It bothered me in Mass Effect when suddenly Shepard's sexual options were expanded by making some characters bisexual, or allowing inter-species relations despite previously hinting at that being possibly poisonous to some of them. Nevermind the fact that their genitals might not match in any way whatsoever. That was the epitome of lazy pandering.

However, calling Link an "established character" is a stretch. He's a cardboard cutout of the generic chosen hero. A mute nobody obviously named to be a cipher for the player. His defining characterisitc across all games is that he is the courage part of the Triforce.

Little kids are soft like marshmallows. Would the kid have even managed to get out a horrific scream? What do you think its face looked like?

Probably not before being dragged under. Gators can be fast in the water and outside of the father trying to fight the gator to get his kid, the kid probably would've been gone in seconds. Now for being "killed instantly" that's a toss-up. I'd say drowned, but if there was no flailing (due to shock) it'd probably already be over.
