One article talks about Carmack’s “mobile VR development,” and I just pictured someone stumbling around in public with those goggles strapped on.

all the VR talk is confusing.  you got three main players going about it their own way.  when the time comes and these are released, it's not sounding like you can pick up a Morpheus and play games made for the Rift, or use the Rift with the HTC Valve one.  and each headset has a unique controller.  it's sounding less like picking up a tv and monitor and more like buying into a system.

There was drama when some devs posted on reddit that the Morpheus development is kinda fucked and the specs are real low compared to what Valve and OR have termed ideal. Seems like it's a Kinect style disaster waiting to happen

The DX12 and Vulkan talks though :lawd :rejoice

Not surprised about Morpheus. This is the same company that launched the Vita and basically left it to die. I'm sure the same thing is going to happen with their VR shit: launched, no one supports it (because it's weak)/not PC-compatible, dies a month later.

Act like Morpheus won't take off cause of hardware when it really is who the fuck wants VR aside from a few nerds on the internet?

More importantly, why buy a closed source VR that will have no porn? :pacspit

It's partially both. Occulus/Vive/etc. PC-stuff may take off BECAUSE the hardware isn't tied to a platform and like the developer said: They can slap a "you need a powerful PC" tag on it and only the nichest of enthusiasts will bother to get a powerful enough PC to use it. Meanwhile people that want to "try out" the hardware and have a decent PC will probably lower settings to get the "WOW" factor.

I doubt the PS4 will look like that. I'm trying to think of a... eh, maybe Half-Life 2 VR would be the best the PS4 would be able to handle at 60FPS?

Morpheus is using "software reprojection" to display at 120Hz by adding in a duplicate frame (Like some of their TV's do) to give the idea of 120Hz. Which is really Sony trying to PR spin their way out of saying they are using interpolation for it. Which is ghastly as it will create artifacts and ghosting. On top of that. It's single screen 1080P which would be a 960x1080 frame buffer per eye. Oculus DK2 had it and it had significant problems with the "Screendoor effect" which makes the image super pixely. Which is one of the reasons they pushed the specs higher for Crystal Cove then even higher to 1440P for Crescent Bay.

Whole thing seems like a mess.

Valve seems to be hitting the specs sweet spot as someone with a decent Intel or one of the top level AMD FX CPU and a decent AMD/Nvidia will be able to dual project two framebuffers at around 900P 90FPS. OR Will need quite a bit higher higher specs. Both have the advantage that people can just throw power at it or reduce settings till it works and VR seems like it will thrive in that open environment.

Exactly what I'm saying. PS4 doesn't have that advantage of being able to "one-size-fits-all" like the PC VR envrionment is going to do. What's curious to me on the PC front (and the reason the PC VR front is going to have issues) is the fact that there is three separate companies fighting for a slice of the pie and I'm not sure the market is willing to support that. For the sake of each other, I hope they allow cross-compatibility with other hardware/manufactures, because if someone can get whatever they want at the price they want and are able to enjoy VR from developers that didn't bank on the purchased company, that'd be a huge boon on PC.

Valve has said the Vive will be compatible with the Rift and Razer OSVR plus there are unified API's for all three on the way like AMD's Liquid VR. So I don't think any of the PC VR's will lock out content (Especially as that audience will reject walled gardens pretty quickly unless it's Valves for some odd reason. Valve Stanleys, pffft). Sony's already said Morpheus will be closed source and only on PS4.

Speaking of Valve stanelys, they are mad as all hell Microsoft are making a big gaming push in Windows 10 and quoting the "Microsoft commitment to gaming" post on GAF even though MS's plan seems pretty solid and Phil Spencer already said in an interview "We talked to Valve, let them know what we are doing and wanted their input on Win10 in January" and seemed to hint cross buy on xbone/win 10 may be via Steam as well as their own service. It's light years ahead of MS past token efforts (DX12 da Gawd) and MS and Valve actually talking about whats best for PC Gaming is good news. But Valve stans are still mad and even claiming they are only going to use VulKan simply because its not MS even though both DX12 and Vulkan look great (Plus its nice having DX12 around if AMD cards shit the bed again on OGL). Even though Valve has been lazy as shit lately, wont improve customer support, Steam's big sales have been terrible in quality the last year and they misfired hard with Steam Machines.

Yeah, both consoles have a last-gen GPU and a laptop CPU. Somewhere between 660 and 760gtx-ish levels, I think?

Probably looking at "full" Morpheus games with graphics around the level of the BioShock iOS port, realistically.

But, none of this "which is better" shit matters in the slightest. All of these devices are facing two problems which cannot be overcome, and doom them  from the start:

1. You have to wear them on your face. People don't like wearing shit on their heads/faces, and even the lightest of these things look like they'd start to wear on you after, say, two or three minutes.
2. You can't really share the experience with friends/family. All they can do is sit there watching you twitch and stagger around like a gimp with a plastic block strapped to your face.

So no matter how good even the best VR headset is, it's still a solitary, uncomfortable experience. How enticing. This latest revolution in gaming will be keeping company with Wiimotes and Kinects and PS Moves in various closets and/or Saturday morning yard sales in under a year.

ballpark, yeah.  the one demo I saw was set in a closed room and had bioshock 1-ish graphics.  even the best of the hd collections aren't hitting 60 stable and without the extra brunt of VR.  that aside, the demo looked pretty cool, like Police 911 + Receiver.

I think the morpheus' greatest (and only real) contribution to VR should be its design.  oculus and htc should copy its floating visor design over the three strap goggles for consumer models.

Quote
This is MS's various statements on their promise to PC gaming.

2005 - We care about PC gaming, Longhorn (Vista) to usher in modern PC gaming with "Tray and Play"
Vista launches with none of the stuff MS promised, Vista itself sucks the ass of a thousand camels.

2006 - MS: Don't Count PC Games Out
MS announces GFWL and how utterly amazing it will be, suckers everywhere rejoice in the eventual ass reaming they don't know is coming yet.

2007 - MS continues PC push
MS launches GFWL...and it has a $50 a year fee, and they announce a whole slew of games to include Shadowrun with cross platform play and Gears of War 1! What are you paying for you ask? Jank ass software that crashes and has the most unintuitive updating system known to man. Load a game, game says you need update. Signs you out, downloads update, you jump back in...oh GFWL client has a update too! signs you out, downloads up date and you log back in...

MS will shortly thereafter disband Ensemble because MS feels that they're (MS) moving in a different direction! But don't worry we tots <3 you PC gamers.

    2008 - MS: PC gaming is A-okay
Yea we've looked at some money pie charts and can see that PC gaming brings in billions in revenue. Here is our open letter to how awesome PC gaming is and our promise to support it! We finally put some new titles up on GFWL! Oh and we got rid of the $50 a year fee for GFWL, see we're serious about PC gaming! If that's not a sign of commitment, I don't know what is!

2008 - MS: PC gaming is not dead!
Look at this event we're throwing for PC gaming, you think we'd throw this if we didn't truly care about it?! Look at these games that will be on GFWL. We <3 PC gaming. You want fixes for GFWL issues? We'll look into that.

2008 - MS bolsters PC gaming with all new Games for Windows Live!
Hey gaiz remember those GFWL client issues you were having...well we didn't fix those per say but....here is the same shit in a slightly newer skin! PROGRESS

2009 - MS: PC gaming still a priority for us!
Okay gaiz look, this time we're serious about our upcoming push in PC gaming. It's so vital to us at MS that we give the PC our love and support!

2010 - MS: "We're doubling down on PC gaming
By doubling down we mean we're keeping this shittastic GFWL client around because! We might even throw an update at it to fix the problem of game saves being randomly deleted or rendered worthless...maybe.

2010 - MS Launches Games for Windows Marketplace
Hey gaiz, we're making GFWL even better because it's now called Games for Windows Marketplace. Everything is brand new and easy to use, anonymous journalists have even said it's better than Steam. We had 3 interns and a janitor work on this, so you know we're committed!

2010 - MS: Windows 8 is going to relaunch gaming!
Hey gaiz, MS again. With Windows 8 we're totally going to put our full weight behind PC gaming just like we promised back in 2006! Pls be excite.

    2012 - MS: We won't ditch GFWL!
We're committed to PC gaming and we absolutely think GFWL is the best play to get PC games and play with others. Our client is awesome....ly bloated and deletes shit randomly, but that's really one of the charms of PC gaming that we captured! It's a balanced experience! Hope you rike!

2013 - MS to discontinue GFWL
Hey gaiz new manager here, so like a bunch of your games might stop working come 2014...but that's okay! We expect there to be transitions as we build out new investments, but we remain committed to bringing first party gaming services and games to Windows for years to come. We will share more details in the future!

2013 - MS promises core first party games coming to PC
    We're so committed we swear!

Sorry, but all MS is doing is blowing smoke up the ass of gullible people. So yea go ahead and get your hopes up and get excited. In a year or two when none of what they say comes to fruition...I'll pretend to act shocked.

Should point out Ensemble closed because they were so super late and overbudget on AOE III the producers were surprised they weren't shut down sooner (But y'know. Facts). But it's wheeled out every time MS says something about PC gaming.

Now that I've taken a really good look at the steam controller, I guess it makes sense design-wise. It's only $50, so I'll probably give it a shot. If nothing else it might make a decent enough Surface Pro controller.

yeah, I'll buy one because I don't think things through, but the newest model with an analog stick has me more confused than before.  most PC games don't do simultaneous kb/m and 360/xinput controls.  so I'm not sure how the analog stick will be analog.

Uh... the same as plugging in a 360 controller and mouse currently? TF2 will let you do that. Only console ports from Capcom where they fuck about with making one the "dominate" control scheme is the only company/games that I can think of where you can't mix the two options.

Once they fine tune VR porn to make it close to the real thing, there are going to be more than a few people who will never leave their houses again.

VR porn will basically have the same fan base as animu dating sims: Enough for documentaries about weird people for the rest of humanity to guffaw at, but not enough to sustain a product that had billions of dollars put into it.

sorry but this is so so sooooo wrong!  It'll be weird at first, people may not admit to it right away, then it'll be the default porn.
