So it's rumored that Apple is going to get rid of the 3.5mm headphone jack on their next iPhone. You know, the thing that almost every pair of headphones and earbuds out there uses.

Apple fanatics think this is a great idea: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1166294

"If you want to use your old headphones, don't worry, you can always just connect with a dongle!"

If all phones switch to another standard port like USB-C (which is a new, reversible version) then that's not a horrible deal considering earbuds usually get replaced more often than your phone. From what I understand, the point of dropping the 3.5mm jack is to free up space for bigger batteries or to make the phones even thinner for whatever reason.

I'd bet in 10 years, the iPhone will just do everything wirelessly and be as thin as a credit card.

This is hilarious. I remember when iFanboys made fun of the T-Mobile G1 and other early Android HTCs for needing an adapter for headphones.

Well the phone is on the other foot now, fuckbois. :doge

People are trying so hard to make this decision not seem scummy. A lot of people can't admit its scummy but they don't care and can afford to buy new Apple shit, and they buy it just cuz.

No phones don't need to be any thinner, and it's hard to predict trends dealing with phone size in all honesty. In ten years I think their might be a google glass equivalent that will make phones seem obsolete.

Also not being able to use AUX cables is a big loss in my eyes.

I didn't say I liked this. Just that's the direction they're heading at the moment. I actually think super thin phones are uncomfortable in the hand.

Super thin phones feel weird. I got big hands so there never seems to be a good angle to hold them without turning my wrists inwards. It's the epitome of a first world problem, but if I'm buying something that expensive, I want it to be comfortable to use. And I'll be goddammed if I buy a product that only allows for proprietary headphones.

This threads absolutely crazy... LET'S ROCK!

Quote
"Have you been into space?" I asked, as I sat through the tuition video - although I have to admit by the time it had finished I'd already forgotten which buttons did what, and I was also distracted by trying to explain what was around me for the radio show.

"No. It was… metaphorical," he answered.

But before I could find out what he meant, suddenly, I found I just couldn't move.

Nothing responded as I expected. I couldn't even get to the space ship hatch to get outside and start my mission. I started to feel very hot and very disorientated. I was tumbling around, bumping into walls and debris and no longer knew which way was up.

My virtual space helmet visor was cracking.

Within about 30 seconds I wanted to rip the helmet off and run to the bathroom.

I asked to stop.

Adam was totally thrown.

"Let me just get you out of the ship…." he said, taking the control from my hands.

But it was too much - I had to remove the headset.

He looked genuinely crushed and I felt terrible.

"We've never had this reaction before," he said.

He started pressing buttons and his face lit up.

"The controller is configured wrong!" he said.

"No wonder you couldn't do it."

I'm not sure whether this was a polite ruse to save my dignity.

"I still don't think I feel very confident about continuing," I said sadly.

There was a long pause.

"I'm sorry…" I tried.

"Would you tell me about your inspiration for the game?"

He didn't respond.

Quote
That honestly sounds like plus to me if that's how some people will react to it. Sounds great. Real like.

Yes. This is exactly what I want. Seems like the exact reaction one should get being stuck just spinning around like you're in Gravity.

"Sony is totally going to sell their thing at a loss."

 :lol

The PS4 was underpowered at launch and has been profitable for a while now I believe. The Vita was originally sold at a high as fuck price with the memory cards also being expensive as fuck.

Being good at business isn't a sin or a bad thing necessarily, but fanboys are spinning a really dumb narrative. Sony wants to make money at this point, while taking very little risk.

PSVR will either be okay at best quality wise and still be sold for $299 or $399. Or it'll try to match the Rift and be sold for $499 or $599. Sony will not release a magical product that's better than the Oculus Rift while eating the cost. They're going to test the waters with a inferior but more cost effective product or exploit the nerds with expensive tech, its one or the other.

The people that buy the PSVR at $299 are going to feel so fucked when in a few years later, $299 will get you something that's way better and will have a lot more support.

Or maybe not, this entire ship may crash and VR will be dead for a while.

Don't let the hardcore of the hardcore PC bros on Gaf fool you. $600-$800 is the average cost of a new gaming PC nowadays, one that should let you run shit at good or great settings for the next three or four years.

$600 for a piece of VR tech is fucking terrible. $600 could get you a great TV or some mega monitor nowadays.

I know, but what did people expect?
Occulus has to sell at a good profit, unlike PSVR.

Sony is going to sell PSVR for profit as well. Looking more into PSVR, that shit is going to be $400 at least.

When's the last time Sony took a huge risk financially when it comes to gaming?

It's not so much $599. Palmer Luckey was putting the ballpark out "More than $350" last October. People expected it to come in much cheaper than that. Valve were also saying "It was going to be more expensive" but also it wasn't going to break the bank. So people were expecting much lower around $399 or so.

PSVR is going to be $499 at least (And there's going to be a lot of fustrated Sony stans when it's not going to hit the resolution and graphical fidelity general casual consumers expect or the heights they were stanning for) and Vive's probably going to run near the $800 mark. VR's not going to get off to a great start. The cost will come down once Chinese companies get in the game and start offering their solutions but Early Adopters are going to eat that early adopter tax hard.

The fine dining we're gonna get, tho' :whew

Through Meant to be Seen (MTBS)'s virtual reality and 3D discussion forums,[8] Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus and longtime MTBS discussion forum moderator,[9] developed the idea of creating a new head-mounted display that was both more effective than what was then on the market, and inexpensive for gamers.

Why am I not shocked that the dude who sees the goobergrape menace in every bad thing that happens is a virgin who is super awkward around women.

The Lamp in general is a gross person. He's lamented not getting a happy ending from a massage parlor, yet he also talks about how he is gay and refuses to be with men because it is against God. Though he only claims to be part of the LGBT community when it suits him being a victim. The rest of the time he claims to be 90% gay, 10% straight, and so he isn't lying to himself or women.

Never surprises me of the anti-consumer fellatio of some gaffers.

Yes, game preservation is something worth making fun of.

Every time you step outside of your safety zones on gaf you're reminded just how moronic 90% of that forum is.

It's wise to always remember that Gaf doesn't only house morons.

I agree with the rest of the post. Heavy DRM coupled with out clusterfuck of copyright laws makes it hard to preserve and play old games. I love NOLF but lost my disks so can't buy it anymore and it's rights are so messed up nobody can get them untangled. It's similar with Blade Runner adventure game or say something like "Snatcher". It's just a few examples and as we go forward it's going to show itself more and more.

It's also dumb and short sighted from various publishers but I do understand some of their issues with piracy especially first month when most revenue for AAA games comes in although even that is changing with longer legs I digital games.

That said the new DRM issues are real and high level cryptography cracking is very hard to do.
