TL;DR: Fools soon parted with their money on a retro console that isn't really doing anything that a cheap Pentium 4 PC couldn't do for the consoles it's going to emulate.

So, business as usual.

Won't do it justice but basically some guy bought back the tools to mold the Jaguar shells (which were used to do medical devices or something) and ever since then has been fixated on making a fortune, or at the very least a meal ticket, off it. He is now convinced he can make a brand new console in a garage with other fifty years old dudes, that he'll get kickstarted a couple of millions for it, and that he could bring back giant expensive game cartridges back in fashion (because patches are the devil and all games released will be bug free thanks to their non-existent QA demanding it) and being distributed in stores. Such is the Power of Friendship Nostalgia.

What the console is doesn't really matter, Mike Kennedy (the guy behind it... Imagine the Gremlin's dad except more from Cali and sleazier) has zero technical expertise and his machine has been announced successively as a retro machine capable of emulating everything from 2600 to SNES, then as a brand new console playing only new "retro styled" games and now as a new Colecovision thing. The price point fluctuated between 350 and 150$ depending on what month we were in. With no real hardware spec (apart from "it must have a Jaguar shell") there's of course very few games sure to be released on it but it hasn't stopped Mike claiming he was in negociations with Sega, Konami and al... because he called their receptionist or something.

They already tried to crowdfund it a few months ago but at the last minute went through Indiegogo instead of Kickstarter, apparently because they didn't know until the last few days that they needed a working prototype (which they don't have, since they don't even know what their machine is... Had a ton of CG renders of the plastic cases in all colours tho) to be on KS. When the Indiegogo went down in flames, they lashed out on everyone calling them out (like branding drunks a couple of retro podcasters being underwhelmed by their pitch : classy !) then ultimately accepted defeat, ate crow, apologized and promised to only come back when they know what they will be doing...

...Obviously not sincere, since they are back with yet another rebranded fake prototype, Jaguar shelled piece of shit to submit on KS.

There's a thread on AtariAge with all the drama, but it's long as hell. Neogaf has a couple good digest ones.

Yes, the thing is a complete scam. But my point is, retro console people are a bit weird (sorry, tiesto) in their collecting and wanting a newer machine that will allow them to do the same thing a PC has been able to do for nearly twenty years now.

Unless these retro consoles are basically emulating the Saturn or X-box, I don't get why people want these things. They're a waste of cash. They aren't the original hardware (in general), but newer hardware doing the same thing an emulator does in a way.

It wasn't just an emulator console though. The idea is to have a modern console that plays NEW cartridge based games made for it, on top of being able to emulate some older consoles, which I'm sure is a super niche market SOME people are interested in.

Prob is that their ideas are shady as hell (no patches ever because online is the devil, the games will be perfect forever), they already have one shady as hell failed kickstater, using cartridges died out for a reason, and their "adaptable" console prototpe is apparently a glorified SNES mini in a jaguar shell. Such a good product to invest in.

I'm actually not too big on the retro aftermarket consoles (much preferring original hardware and games, though if it's not feasible for whatever reason I'll play a game on a PC emulator). An all-new console that played retro-styled games on cartridges would be a pretty neat idea but they'd have to go all the way with it, maybe use an older chipset (i.e. Motorola 68000) and the hardware restrictions that come with that. An ARM running Android OS in a shiny new (or old, as in this case) shell ain't too appealing. There's enough of those things to go around already.

Though I could see the appeal at least for something like the Retron 5 - you can play your original cartridges so in a way it's a lot less legally questionable than downloading ROMs, it combines many systems in one so you can free up TV inputs, it has HDMI output and a wireless control... an easy and cheap 'out of the box' way for people to get into retro gaming and don't want to track down original hardware or tinker with emulator settings.

It's not a coincidence that the two rap albums to ever win the AOTY Grammy were very pop and r&b influenced (Speakerboxx/Love Below and the Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill). Lots of melody and radio hits on those albums. TPAB doesn't have much of either.

I didn't really want this job. I loved my old one working at a small business and working with video games. I didn't actively search it. My mom hooked me up and kinda made me do it because if I said no then I never would've heard the end of it. But now I'm really not hearing the end of it from her because she keeps calling me, telling me that I fucked up my future, yelling at me over the phone, saying "how hard she worked" to get me this job, etc..
