Director of Photography asks for a pretty precise skillset that includes some comprehension of optics, physics & chemistry (less so with film being phased out, but still) and a very up to date knowledge of the cameras being used at any given time as well as lights and projectors. There's some overlapping in a couple of areas (Some director do the framing for their shots, others leave that to their DoP) but 95% of directors absolutely could not become a DoP without training (and many could not regardless even with it). It's not just a matter of having good taste in lighting and a coherent vision for what image you want to achieve. Unless I am missing some widely known, way beyond average for a director, technical proficiency that Snyder would have... I can actually deny with some confidence he would make a great DoP at the drop of the hat.
Also
They should at least keep him for art direction and honestly some individual scenes.
He should not be allowed to touch the script or dialogue though
is pretty

too. Segregating art direction and writing is pretty much the contrary to what this job is all about. Or then you're a "production designer" and it is exactly the same point as for DoP : those jobs actually have experience and skillset requirements.
Or the post just after about putting him on second unit duty as if it was something that could happen.
TLDR : Some gaffers have laughably big misunderstandings of how movies are made but still are
