First impression: This is DOA5 HD...HD'd edition.  Reminds me of how it feels playing some PS2 HD game port on the PS3.  Not very impressive by current-gen standards as they basically left the backgrounds untouched.  The models still look pretty good.  They should have spent more time on the backgrounds instead of improving the titty bounce.

Need to try online and see if that's been improved.  As it stands, this is still the best 3D fighting game out on PS4/Xbone...because it's the only 3D fighting game out on these platforms. 

PS4 freezes too?  I just saw people complaining about the Xbone version freezing constantly.

Finally got all the DLC downloaded. It's much easier to get stuff via the shop link from the main menu, but not everything was up when I started, so I went through the PS Store, which was much slower, since it would always go back to the top of the list when I downloaded something. I switched back to the in-game shop after doing this for 40 minutes and everything was there...except for Jann Lee's stuff, which I got from the Store, and the Hokoka costume pack. For whatever reason, almost all the costume packs showed as for sale and only the individual costumes came up as "purchased," so I couldn't take the fastest route. One of the swimsuit packs also shows as for sale even though I purchased it on PS3/Vita. Hopefully this will be sorted out in the next day or so.

Tried online briefly. Joined a 4+ connection lobby and it was GREAT! Noticeably better than PS3/Vita/360 were. Tried a 3+ connection lobby and it was pretty laggy, although it still felt better in comparison to PS3. Inputs still felt more responsive. I beat the host of this room with a perfect and he quit, which improved the connection a lot, LOL.

I need to play a lot more online to get a real idea of things, but if online has been improved overall, I'll be very happy with this purchase. Right now there aren't many people online. Hope that also changes. PS3 was always pretty busy, thanks to Core Fighters.

I also was able to redeem my Amazon pre-order DLC. Did this on the SEN website and see no indication that anything is downloading. Can't see anything in my transaction list on the PS4. Sigh...

OK, online is definitely better.  Kept trying different rooms -the hosts probably hated me for leaving so quick- and anything with a 4 or 5 rating was awesome.

Yeah, the netcodes improved massively but at the trade off of image quality on last-gen/PS3. The maps you play on have been degraded in quality, unless it's like Forest of Ends of the Earth where the quality improved MASSIVELY from the dithery mess they were in Ultimate.

I'd take the trade off of a downgrade in graphics for playable netcode.

got core fighters PS4 and had Hitomi from when they gave her away for free at some point, which was perfect cause that's my character.  I was considering buying it, but the free version takes care of everything!  Sweet!

Absolutely.  And I wouldn't say the visuals are bad, it's just that at 1080P, with no extra effects like AA and the like, the game's age and visual flaws are just that much more apparent.  At least everything is actually staying at the same resolution this time.     DOA5's resolution would go up or down depending on the mode and/or what was going on.

That's what's so good about Core Fighters.  If you just use one or two characters, you only need to spend a few bucks!

I did download Core Fighters though to pass the time and damn, it's easy to pick up this game and have fun (which is what I really want out of it honestly)

They made it easier to unlock costumes too.  Now you can just play the lowest difficulty with the same character over and over to get outfits.  Play Arcade Tag on Rookie and you'll be getting two outfits in just a few minutes.  Even the previously difficult to obtain outfits just unlock normally.

I was playing this a few days ago and the game thought I owned the free version and not the retail disc. Tecmo doesn't seem to know what the fuck they are doing with this release outside of making DLC. I liked what I played though and look forward to being able to play the full game when they fix this issue.

I read that those outfits are supposed to get ripped off just like in Senran Kagura.     Seems a little hard to believe they'd go through all the trouble just to do that for some DLC.

A dude on GAF also says he spoke with someone at Tecmo at a recent tournament and was told that the PC version will be based on the PS4 version.  Gonna need more proof than that, but fingers crossed.

Why is there a costume ban for DOA5LR?

This is a movement that was discussed by several members of the community to try and help turn around the image that has plagued the franchise. DOA has always been known for its over-sexualized females and just that alone has pushed people away from even trying the game. Sex Appeal in the DOA franchise will never go away but we, the community, want people to take it seriously and started the costume ban at offline tournaments to force people to focus more on the gameplay aspect of the game. This is a soft ban and is at the discretion of the TO running the game at the event. However we HIGHLY encourage people to not use the suggested costumes on stream for something like Top 8.

PS3/PS4 patch is up.  Haven't tried it myself, but it's supposed to fix all the freezing issues and also contains a code you can use to unlock all of the game content.

All the stuff you get with the game; DLC doesn't have to be unlocked.  Nice to have everything unlocked after all this time.  Some characters I never use apart from random select.

Hayabusa's moves somehow make even less sense in 5.  nothing like getting wrecked by someone who has a good handle on his move set. 

I am enjoying the hell out of this game though, put a ton of time into online even though it's pretty laggy with input delay...but I put up with it in 2U and 4 for years, so it's no prob.  $40 kinda redeemed.

Something's wrong here...the net code has been noticeably improved over previous versions.  It should be running much better for you.

there's always gonna be some input delay.  it's still not nearly as crisp as offline.  And no amount of improvements can fix Joe Dumbass playing online fighting games over wi-fi with the router placed a block away.

You should be noticing big improvements, overall.  BTW you can tell when someone is playing wirelessly.  IIRC they have brackets around their name. 

Right now this is me -am at the 'rents for a few weeks until we can move into our new place- and I have to use wi-fi.  Even then I had plenty of great connection-quality matches last night.

I didn't play 5 online enough to pay that close of attention, though like i said, it is way better than 2U or 4.  Good tip about the brackets, I'll keep an eye out! 

not all wi-fi is bad, but plenty of people have it set up poorly or are kids who don't have control over where that stuff is in the house or whatever.

Was playing DOA5LR last night and popped into a lobby and joined the match in-progress.  There were two other people in the room and the match had no time limit.  Instead of playing, I hear something like "DUDE!  OMG JUST WOOK AT THAT OUTFIT WOWEEWOW SHE IS HOT!  DURR HURR HEY DID YOU WATCH DAT DWAGON BALL Z ABWIDGED VIDEO I WAS TELLING YOU ABOUT?!?!?  OH DUDE LEMME WOOK UP DA WURL FOR YOU IT'S AWESHOME!"  "BUT WHAT ABOUT THE MATCH?!?!?!"  "IT'S FINE DERE'S NO TIME WIMIT HOLD ON LEMME GO GET IT YOU'RE GONNA WAFF SO HARD OH MAN I CAN'T FIND DA WURL ON YOUTUBE"   They kept talking about Dragonball for another few minutes without playing, prompting me to leave the room.

i stick to super serious ranked matches.  though I'd probably get to play more if I did lobbies.  I also started paying attention to strats and the fighting engine more, been doing the same shit with Hitomi since 2U.  Still working on calming down and not mashing counter when under pressure.

If you want to talk about latency causing control issues, the one thing not to abuse online are counters, but everyone is guilty of going counter-crazy from time to time.   

Definitely try player matches.  You can filter the area/region and search by connection quality, too.
