Glen rewatches Evangelion

Decided to give this a rewatch to see if I'm wrong about it being a complete waste of time when better mech shows like Gurren Lagaan exists. We'll also see if Shinji is still an intolerable POS, or if his existence is somehow justified.

Just to get it out of the way: there's zero chance I'll be putting in anywhere near the amount of effort Karakand put into his Blossom thread. I will not be doing screencaps. I'll be watching on one monitor and typing up observations on the other. Let's get started.

Episode 1
The episode starts off on the right foot, with a shot of what looks to be an Angel under the water, and some cool shots of perimeter defenses and empty city streets. Good apocalytic/world-at-war vibe.

Around 3:30, Jay Dubya appears on screen, and my irritation level rises substantially.

4:00 - cool battle scene as the Angel shrugs off human military attacks like Rahxephon shrugs off interest from black chicks.

7:00 - car held together with duct tape like what I imagine Karakand drives on his way to a 16 hour day of misery. Fan-service thigh shot of the purple-haired chick. She has some internal monologue about making car payments, like that fucking matters when Revelation is happening. More JayDubya shots.

11:00 - Shinji is reading an instruction manual, because clearly JayDubya never planned ahead and bothered to train humanity's last hope in advance. I would have had the kid in training since he learned to crawl, but that's just me. Libertarians aren't known for their practicality.

13:30 - Shinji is just now learning that he's there to pilot a giant robot. Purple-haired chick didn't bother to explain this to him during the car ride. Apparently the instruction manual he was reading was about something else entirely, probably some useless shit. Everyone involved in this plan is a goddamn moron.

13:40 - the next few minutes: - Extended scene showing Shinji being a little bitch. Refuses to pilot the Eva, asks why he's there after it's just been explained to him, then after he's given the middle finger to humanity and forced them to go with a pilot on life-support, whines about how he isn't needed after all. It only took 17 minutes to establish this kid as the worst protagonist in history.

18:40 - Shinji mans up after seeing that the other pilot, Rei, literally is on life-support. Now he's going into battle with absolutely zero training because JayDubya doesn't believe in central planning.

21:20: Purple haired chick: "Can we really do this?" JayDubya: "If we don't stop the Angel, humanity is done for." No fucking shit you morons. Even Shinji gets that at this point. Everyone seems to love contradicting things they said minutes earlier.

22:00 - Shinji is facing down the Angel. Cut to credits.

Next up: Episode 2.

I can tell you're really giving the show a chance.

I mean I guess it's not in the first episode or maybe it is I don't know, but like anything it requires some suspension of disbelif. I mean do you go into everything with such a nitpicky ciritcial eye? I mean you kind of have to let stories you know breathe.

And I don't know if the explantions for many of those "problems" are in the first episode but....

Gendo didn't want Shinji around. They have a terrible relationship so of course he had no plan for him and wasn't going to train him. Shinji was never part of his plans, he always planned to use Rei the person who has been training for Evangelions since "birth". It's not even clear that evangelion unit one was supposed to go into combat. Unit 2 is the first combat unit and 0 is under repairs. I also think they mention they were'nt ready for the Angels. I mean either way it's pretty clear in the first episode Gendo does not exactly want Shinji and this is last chance thing. It's not like Gendo would'nt know there's a chance Shinji can pilot it.

Why would Misato tell Shinji when it's his father who should ask him that?

How is Shinji a little bitch? Is a 14 year old nerd boy supposed to be gung ho about getting in a robot demon and fighting Godzilla? He's also asking him why he's there because he's pissed off that his father only wanted him for his own needs, with no care about Shinji. I mean the writing is'nt even subtle here. It's not a literally "why am I here". It's "why are you using me like a tool?" He's "winning" because again his dad did'nt want him there as a person, did'nt want him to be there so maybe the could have a relationship, didn't want him there as a son. No he just wanted him to pilot a robot(which is a huge task in itself), do something solely for him, and care fuck all what Shinji actually wants. Yeah I guess he really should be more badass.

In the end, it's a stupid giant robot cartoon. It's a superhero comic book that happens to have some substance.

I'd rather watch the version of Eva that doesn't star a whiny little bitch.

Might I recommend some French literary references in your episodic blogging.

If you want to talk about obnoxious protagonists, 08th MS Team got Eva beat cold.

This also came up in the suggestions while looking for Eva-related videos.  Makes sense.

Simon's character development is ridiculously close to Shinji's.

Don't see that all.  Simon also grows up and doesn't jerk off all over his hand.

The fuck?

Achem.

All the avatar conveys is that I think he's a fascinating character, I think he looks cool, and the show itself is awesomesauce.

Gendo is an evil bastard that represents the absolute nadir of what a scientist can become with no sense of bioethics whatsoever.  He has nothing but the most tenuous grasp on his own humanity.  He's a monster, a villain to be defeated.  In short, you should love him, cuz by everything you say, he's just like ya.

He abandons his kid until the second he has a use for him.  And the second he doesn't have a use for him, he will dispose of him.  That's Gendo.  Whatever Yui saw in him in college is long gone by the time the show starts... in large part because his own reckless experiments lost him Yui.

Actually the other thing that the show makes clear is that Gendo is a grown up Shinji who has completely closed up shop and doesn't let anyone in, so as a result he doesn't give a fuck about anyone... and he doesn't give a fuck about saving the world. He just has contingency plan upon contingency plan piled high so he can betray anyone and everyone so he'll be the one in control at the end of the world... which would let him have Yui back.
Liar! I'm sure you have a son that you force to go into robots!

I always felt like EVA has incredible art design and tons of interesting ideas, but just fails to put the together properly

Very enjoyable show/movies, but I don't see them as 'deep' as EVA stans do
