Go back and read some original reviews of the first Friday the 13th movie, or Halloween, My Bloody Valentine, etc. You'll see a lot of similar sentiments expressed there, lots of "people were laughing and cheering at murder" and "I fear for the future" hand-wringing. Yet here we all are, still an intact society 35 years later, where you can watch any of those movies uncut on television and they seem tame in comparison to an average episode of Hannibal or Walking Dead. We didn't devolve into packs of cannibalistic rape raiders, and progress didn't stop. No matter what time period, there's always someone on the street corner wearing their "The End Is Nigh" placard and loudly proclaiming their outrage. Same old shit, different clothes and hairstyles. Meanwhile, the rest of the world carries on, as always.
