I have $700 and want a gaming PC or laptop

Long story short, I've been cleaning up around here and managed to trade a bunch of shit in and have over $700 on Amazon to treat myself to something nice and for a while, I was content on grabbing a PS4, but each time I'm about to order it, I kinda realize there isn't really all that much on there I actually want to play (I already own a Xbox One), so I've decided that I'm probably going to go the PC/laptop route for gaming

I'm not the most tech-savvy person, so I don't really have all that much knowledge on picking out parts or whatever and I know that we have some people around here that mainly game on PC, so I figured I would make this thread to hear out suggestions for parts or just builds in general

You can build a pretty decentish i5 rig for $700. Well, not sure if you can do it if it all has to be bought from amazon, but probably. Gimme a couple minutes.

That processor is pretty fast supposedly; I wouldn't recommend overclocking as you would then have to get a better heatsink than the one that comes with it, and since you're admittedly sort of a noob overclocking is probably not advised.

Whatever you do, don't buy an AMD CPU. Their current offerings are just not worth it and it's not going to change any time soon. Definitely get an SSD. Don't skimp out on the PSU. Get a case with a removable dust filter. Replace the stock fan on whatever CPU you buy, even if you don't plan to overclock, since the stock fans are pretty loud.

Techreport updates their system guide every few months and offers sensible choices for all price ranges. Their "sweet spot" picks are what you want to aim for, but you can always mix and match.

Not really. Only worthwhile choice would be a GTX 970, but if you're satisfied with the performance you're getting right now you might as well wait for the new cards to come out (which is soon-ish) and re-assess your choices then.

Some of the power supplies can be a bit overkill on pcpartpicker. 750w supplies powering 400-450 watt computers. Under-loaded supplies won't operate at the rated efficiency (so no point paying a premium for a silver or gold also).

At budget, that 20-40 Dollar/GBP difference can mean the next GPU is attainable depending on what deals are floating around.
