I'll believe they are commited to this when I see it.

It would be something if they went from nothing to their games being playable on everything and one upping Sony and MS in this.

Figures that the only way Nintendo finally has a proper account system is by leaving it up to someone else to make it for them.

It means Nintendo is going third party, new Metroid game to be made by Spark Unlimited, Pokemon to be match three game with limited free lives and monsters, new Mario and Zelda and Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy and Half Life 3 and Earthbound HD and Shenmue 3 and online that won't get hacked, all exclusive to Nintendo NewNX3DSU.

That's already on the 3DS.  :teehee

Numbers numbers, I don't know what it all means.

It means that Nintendo now has a 10% ownership interest in one of the major mobile companies in Japan.

Are all the Nintendo fans on gaf melting down? They kept saying going mobile would be idiotic for Nintendo to do.

This was something Nintendo had to do, but their business partner? That seems an odd choice. Most likely great for the Japanese market, but do they have global reach? seems like they'll either be disadvantaged in Non-japanese markets or have to make new partnerships for each new market, which will cost them additional money.

The sticking point is that the smartphone games will be all-new things (or reskins of existing mobile games? like P&D maybe) that use Nintendo IP's. It doesn't seem like these games will be developed in-house at Nintendo, either.

No ports.

I think they waited too long to develop the kind of cultivated ecosystem they're hinting at (aside from making games/apps for currently existing markets). Everyone's kind of already locked down to whatever app markets service their chosen device, and probably aren't shopping around to hop to a whole new system and leave all their paid shit behind.  If they start talking about a new system next year, the earliest it's coming is holiday 2016, which is nearly two years away. That's pretty much an entire generation when it comes to tablets and mobile devices. They keep denying they're developing some sort of mobile/tablet/console hybrid, but I'd put down a decent bet that's exactly what it is. Too late. Tablets are already moving in the other direction, towards larger form factors for more productivity-oriented markets. I keep reading rumors that Apple's about to shitcan the Mini after this year. Cheap tablets already claimed that half of the market.

Best news is the unified account system, but you know that's probably gonna end up being a clusterfuck right off the bat, with no one being able to transfer over games they've already purchased under the old hardware lock.

Honestly, it feels too late. Success in technology rarely favors the company that is reactive.

I know there will be a lot of interest in their first wave of stuff that comes out, but that excitement will soon dissapate and they will just be another cog in this giant machine of content that churns new shit out every day. They won't be afforded the preciousness of their platform where each drop they squirt out feels like a geyser to their fans.

They should let you use the Wii U controller to connect to your tablet which connects to your Wii U so you can play the game disc on the tablet while using the Wii U controller to stream to your TV and order Dominos.

EDIT: Just realized I ripped off Trey Parker:

Yeah they're late, but here's the thing. There's a glut of mobile games right now because anyone with a mom's basement can make a game and put it out there. Nintendo (like Disney) has one things that hardly anyone else does, a very strong set of characters and branding to go with it. In the glut of toilet gaming Nintendo can really differentiate itself. It's late, but not too late. I have to wonder with the way the market is if there'd every really be a "too late" for Nintendo

On the other hand, Journos who don't usually touch mobile stuff will cover them without fail. That and their brand will help them stand out more. I don't see them having run-away success relative to the platform, but it'll be fun to see something outsell their console and handheld offering.

Nintendo is going to invent (actually probably has) a technorganic tactile mesh that you place over your screen that's invisible but replicates the feeling and capabilities of holding an actual controller but one in which they can change the buttons available at any time.

Book it.

I'm not saying they're going to flop, it just it won't be this massive windfall that some are predicting.  It's just another (moderate) revenue stream.

I can't deny Nintendo's unique position as being the Disney of the video game world, but just because you have recognizable characters doesn't mean it will cross-over into mobile success. Angry Birds is (arguably) just as recognizable as Nintendo's icons and Rovio still hasn't figured out how to parlay that into new franchises.

I really think Nintendo's ego is still too big to allow 'A-grade' material released on mobile. We'll just see ports and fan-service mini-games.

I think this would be the real issue. I think Nintendo still looks down on mobile. So they'll put out decent fan service stuff but they'll save their real efforts for the console and handheld stuff I would guess.

You and I both know they'll start reselling some of their old games on mobile.

They'd be dumb not to, that's a potential goldmine.

Maybe, maybe not. The official line right now is that there won't be ports.

not for nothing, but Disney put out some quality games in AAA publishing and languished, switched focus to mobile and is now doing very well for itself in that space.

Nintendo's probably going to make more money in the next year off F2P Pokemon games than they have over the entire life of the Wii U and 3DS.

Few F2P mobile games have generated as much revenue as the last couple mainline Pokemon games have. 14 million copies (Pokemon X/Y) at $40 a piece is a tall order for a freemium game to beat.

Now, if they did a Pokemon Shuffle (or similar spinoff) for mobile it'd probably do quite well relative to the mobile market. But it's not going to eat the mainline series' lunch.

It's a cross-platform system, they've explicitly said it'll work on Nintendo systems, phones, tablets, and PC's (via browser, presumably.)

Now, what it'll actually *do* is up for speculation. Technically, Nintendo Network IDs and Miiverse work across 3DS, Wii U, smartphone browsers and PC browsers. But DeNA is supposedly a frontrunner in this area, so it should be fairly modern.

Wait, explain this. Are they finally being dragged kicking and screaming into a X-box Live/Playstation Network/Steam/Origin, like account system?

I may cancel that Gateway order on pirating Ace Attorney 5 instead of buying it from the eShop if that's the case. Because frankly, fuck the (previous?) lack of an account system.

Nintards need not worry, Nintendo is going to put minimal effort into this.  Expect NES Virtual Console games with maybe a Yoshi Touch & Go 2 at the beginning.  A Super Mario Bros. on iOS will still get millions of downloads, even if they charge $4.99 for it.

Meh, honestly I was caught off guard by this announcement, didn't think Nintendo would 'relent' so quick. We'll see if anything remotely interesting comes out of it but I doubt it. I don't think this is gonna be the license to print ridiculous amounts of money like many people think, premium products haven't been doing so hot on mobile lately and hooking IAP whales is a crapshoot.

Ehh, I've already made my peace with the fact that mobile gaming as it currently stands is not for me. Thankfully, there's more than enough classic gaming for me to catch up on, that is, when I even have time to game.

The one thing lost in this  announcement is that DeNa (formerly Mobage) is a shit tier gaming company that puts the bare minimal effort in their egregiously priced f2p fare. Maybe they've gotten better in the past two years since I last downloaded a title, but i doubt it. Maybe their only involvement will be on the social networking side and distribution. But if they are going to handling the actual game development .... Ehhh.

The DS series, including the 3DS, has done well for Nintendo. They are likely working on its successor right now. The phone and tablet stuff which is coming will simply cease the drain of attention time Nintendo fans had already spent away from Nintendo games on phones and tablets.

Nintendo are developing the games. DeNa are just doing the shared account system and distribution. Seems like Nintendo only really invested in them for their backend systems.

Yeah, it seems like many people, including some irresponsible news outlets, think that Nintendo is going to let some other company have free reign over Nintendo’s carefully managed properties. Hell, the Playstation happened because Nintendo wasn’t willing to share control over their hardware with Sony. DeNA is going to be ridden hard in this "partnership."

Let's not go overboard on the Nintendo praise though. Look at something like Nintendoland and you're probably looking (quality-wise) at what Nintendo will release on mobile. It's not like that was some stunning achievement in gaming.

Well I guess that depends on how you look at it:

As a business man: I love the low risk high reward move by Nintendo. They can't do anything but win here.

As a gamer: Meh, I don't need to play SMB3 on my tablet.
