That recent VR tech demonstration blew me away...in a BAD way lol. Obviously the mainstreaming of the tech won't happen anytime soon so we can't dismiss its viability yet but I'm just not sold.

I think a huge issue the VR groupies don't think about is the visual disconnection of your environment.

Not in the "you can't tell whats real anymore!" way either. Lets say you want to drink or eat something while you use VR, you can't. You want to text someone or check your phone while in VR, you can't. You'll have to take the headset off, do your shit, and then put the headset back on.

That cements its usage as a neat toy rather than a new step with entertainment. Completely eliminating the ability to multitask will make using it for casual shit a drag. How many people are going to buy a toy that expensive with limited support compared to any other entertainment delivery method?

Augmented Reality seems like the more logical step than a huge visor that disconnects you completely from your own environment.

It's pretty damn bad. The DK2 foam had a slight benign odor to it, but the repeat nauseau/motion sickness the games inevitably cause make you associate the smell with nausea each time you pick it up. It's like when you get sick from an ordinary food and can't eat it anymore. I stopped using it for a few weeks until the foam smell went away, and then months passed and I just didn't feel like using it. You also have to do all sorts of fine lens and strap adjustments, for each person who puts it on, then load the person's digital eye profile.

DK2 was a decent rough start but it's too finicky. I constantly was adjusting the inner frame of the headset to be in contact with my eyes, otherwise it would go somewhat out of focus. One of the focus dials on my set would also not stay locked in. It was just heavy enough to notice after a while. A lot of little nagging things that add up and make you wonder why you're not just sitting back playing a game the old simple way.

The resolution is just nasty too. Your mind tricks you into trying to focus in on a distant object but then you remember it's just a few pixels on a screen that's an inch from your eyes. The mariginal bump to 2160×1200 is not enough. I doubt 1440p is even enough to match the equivalent 1080p from six feet away on a couch. 8K will be the standard that makes you forget a screen is on your face and 120-240fps will be crucial to stop all the negative press vomit stories. This shit is years away from being good and the PCs that will run it will be incredibly expensive beasts.

Yeah, I have the dk2 and it's a really impressive tech demo. I'm all in for Vive or Rift or whatever becomes the go-to PC VR in a couple of years, but I'll hold off until then.

Will get PS4 VR though since on a closed system with devs set to make VR-only content there should be some neat well-optimized stuff in the first year or two until PC VR really takes off.

Commercial AAA soft in VR is dumb right now. A dumbed down ugly version of an AAA game not made for VR is not really a compelling experience and VR headsets aren't really meant for hours long play sessions. All the best VR experiences right now are games made for VR that you play in short sessions. So whatever has the most "made for VR" software that's optimized to run at 90 or 120fps in the first few years is gonna be the winner.
