyone until like 3am. really awesome dude. glad he's coming here again this weekend.

Really not that confusing.

Beating someone who was in top 64 at evo isn't much of an achievement if the set is 2-10. It's good to win like that, but also shows a need for more improvement.

Also, your post assumes that there's no level of improvement worth seeking even if you manage to beat someone that good, as if you've reached your skill ceiling. I have not, after playing seriously for under a year, reached my skill ceiling.

Of course.

I'm just saying, I struggle with some things and still working on my fundamentals. So while I'm proud to beat someone that good, it doesn't mean much in the grand scheme and I try not to let it cloud my head. I still lose a lot, but I still find those wins signs of progress.

Shame Rickie is apparently an asshole. Would love her to be my teacher.

another thing to work on is getting lots of matches with different characters. you can be the best player in the world vs ryu but then get shitted on by birdie. diverse matchup play is great because you can learn lessons in one matchup to carry over to another. of course that can be hard to get depending on the scene but it sounds like you have a pretty big sized group to play with, mods.

dude is real cool. that event was especially funny because he spent hundreds on art at the event (including buying a cool chun li skateboard deck) and then also won 2/3 of the raffle prizes cause he bought like 100 tickets at $1 each.  :lol

he came to a previous event because we were doing a $1000 pot bonus for vanilla mvc3, won the event so he got like $1300 and then when everyone went out to the bar after he came along to hang out and bought all of us a round. just a nice gesture after coming to take our lunch money lol.

So, progress?  I'm finding some pretty good matches lately.  One set that stood out was a against a dude who played like complete textbook Ryu scrub.  Destroyed him.  He then picks and uses the most amazing Gief I have seen in this game to date.  I was just like  :o :o :o the entire time.  Owns me up and down.  Then he switches back to a scrub Ken.
:dead

I really hope it was two people switching off.  :lol

Meanwhile we're into week two of March and nothing from Capcom on this update yet.  :doge

I'm kind of glad.  Capcom gets a pass sometimes on questionable business tactics.  This will teach them to release games closer to when they're actually content complete.  I do hope the sales pick up though as the game is fleshed out so they stick with SFV as a platform instead of releasing a SUPER SFV in like 18 months with a ton more content.

Or at least do Early Access for those that want it. I'm not against them pushing it out for tournament players. But there's no offline mode worth a damn. Survival is fucking AWFUL and story mode is done within an hour. What is there for non-tournament players? If they had vs CPU at least people could kinda entertain themselves when the servers are complete shit and not feel like it was a waste of cash.

I do have to ask, though-- what are those sales numbers for?  Physical copies of the game, right?  Would like to know digital sales, especially when the other platform the game came out on is digital-only.  No doubt the game is less popular, but let's be fair here- SF4 came out at retail for PS3, 360, and later on PC.  This game is just PS4.

NPD is physical only, yeah.

Where Naruto continues to stomp that ass dry.

Little over a quarter of a million (125K sales). Note, some people refunded if I look at that total users graph right.

So still under half a million.

https://twitter.com/maximilian_/status/708119993301401600

"Worried about DLC pack 2 for SF5, as Capcom was expecting 2mil shipped by March 31st. End of Feb, it's at 350k sales."

Capcom are utterly insane with their sales predictions.

Casuals don't play online for more than hour if that. Local multiplayer is a mixed bag. They may/may not have friends to play with. They may/may not have a local scene.

As for the bold:

You're missing the point: People paid $60 to Capcom and expected at least a competent story mode that was more than "blow through it in five minutes and you're done, you have no reason to go back to it!" and vs. CPU to dick around in.

You know how I spent 80 or so hours in SF4/Ultra? Vs. CPU. But you apparently don't have that in SF5 at launch. It's a pretty "WTF? :mindblown " feeling, because that would've at least had some of the sting of giving Capcom $60 for a bare-bones release be soothed for some people that don't touch online.

That's not to discount your opinion. But well... I don't touch the online of fighters. I have no local scene. So... what does Capcom give me with SF5 besides Jack and Shit right now?

Fun times:

Played a random casual match against a Karin player named "bouncyxylaphone".  He sucked.  Destroyed him in the first part of the first round and he just stood there for a while.  Was expecting a rage quit but that didn't come until I did it in again in the second round.

Sent him a message and he said he did it because he "doesn't like boring games."   :doge

Got back into casuals and fought him again.  Exact same result.  Rage quit in the second round.  He then messages me "Why do u play like that its so boring get ups and blocking lmao".
:confused

His play style?  I wouldn't even call it turtling.  More like constantly walk backwards and try to keep doing ressenhas (I think that's it...the arcing overhead special), which I would just spiral arrow or cannon spike every time, the get up close and throw him over and over because he didn't know how to counter them.

What is there for non-tournament players? If they had vs CPU at least people could kinda entertain themselves when the servers are complete shit and not feel like it was a waste of cash.

Er...online and local multiplayer?  It IS the main focus of fighting games.  I mean, we know there's no excuse for the lack of an arcade mode and the like, but let's be realistic about this.  The people who really care about that were going to stop playing quickly enough anyway.

Yeah, for me, unless a fighter really clicks and I get into online play (once in a blue moon), for me I'll buy a fighting game, play through the single player content in a couple of weeks and get a feel for all the characters and then shelve it.  But I still get a couple of weeks of fun and the publisher gets my $50-60 so it's a win/win even if I'm pretty casual when it comes to most fighters.  I don't think there's anything wrong with a company caring about giving enough content for a week or two of fun for the offline gamer since they get their $60.

Wondering how much is the PS4 exclusivity hurting them with those so-so sales. Honestly no matter how much I'd like it to be true, I'm not certain the barebone features has that much to do with it. Besides it should have some legs.

Naruto 4 on PS4 outsold SFV on PS4.  It's not an exclusive thing.  The game got negative word of mouth and just like Deadpool's positive word of mouth made it a billion dollars, negative word of mouth can really hurt sales.

Could also just be that the masses were not craving that bad for a new fighting game. SFIV bringing some life back in the genre was a bit unexpected, isn't it ? Capcom milked that one pretty hard... Honestly as an outside observer, I would probably wait for the "Gold / Super / GOTY" edition anyway (It will happen, whatever Capcom may say about it).

Cross platform release would probably have mitigated how low the numbers appears, but point taken  that it doesn't seem to be performing super well even relative to its platform of release.
