I have a friend (who happens to be a roommate) who just loves to talk. If you ask him how his day was he'll proceed to describe it in detail for the next half an hour. Sometimes he'll just sit down and start talking without being asked. The other day me and my girlfriend cooked together and she asked him in passing how his Christmas vacation was. Instead of enjoying a nice meal together we had to listen to his entire trip in exhausting detail.

Without being rude, what's a clever way to tell this friend to stop talking or somehow cut his ramblings short?

I think that's a more recent trend with hospitals preferring to hire people with healthy lifestyles. I know in California some hospitals will even do nicotine tests for entry level positions and as you say, young people in the field tend to be in decent health. Maybe there is a placebo effect with that.

It's funny cause doctors and nurses in the 90s used to smoke a lot and would probably prefer to sacrifice their body for vices as long as their hands and brains still worked.

Yeah the Bernie people are taking on more of a Ron Paul style evangelism.  It's that type of mentality where deep down you know it's a long shot but you want that long shot candidate to win but you don't want to be wrong either.  I'm looking forward to the Bernie Sanders equivalent of melt values here in the next month or two when he starts coming up short in just about every race past Iowa and New Hampshire.  Furthermore I don't see Democratic superdelegates going for someone who has been an independent up until the last few months.

Facebook friend I have says this year she will be expanding from defriending conservative supporters to also people who crap on any democratic candidate. She really means hers.
