Yeah I remember when PD actually made the post about blasting Zelda music in his dorm... or the whole Aries thing during the whole Wii hype cycle. Will definitely miss your posts on there (even if I don't go in OT too much).

Joined in 2005 and had 1800~ posts by 2012... 3600 when I left in 2015. Doubling my post count in the last two years felt like I was spending too much time on GAF and all my bans came during that time too. No idea how some posters rack up like 20k in a year. I see the same two dozen posters in every Gaming and OT thread and sure enough they all joined in like the past year and have insane post counts.

I want to plug it into Assetto Corsa and grind on the Nurburgring and feel what I've felt in real life there in ways that are impossible on my 80" tv. I want more experiences like Edge of Nowhere.  The Rift captivates on a different level.

If you ever feel bad about the amount of posting you did on GAF, remember that there was a time when I was a top ten poster in terms of quantity of posts made on GAF. Even now I still probably haven't dipped below an account average of 30 posts a day despite going 30 days at a time without a post.

Here's the thing: I know the psvr came out at $699 but it's still cheaper than the oculus if you factor in the cost of a pc and the power it takes to run it.  And I would much rather support Sony than that intrusive Facebook and their obvious partnership with Microsoft. Also oculus requires a beefy pc which we already have one in the ps4. I truly feel you cannot buy a more powerful system if you factor in the exclusives. You cannot play Bloodborne or #driveclub on a pc. I've looked.

Also I can guarantee this thing will work with the next generation of hardware so you're ahead of the game and I can't say that about oculus. They might have a new product already waiting.

Those of you who predicted cheaper are just foolish. I mean this set of glasses has an external processor. It's like we are buying an extra computer.

Nobody with a lick of common sense does. Anyone with a lick of common sense has seen this song and dance before: New Technology that is supposed to be "revolutionary" costs $600+ to invest in. It either 1) flops hard and is forgotten quickly (Wii was cheap, but the gimmick got old quick and thereby after the meteoric rise, it crashed hard with the actual target base they had) or 2) struggles long enough to see itself become the semi-success it wished it was years ago (which is what I think VR will do if Occulus isn't shitcanned by Zuckerburg).

"B-B-BUT $1000 TV AND PHON--"

1) Phones and TV's are practically required in peoples lives now a days.
2) VR and other side-tech like that isn't.
3) You can get a TV or Phone for wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy less than the cost of Occulus + PC upgrading right now. Besides which:
4) Nobody is holding a gun to your head and telling you to buy that new shiny iPhone 7+S HD Remix Accent Core Phantasma EXTEND. Which goes into #3 really, but the point is: The tech is out there at various price levels that people that NEED something don't need to spend $1000 on it. Which is why I feel once people are able to get the first Occulus's specs in a mid-range PC, it'll do "well" enough to be successful.

But it definitely won't move the needle at this point in time. Hell, I'm dubious that VR is even needed for most people. Until they can get rid of the "screen door" effect, it's not something that I feel everyone needs to go out and try.

So what if VR flops, ill buy it and have a blast.

Also VR, unlike 3D, is something that is coming to the market because people want it, there is real interest in the tech.

There's only real interest because the tech now is "mature" enough to be at a reasonable price level. That's all. How many people are going to use VR in their day-to-day? That's where anyone that has seen this tech pony-show is dubious about it's "success." You'll buy the VR headset and use it for a month and then... what? Will you keep using it? :doge

Cost can go down, actually I would think the VR goggles probably share a lot of components with smartphones (fake edit: yep Oculus uses a phone screen). But no one's going to put on a huge set of goggles every time they want to play COD. And I think most people would be too distracted by the screen door effect to be willing to use it for games with great atmosphere and visuals which is exactly the type of game that would benefit from VR.

VR goggles are probably going to be supported for most games since it doesn't require a bunch of extra work by the developer but it'll be a few years before most people are satisfied with the resolution and price. Right now, it's a little bit like the 3D movies before Avatar.

That's an unrealistic standard to hold it up to. People have all kinds of tech/toys they don't use day to day. Massage chairs, hot tubs, Blu-Ray players, large stereo systems, mountain bikes, drones, e-readers, etc etc.

I don't think VR has to be as ubiquitous as the internet/PC or television for it to be deemed a success.

Yeah, VR is gonna be huge in the medical and military fields (already is in the latter). And also for 'virtual tourism' and for amusement park rides and stuff. I think gaming will probably be a minimal factor to VR's success.

I think gaming will help kickstart VR, but other applications will make it big.

One thing I'm interested in is VR for live sports events.  I know WWE is testing out VR for their shows.

I'm sure an electric car would be one of the most comfortable and easy to drive commuter vehicles which is all that matters for a lot of people (see: Prius sales). Add to that parents who want to buy their kids something that can't go too fast and is low maintenance (basically one moving part besides HVAC) and this could be a hit. :obama

Despite what car enthusiasts would like to think, few people consider anything besides comfort and reliability as their most important priority in a car.

VR's dead on arrival because they've tried to stretch out the hype for almost 4 years with developer kits, closed door demos, and journalist handjobs.

Oculus should have released DK1 as a consumer product.  There was so much genuine buzz.  Everything since early last year is manufactured hype.

That would have killed VR instantly. DK1 was the most vomit inducing piece of garbage tech ever. DK2 was a big improvement on that front. I imagine the final product will be even better on that front.

Affluenza changed Palmer, just as it did Notch and many more before them. He lost sight of actually swiftly creating a strong new market, and went all in on high-end nonsense all manufactured at peak bespoke prices in America. Only Apple gets to play that hand.

He's a bit of a reckless idiot as well, so its good to see him finally having to take a bow and own up to being responsible for the majority of yesterdays negativity. Not learning a single fucking thing from 35 years of consumer electronics is not a good look for a new company/format.

"Oh, did people react poorly to a $599 price at some time? I'm sure this'll be fine! DUH-DOY!"
